I did go for some days back in 2013.
Since then I've heard it has become easier to get a visa (e-visa).
Its a great place with alot to see and do. My best tip is not to rush it.
Travelling back then ( i heard changes are coming fast) took time, due to bad roads. But buses are rather good and improving.
Yangon is heaven for collectors of old coins, books, medalions , bills...etc. , its a great place to wander around and "get lost".
Have a beer or two at one of the many bars with a local , he might tell you something interesting.
Shwedagon Pagoda is a must here, and the much smaller Sule Pagoda downtown with some old beautiful british arcitecthure around.
The Saint Mary Cathedral in Yangon (largest in Burma) is nice and worth checking out.

As for Bagan; this has to be one of my favourite places , truly awe inspiring. really awesome. Get a bike and go around.The place is immense. Many of the pagodas and temples are open and inside full of beautiful paintings. There is a hefty commison to enter the biggest one.
Go for sunset or sunrise on top of any of the bigger ones.
My biggest regret was not spending more time in Burma, I was in such a hurry to get to Jakarta and Indonesia.

Back then it was kinda hard getting a room for a reasonable price. Demand was much higher than supply. I remember booking weeks a head just to be sure.
I guess it has changed now, but just in case you should check it out, or at least get a room for the first night.
If you like i can give the names of places i stayed at.

a little tip; bring fucking sun lotion. hard to come by (and only unknown shit brands) and expensive as fuck.
The food is great and fruits are delicious. there was no mc d or coca cola.
Place is dirt cheap, with guesthouse/hotels being by far your biggest cost.
I felt safe while there, the people are friendly and helpful. But watch out for the guys wanting to change money with you on the streets. Might seem like a good deal...but dont. They WILL fool you.

Update:

Arrived in Yangon after about a 1 hour flight from Bangkok. It's amazing how underdeveloped the country compared to it's neighbor. Much more traditional.

Got a cab from the airport and sat in silence on the way to the hotel. I offered the driver a Ricola and he started speaking English. I didn't bother speaking with him because I didn't think he spoke English but his was pretty damn good. He gave me a bit of history regarding the country.

I have actually found that more random Burmese speak English than Thais. Of course, this is attributed to being a former English colony. Absolutely stunning pagodas and temples and the Burmese are very friendly and curious.

Burmese girls are very conservative and are very intriguing. I wouldn't say they are hot but I do find their modesty and simplicity very attractive. They seem to have a lot of humility. Hopefully the rapid development that is occuring throughout the country won't spoil it.

Anyways, I'll get to the girls because someone asked about a Tinder update. Like I said in a previous post, I didn't come with any intention to hook up on this trip but I did get on Tinder and the activity is very low. A few swipes then "no one is around you." A few hours later a few more and so on. I got a match and ended up meeting with a girl and her 2 friends. They are all teachers at an international school here in Yangon. The girl I matched with is originally from Singapore and the 2 friends were from New Zealand and the US. New Zealand and US were married and not attractive.

Singapore girl was not very attractive but would be fuckable if I was drinking. She was a solid 5.5. If she lost about 15 pounds and got braces she would definitely be a 7.5.

We met at a bar called 7th Spot in downtown and were only there for a few minutes before going to another swanky type expat bar. They don't date the Burmese guys and most of the other expats are married. It's a very tight knit expat community being as there are not a lot of them. Most of the expats work in NGOs and the United Nations. She went on a bit of a rant about how much the NGO and UN guys make and how they get all these benefits, can't say I blame her. "Non-profit" is actually very profitable.

Anyways, we ended up going to another place called Mojo which is a nice. We made out outside and I could have banged her that night but honestly, now that I have started applying game I don't even like to sleep with girls unless I find them very attractive so I said I had to go because I needed to get up the next morning for a tour. She said she wanted to see me again and we exchanged numbers and I left.

To sum it up:

Expat girls are hungry for D
Not a lot of Tinder activity
The expat community is tight knit and welcoming to outsiders as there are not many and everyone is pretty friendly.
If you have even an iota of game you can pull some expat ass.

I don't have any knowledge yet of Burmese girls although there were a few at Mojo that seemed pretty hot and smiled at me.

You'll generally find that outside of your mega cities in Asia, that the expatriate female population is starved for men. There just aren't many viable options for Western girls living in Asia.

I've banged enough expats now where I live, and considering the expat population is rather small, it almost feels like High School with the frequency I run into former bangs.

This info is outdated. I was in Burma last August, and atms are easily found in airports, cities, and tourist spots. I even noticed one on a small pagoda island in Inle Lake, so no need to rely solely on cash. I can confirm that a schwab atm card works and charges no withdrawal fees in Burma (or anywhere on Earth).

I can also comment on the relative ease of the expat community. Not a large group, but tight knit. You can find them at shangri la hotel (formerly Traders) happy hour, 19th street during the evening or the strand hotel fancy happy hour, which is once a week. A friend of mine is living in the city, so I already had an in, but it would be easy to make your way into a group or chat up any of the expats at one of the happy hours, which you could then transition into getting into their social circle. I went to some private parties with expats which were well worth it, hosted at embassies and such. Not upscale at all though, this is still Myanmar after all. Union bar on the Strand gets popping at night as well, live DJ sets with a mixed scene of expats and high class Burmese. Fashion shows are p4p which I'm not into but are entertaining, with the fashion show area turning into a dance floor between shows. It's a sausage fest though obviously so bring your own women if you go.

The expat scene is concentrated almost entirely in Yangon, which is light years ahead of anywhere else in Burma, save perhaps for the recently built capital which I didn't visit-regular internet, electricity, sidewalks, paved roads, etc. Mandalay, the second biggest city, is full of unpaved streets that get either flooded or dusty depending on the season, and has only one actual supermarket. The rest of the country is even less developed but quickly gaining ground.

I wouldn't recommend Burma purely for game purposes, but its a great experience, a beautiful country, with pretty good food and friendly, English speaking people. The society is quite conservative, though I did notice quite a few iois from women there, especially outside of Yangon. Even men often wanted to chat me up, say hello, and take photos with their new smartphones. Very coo, place that I'd like to get back to someday, hopefully before it turns into a commercialized society.

The post regarding the crisp, clean, and unbent US Dollars doesn't apply anymore. It did several years ago and you could only exchange high denomination bills, 100s. There are now multiple ATMs throughout the major cities and tourist areas (the only areas that you would care to go to).

I got cash easily. Don't worry about bringing actual dollars. In fact, you get crappy exchange rates at the money changer places. Use ATMS.

Update 2:

Arrived in Bagan yesterday morning. Took the night bus from Yangon which was about a 10 hour trip. The whole time I was wishing I would have ponied up for the expensive ass domestic flight as the ride was bumpy which made it difficult to read or sleep.

The cab picked me up from the bus station at about 5:30AM and took me to a temple to watch the sunrise with all of the other temples and pagodas in sight. Truly breathtaking.

Arrived at the hostel but was unable to check in. There was a cute Italian/Russian girl that works at the hostel I am staying at. We talked for a second and caught a coy smile from her and I thanked her and touched her arm in an ambiguous way that was more friendly than flirty. However, this was a big no no as she had apparently told one of the guys that works at the hostel that I toucher her arm. He took me aside and told me that she is under 18 (NEVER would have guessed) and that she actually grew up here in Bagan which meant she was raised with the strict Buddhist cultural norms of NO female touching. I never thought of Buddhism as being a very strict religion but it appears in Myanmar that in some respects, it can be considered as strict as Islam.

Anyways, I got some work done and eventually checked into my room after several hours. I showered and walked downstairs and saw a fuckable girl sitting by herself at a table. I approached and we began talking. She said she was from Reno. She said that she came to Bagan with a guy that she met in Vietnam but that there was nothing going on between them but that she had some emotional connection with him. Update 3:

Arrived in Mandalay yesterday morning. I took a flight from the airport in Bagan. Ticket price was about $70 US.

About Mandalay, hands down the most boring medium-large sized city I have ever stepped foot. The city is ugly. Granted there are a few interesting locations such as the palace in the center and the temple atop Mandalay Hill. However, if you have seen one temple/pagoda/palace in Myanmar you have seen them all (except Shwedagon Pagoda which is truly remarkable and is one of a kind).

I was not expecting this city to be like Bangkok but assumed that all of the advice I heard on Mandalay not having any nightlife were overstated. Wrong. This city has ZERO nightlife. I scoured the city last night asking about nightlife and was routinely told that there is nothing. However, I did find a cab driver that took me to a karaoke place. I went in and was put into a private room with about 10 butlers catering to me which was actually obnoxious and became annoying. No one spoke English and was brought a cute Burmese chick.

This was uncomfortable as she spoke no English whatsoever and just sat there trying to pick out crappy English songs to sing. I ordered her a beer and ended up leaving. The girls at this place weren't even freelancers and don't fuck the guys.

Myanmar summary:

Yangon:
Some nightlife confined to a small group of expatriates which is actually decent.
Expat chicks are thirsty for cock.
Has potential to become a great city with decent nightlife.

Bagan:
Beautiful temples and pagodas.
Very rural
Most, if not all good looking girls are with their boyfriends/husbands
There were some good looking girls that were in groups of 2 that were decent
Work hostel game and escalate quickly

Girls are nice as they are not on the defense and are definitely playing a spiritual type role a la Eat, Pray, Love. They all look the same with their baggy damsel pants with tribal design patterns.

Mandalay:
Don't bother. Stay away.

Myanmar as a whole:
This country is extremely resource rich. During the British colonial era, it was the wealthiest country in southeast Asia if not all of Asia. 50 years of government rule have led to gross underdevelopment. I would bet that it will eventually surpass Thailand and Vietnam in terms of development and wealth in about 20 years' time and, as a consequence, decent nightlife.

Burmese girls are SUPER conservative and not all that attractive physically but are humble and nice.

Here's my litmus test. Would I ever come back? Nope.

I've just spent a week in Burma, four nights in Mandalay and three in Bagan.

Some information in this thread is old. A sim-card with data is 4500Kyat at the airport. ATMs are also available but I would bring some cash anyway since only one out of three ATMs in Mandalay airport is working.

I had a girl I met over a year ago show me around. I met her in route66 Bangkok, she was dancing on the dancefloor and I could see she was having fun. So I danced with her. Tried to speak with her in Thai but she couldn't understand. I thought it was because of the music. So I added her in LINE and we've been keeping in contact.

I knew she had some money because not every girl in Burma gets the opportunity to go to Bangkok. But I was surprised when she showed up in a nice car. The took me around Mandalay to see all the temples, the mall, local market and the U-Bein bridge. Now this girl is a virgin, I know this, because when I met her in route66 I gave her a kiss on the cheek. She later told be that I was the first guy to do this.

Tinder activity is extremely low. There was two girls using it in Mandalay. One of them not online since four days. The other one I matched with. She was a bit interesting. The night life sucks. I also went to one of the fashion shows, "Perfect" on the forth floor in diamond plaza(Mandalay). Its a big room with a big stage. Six girls would be on it walking around it in different patterns. After a while it would change and six new girls would enter the stage. They are dressed pretty much like a normal girl would dress in Bangkok. I don't know if it was possible to take them out, but I didn't see any guys leaving with girls and neither did I see any of the girls speaking with the guys.

I feel a bit sad for the Burmese guys, but still, if they get married at least they will have a girl who committees and probably won't cheat.

I disagree the Burmese girls are "fucking ugly". There is many cute girls around. But they are not sexy wearing those traditional cloths and their energy isn't really attractive either.

I didn't see Yanong nor Inle lake and I will probably never go either. Honestly I can't wait to go back to Bangkok tomorrow.

I've spent around $20/day for hotel in Mandalay and hostel in Bagan. About 4500THB for the flight. And about 225.000 of the local currency for daily expenses.

I wouldn't go anywhere but Yangon if your goal is to bang a local, and even then it's gonna be an uphill battle. At least in Yangon you have a middle-upper class and an adventurous expat community. There are plenty of tourists elsewhere on the beaten Bagan/Inle/Mandalay path but not many single women, plus if you're going for backpacker chicks you're better off in Thailand anyway

Totally agree with you on this! Burmese food is great and underappreciated. It also tends to be much less spicy than Thai or Indian food!

I love their Tofu salad (Burmese tofu is made with chickpea flour, not soy) and the fermented tea leaves salad. All the light soups I find good as well.

What's cool about Burma is all the different ethnic groups having preserved their food and traditions. The Shan people who lives in the Kengtung region for example are actually mostly Thais and it's reflected by the way they eat: laap meat, sticky rice, fermented soy bean paste and all the fresh herbs like thai basil, vietnamese coriander etc.

Interesting factoid: Khao Soi which has become so popular is actually a Burmese dish.

I visited Burma with my parents a long time ago and have kept good memories from the country. It's definitely a good option for the adventure looking/culturally-minded fellow travelers of the forum.

No billiard as far as I know. Best way to meet a Burmese girl would probable be during the day but I wouldn't go around approaching girls randomly. I saw two different wedding photo shoots and the couples were in their late twenties or early thirties if I would guess.

I think the biggest part of those 65million lives in bamboo houses in the countryside. Farming and taking care of the animals. Schools are separated between girls and boys during the teens so they shouldn't flirt with each other.

I take my earlier statement back.Burmese girls are actually quite ugly compared to Bangkok girls.

I'm going to Myanmar at the end of the month. I'll be there for one week. I want to see the country and the sites, if I can get the flag, great, if not, that's np. I was thinking about staying in Yangon for like 3 days and then go to Bagan or Mandalay, from reading previous posts everyone seem to prefer Bagan. Would the bus or train ride from Yangon be too bad or just better to fly over? I have a problem with my CC and can't book online. Any help will be very appreciated.

Try booking.com, i think they may do "pay on site bookings". I stayed in the best western Chinatown and it was really nice, there is a mediocre street that sells all kinds of grilled kebobs. Don't plan on any nice nightlife or a place that isn't a shithole. I did not have any luck with women no find any I wanted to have luck with, the Schwedagon Pagoda was cool but the rest of the city is shit. I would say it's probably the worst country I've ever been to and I just went because I wanted to see every country in SEA. I think 3 days is too much.

I found most of Asia has a very low activity on dating apps. Greater Tokyo is 39 million people (you know more people than the whole of Australia and Canada) and yet I was able to swipe through all the women on Tinder fairly easily and ran out of people to swipe on. Then when I went to Fukuoka (1.6 million) I only saw like under 12 women on Tinder.

Or even in the Republic of Georgia where I tried Tinder in both Tbilisi and Batumi and both places seem to have under 50 women for me to swipe on.

I don't think anywhere in Asia comes close to the U.S. or Britain for online dating. I remember reading one article where a guy swiped on 210,000 women in San Francisco. Even if you're a real life Shrek and only get a 0.1% match rate that's still 210 matches and maybe 10% - 30% of those could convert into something.

I was in Myanmar 2 years ago for a couple of weeks. I love its traditional culture and colonial history but even in 2016 it was changing rapidly - smartphones everywhere (even the poor marketplaces), more and more consumerist culture. Myanmar is famous for its buddhist retreats - I recommend you go if you have the time.

I didn't focus too much on game until I got to the capital. Spent a total of 3 nights in Yangon.

First night I wandered into town and befriended a motley crew of fellow travellers. We hopped the main bar street (which was tiny) before catching a taxi to various clubs around town... the dance floor was hilariously tame (we were easily the life of the party). Took a cute dutch girl out from under the nose of this very smooth French guy (sorry if you're on here bud) and back to her hotel but got CB'd by the doorman.

The final two nights I dialled up tinder. Closed an american ex-pat at her shoebox little apartment. We had sex then stayed up watching Curb, cool girl. The next night I closed an English-speaking local Myanmar girl working in IT/social media marketing - we're still friendly on social media. She was a 7 face with a fantastic body. She took me to some alternative reggae bar where a lot of ex-pats were hanging, and we also tried to jump on a ferry to cross the river but missed the last boat. I took her back to mine (I had literally just closed the door to my room and pushed her on the bed when reception called to remind me they would be charging me an extra person... fine, whatever, stop ruining the vibe mate!)

I think tinder is your best bet for locals - it filters girls who are "westernised" including english language. I seemed to get a lot of matches from girls who were just curious. From my brief experience, I suspect girls here are starved for guys with game, like a lot of other places in Asia.

The American took me to this hotel that had a very fancy cigar-room style colonial whiskey bar – great spot for a D2 if I ever went back. PM me if you want details on venues, although I'm sure a lot has changed in 2 years.
