Search function will get you where you want. But prepare your pocket, Rio is among the most expensive places to stay.

Hotels in Rio are expensive and generally a terrible value overall considering the conditions of most hotels. I highly recommend going on AirBnB and getting an apartment in Ipanena/Leblon. You should be able to find something decent for less than $100 per night.

Best of luck in Rio. It has become on of my personal poosy paradises.

With the devaluation of the Real, you can probably find a studio or 1 BD in Ipanema / Leblon for less than R$3,000 per month. For example:

And this is on Craigslist-- much better deals can be had on the ground in Rio with a bit of hustle. You could even find a room in Zona Sul for $500-750USD, although the lower end of the price range will put you in Copacabana. Bottom line is that Rio is no longer as expensive as it once was when the Real strengthened to around 1.5 per dollar. The US dollar gains against the Real are outpacing inflation, and I don't see the Brazilian economy making a strong recovery anytime soon. IMO this is more of a correction back to where the Real should be rather than depreciation.

I just prefer to stay in Ipanema or Leblon. It's clean, safe at all hours of the day/night and has fewer tourists. IMO Copacabana is the most dangerous place to stay in Rio in terms of likelihood of getting mugged. Thieves know that most tourists stay there and target it as such.

There has been plenty written on the forum on nightlife in Rio, including which venues to go to on which days. However if you're coming to Rio for the nightlife, then you will be really disappointed. Rio has disproportionately bad nightlife for a city of its size. It's much better to spit game to that fly Carioca during the day or on the beach and not rely on night game as much. If you at least make an attempt to speak halfway decent Portuguese and don't dress like a slob, you'll be surpassed at how open and friendly they are.

It would be very hard. I was banging a girl in Rio who lived with another roomate in an apartrment the size of a closet. They slept on bunkbeds. They paid 1200 a month and had a 1 year lease. And they lived beside a sewage facility.

Real estate is out of control in Rio.

Dcboss mentions and links to apartments for around US$1000 a month while Linux is talking about renting a bunkbed next to a sewage facility for US$200 more than that. Where does the discrepancy come from?

She lived in Ipanema around post 5 or 6 where cococabana and ipenama meet. You could probably find something cheap in Cococabana if you want to stay there but have fun getting robbed and everyone asking to if you want to buy drugs. Your best bet is to save up and stay in Leblon around post 11.

The apartment that I linked to is in Leblon (and furnished), and you can certainly find a better deal if you walk around the neighborhood and have a Brazilian friend call on any "Para Alugar " signs. $1,000 USD will certainly get you an apartment in Zona Sul south of Copacabana. It won't be a luxury building with amenities and a balcony facing the beach, but it will be a very clean and relatively modern studio or one bedroom.

In regards to the discrepancy, it depends on when LINUX was last in Rio. Just a year ago, the Real was around 2.1 per dollar. So what costs $1,200 one year ago is now around 50% less, or $600 in relative terms. I'll be returning to Rio in May to get some more intel and look for more long-term living arrangements, but I think it's now a relative bargain. Outside of real estate (and electronics, clothes, etc.), you can live in Rio relatively cheap and be surrounded by sexy, feminine girls, beautiful beaches and one of the best cultures in the world. And it may get even cheaper. Many economists are predicting that 4 BRL per dollar is closer than 3 BRL at this point.

I feel like I just stepped into bizarro world or something, I think I may disagree with 95% of what has been stated in this thread.

I have not been to Rio recently, so I can't help out with what the current market actually bears or not.

However, in my opinion Leblon is one of the worst places to stay in Rio. If I was to live there permanently, perhaps, but as someone looking to get their feet wet in Rio, it's horrible. Why? For one, everything is twice the price there (not just accommodation but also cost of living wise). Secondly, it's on the far end of Zona Sul so you have to go across Ipanema, Copa, Botafogo, Flamengo, then through Catete to get downtown if you want to go there. It's so far away from the center/rest of Zona Sul that the metro doesn't even go there yet. Logistically, Leblon is complete rubbish.

Where Ipanema and Copa meet is a good spot. If you are looking for cheaper rent, look to neighbourhoods like Botafogo, Flamengo, and Leme. I honestly think Botafogo and Flamengo may be two of the best neighbourhoods logistically in Rio. They are smack dab in the middle with decent access to both Centro and Zona Sul regions. They are a bit more dangerous, but as long as you use general precautions you should be fine.

Lesser known places like Laranjeiras, Urca, and Humaitá are also excellent options.

This is completely incorrect. There are countless neighbourhoods in Rio that are much more dangerous than Copacabana.

Yes, targeting is rampant in Copa, but there is also a much higher degree of stupidity by gringos that occurs in Copa than other areas.

I disagree. Nightlife in Rio is actually quite excellent for Latin America. For one, street night life is among the best in the entire region.

The problem with Rio isn't the amount or diversity of nightlife, it's the logistics of it. Besides Lapa, there isn't really much of a concentration of nightlife areas in the city. This means that nightlife is extremely spread out and there are venues throughout the city such as in Lagoa, Tijuca, Botafogo, Centro, and Ipanema, ect.

Therefore if you don't know where to go and where the current hot spots are, it may seem like nightlife isn't good but that doesn't mean it's bad.

Rio is probably the most casual dressed cosmopolitan city I have ever been to. You do not need to dress nicely to pick up in Rio, and in fact, doing so might make you a bigger target for robbery.

I don't know Americas, i thought Leblon was awesome. The three neighborhoods in questions are Ipanema, Leblon, or Copoabana. Of course certain neighborhoods are more dangerous, like the favelas.

You had a different experience than most of us. I partied my ass off in leblon at the clubs and at the beach. The cab ride to Bar Bukowski in Butofogo or Lapa wasn't that much more than if I stayed in Copocabona. There's also a 24 hour pizza joint in Leblon where i hooked up with chicks on a regular basis.

I don't know. I stick beside what I said, stay in Leblon. Avoid Copocabana.

i rented a small studio in flamengo for $1500 a month a few years ago, the real was like 1.6 to 1 dollar.

I think staying leblon or ipanema is good for a short trip and staying in flamengo, botafogo, laranjeiras, catete etc is good for a longer stay where you want a more local life.

i think leme is ok.

I never had an issue with the doormen of apartments in rio. They will likely be half asleep anyway if you bring a girl back late.
