Building Expertise vs Becoming Interesting
Recently I've been striving to build skills related to my profession. I've noticed I tap out around 3-4 hours of hard focus. It got me thinking that I'm not capable of doing more than one thing well at a time. I understand the concept of campaigns, but I'm having trouble deciding which area to follow, work or game? It's weird because when I game, I'm a lot more productive but it still takes up a good amount of time, energy, and thought. I want to be great at both but feel like (personally) the choice is a binary one. Have you guys had similar experiences?

I'm not following why it's a binary choice for you?

Vague post and it's hard to give specific advice because we don't know shit about you.

Essentially what you're asking is how much time to spend on work vs. game. How do we know? There's way too many variables to judge.

Maybe day game is not meant for your lifestyle? Maybe you hate drinking? There are no one size fits all solutions.

Like everything in life....try something new. See what results are produced. Tweak your system, then try again, and record results. Keep a journal to track progress.

Do all of this, then report back.

edit: I had a good post about monk mode:

Great.

There are 168 hours in a week. Figure out how you use them, and maximize your time.

First on your agenda should be to learn how to communicate ideas in writing better. I had to read your post 2.5 times before I understood what you were trying to say.

Honestly, you'll get really good at game over the course of a year or so if you just practice 10 hours a week. 1 hour daygame either at lunch or after work during the weekdays and two other venues for game during the course of the week.

It may well involve sacrifices but it is well within the realm of possibility for even those who are working crazy 80 hour weeks.

Indeed, stop looking at it as either/or. Work on both. Keep working, keep reading, keep working out. Bada bing.
