RE: Question about lifting and boxing
well this has become the unofficial boxing thread. my trainer reccomends dance classes to work on footwork, balance, etc. any experienced boxers wanna weigh in on that?

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
You're probably much better off using that time for more boxing than you are dance classes.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I tried lifting and boxing (sparring and bag work) 5 days a week and I couldn't muster it. far too taxing on my shoulders. I do boxing twice a week and lift 4-5 and I'm doing alright. To each their own though.

I've seen a very knowledgeable poster on the sherdog stand up forum, that trained under Mike McCallum, recommend Salsa dancing, and he said he learned new ways to move / shift weight etc. He's up at the pro level though, and I'd agree with RioNomad that if you're still learning the sport, it would be better to use your time to focus on boxing. It wouldn't hurt to take a class a week though I'm sure.

Dancing is good for footwork, balance, coordination, timing, proprioception, etc.

If you struggle in these areas, dancing would likely help a little bit.

Most great boxers are good dancers.

It's about being light on your feet and being able to move gracefully in all directions .

Gio just out of curiosity, do you have any formal boxing or martial arts training?

Yes, a few years of "formal" judo training and a few years of formal boxing. My judo master and boxing coach were both great guys and great coaches. I got my amateur boxing license and fought a few amateur bouts.

What's weird is that I'm the best dancer in the club, but always had horrible footwork when sparring or fighting competitively (Karate. Although I know boxing, I never boxed professionally or even in amateurs). I lost at tournaments before where I was beating the hell out of the other guy because of point deductions from leaving the ring, caused by backtracking, caused by bad footwork.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
^ I remember reading a post from Ross at rossboxing about how when he would have fighters cross train in other things for variety, he'd often find that while their footwork etc. was amazing with regards to boxing, their co-ordination was atrocious when attempting other sports / activities. Shows what hard work can do as these were world class fighters.

On the other hand I've seen young kids that are so fast, co-ordinated and athletic, with the balance of a cat, that take to boxing so quickly that it used to make me want to quit and just slit my wrists (and I'd consider myself to be pretty well co-ordinated and reasonably talented).

How old are you ? It is easier to learn how to box while being young, don't discourage yourself.

One thing that helps a lot is shadowboxing and running. Shadowboxing will help to coordinate your move and running will give you stamina. I can't insist enough on the importance of legs in a boxing bout.

I'm 30, been boxing around 20 years so I'm pretty decent. I was just trying to express how talented some kids actually are.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Doesn't skipping help with the footwork in boxing?

On another note:

I just started a boxing session today after first doing a chest at my gym. I had to quit during the stretching cos I had a dizzy spell..I think it's due to me not eating properly this morning and maybe the gym was very stuffy..

I will return on Monday for another try..it's time to flatten this belly!

Jump rope is good for footwork.

The problem with boxing though is that you have to do everything....there are no shortcuts.

Jump rope is good for coordination and especially muscular endurance for the calves to stay on your toes...but you still have to do your shadow boxing, work movement when you're on the bag, have a good trainer work on your movement doing padwork, and then finally incorporate it into sparring.

The first couple times I sparred I got done and wondered why I'd stood there flat footed the whole time, despite having slick footwork when I was standing watching myself shadowbox in a mirror.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Well I have decided to get into boxing as one of my goals for 2015 and this thread has become the de facto boxing thread. I went to gym last night and used the old gloves they had for my first time. I do want to make a commitment to boxing so I was thinking of buying a pair of gloves. I have seen a few links throughout this thread but none of them are really recommendations for gloves to use (with the exception of MikeCF's link which is now broken).

So what does RVF recommend as a great pair of gloves to get for a beginner?

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
I have found virtually no difference (for the beginner or casual user) between the pairs I import for $10 to ones from suppliers priced at $50+.

Just make sure they are the right weight and see if you get into it before shelling out on expensive equipment.

(nobody looks more foolish at a boxing gym than the newb with the fresh out of the packet Reyes gloves Big Grin ).

I got mine from Dicks Sporting Goods.

Do you guys recommend 12oz, 14oz, or 16oz for my first pair of bag gloves?

I've generally heard 16oz gloves are the way to go. I just wanted to confirm with you guys who have been doing this longer than I have.

No, that's not true at all. Why would you say that?

I like 12oz bag gloves and 14-16oz sparring gloves, depending on your size. Ask your coach what size sparring gloves he wants you to wear.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
16 oz gloves for sparring always; unless you're 5'2 and weigh 110 lb's. i've sparred in a lot of boxing gyms and i've never once seen anyone spar in anything less than 16's. the pro's at my gym sometimes even use 18's and 20's when they're just fucking around and don't have a fight coming up.

if you're a beginner you're bound to make mistakes throwing shots at the heavy bag which leaves you more prone to injury. those 12 oz bag gloves offer nothing for protection. i actually don't even know why companies even make them anymore as i've never seen any recent respected fighter wear them (they wore em a lot in the old days when no one really knew any better).

save the gloves less than 16 oz's for competitive bouts.

RE: Question about lifting and boxing
Manny trains in 10oz bag gloves. Tons of pros train in gloves less than 16oz.

You're talking out of your ass by making so many absolute statements like "16oz always", " i actually don't even know why companies even make them anymore as i've never seen any recent respected fighter wear them" and "Title platinum gloves are the best to use as a beginner".

There's more than one way to skin a cat.
