What will our money be worth in 40-50 years?
Given trends in western economies (cutting pensions, massive debts, inflation, static wages, etc.) plus the looming crippling energy crises in the coming decades, all coupled with climate change, what will our money (which is fiat currency based on hallucinated wealth) be worth?

Inflation Calculator

Just take a dollar back in 1965 and see what its worth today, there's your answer.

RE: What will our money be worth in 40-50 years?
1 dollar will most likely be able to purchase less but the overall savings/assets that is held will remain he same.

Unless you put it under a mattress that is. CD's, stock market, Bonds historically keeps after tax value ahead of inflation.

Btw the value will probably change less in the next 20-30 years than it did the last 30 yrs(read some report saying that as well). They are predicting 2 decades of 2 % inflation. As it is , they aren't meeting that.

Of course the CPI is leaving out food and energy but that is a whole different story.

Some of your list (pensions, wages) being cut or stagnating actually will have opposite effect. Fewer dollars chasing the same amount of goods means deflation. We are and have been in danger of that for the last few years because less people are spending or have money.

Certain things like home prices, as well as the stock market are being artificially propped up to keep/increase value. Without doing it we probably have deflation. One of the reasons they are hesitant to raise rates.

Within 3 years your money will be worthless, that is putting it mildly.

The geo-political issues going on now are going to lead to something ugly.

+1

Historically, only land and precious metals (gold, silver) were worthy

If I had any money to invest I'd probably invest in arable land in Latin America

Latin America will be a great place to buy land. The Bush family bought a huge ranch in Paraguay a few years back, that tells you everything you need to know.

China is talking about bringing back a gold standard, if this happens then the dollar will sink.

Many are talking about fireworks happening by mid year of 2015, I have been told this by a former JP Morgan executive.

I've been buying silver and gold since 2010. Not as an investment but as a hedge against inflation.

I buy Silver, trying to make one last push to buy a few more before the axe comes down.

The currency will either be devalued or crash completely.

Land in Latin America has a history of changing hands due to violence or government dictate.

So maybe not the safest of all investments.

This is the issue with using fiat money.
Ultimately no accountability for the true value of a piece of paper printed by a central banking authority "independent" of the government.

Highly unlikely. And if you're right, gold and silver won't save you. Clean water, arable land, and guns will.

The USD is rising in value relative to other currencies. Currency is all about belief and trust, and people still believe and trust in the power of the American empire.

Whether that's still true in 40 to 50 years, no one knows. It'll probably still be true in three years though.

Yea a lot of people are trying to hide their money from the "Evil American Empire" and many of these people are going to be flat out robbed in Latin America.

And that statement is coming from a guy who is also worried about where America is heading and has zero faith in the government.

All fiat money eventually gets discredited. BUT-- your own mortality is more important to worry about.

The person above who bet our money will be worthless in three years, I'll give you 1.5- 1 odds on that if there's a way to legally wager with someone holding the money and "worthless" meaning not accepted.

Any takers? Hello?

It's easy and quick attention-getting to say the sky is falling.

It took hundreds of years for the Roman empire's currency to get diluted. Guess what, you won't be around probably more than about 50-60 and it happened gradually.

Actually that doesn't benefit china much. China only wants to do that so the dollar doesn't get more diluted since they own so much of dollars.

USA (which owns 20% of IMF gold) has 8 times the gold of china. We HAVE LESS THAN A 1/4 THE POPULATION. That means on a per capita level we have 32x more gold per person.

That means every American is 32x richer than a Chinese person. In other words our relative wealth per person would be more in that scenario than it is now compared to China. Don't agree? NUMBERS DON'T LIE! But China would benefit by having the dollars it already owns from being more diluted.

I think they are just meaning A dollar buys less. Obviously as long as USA exists our cash is legal tender here. It isn't like one can spend gold everywhere. They are also not old enough to realize that as a dollar is worth less , banks have to increase interest rates.

In the early 1980's inflation was 13% 1 year. My father got a 5 yr cd paying 20%. Who do you think won out on that deal? He destroyed inflation.

That's assuming the official numbers are accurate. US gold reserves have not been independently audited in a long time.

Well then i wouldn't believe what the other countries say either so it is all relative. I should also add that I heard USA holds the gold that belongs to other countries as well in storage. For example Ukraine sent it all here.

IKE - I will gladly take that bet. Showing me charts mean nothing, it is a con game that is going on and it will be exposed soon. Trust me I hope I lose the bet, but I know a few high connected people and they quietly make their move. Dead bankers showing up all over the world is no coincidence.

Jimukr104 - China has more gold than USA and so does Russia. The reduction of oil prices is to force Russia into the corner, Saudi is on the game as they are a puppet state controlled by the USA.
America hasn't had their gold audited because they will not allow it. Germany and other countries have petitioned to have their gold back from American banks, they haven't received it all as of yet.
Ukraine did not send its gold to America, the mercenaries stole the gold in that skirmish a few months back. What do you think they did when they invaded Libya? They stole Ghaddafi's gold and a lot of it is apparently in Israel.

Peregrine - gold and silver may not save you but it can buy you more time. Guns aren't any good since we don't have the right to bear arms in Canada. Right now there is a big push to disarm the public in the USA, gun control they call it.

Better be in gold or silver - otherwise IKE has no downside. Wink

I wouldn't know anything about a right to bear arms, but guns are easily obtainable in Canada.

RE: What will our money be worth in 40-50 years?
Getting a gun in Canada puts a bullseye on your back as your logged and track by Government. When shit hits the fan they will go after gun owners first.

Gun laws in a Canada are very strict. You can get a handgun through many hoops but then your can take it to a range and back and thats it. I believe how its transported to the range and during what hours is regulated also.

To chime in on USA gold. They have none. I.e. the Government. It hasn't been physically seen since the 70s I believe and they refuse to return countries gold that ask. France had to come in in a near act of war with a war-ship into New York to demand it back. Evrey other State has been told to fuck off.

China is aggressive in gold purchasing and only takes physical deliveries. No paper. Its citizens aggressively put their little and meager savings into silver. India has via government and culturally been into gold, for a good stretch much of the activity was between China and India for those large scale attainments.

The game of musical chairs is all tied to oil and geo-poltics. The $USD is directly tied to oil and its the most rapid way they can cycle Treasury Bonds for debt. For all this talk on low prices nobody knows the affect on the $USD. We see a dead cat bounce from industry and manufacturing in scooping up rock bottom oil but prior to the 2008 crash oil was in a comma also and it eventually hit the $USD in the shins.

The game all ends with global conflict. America with be eaten alive internally but it will be bogged down and drained internationally in attempts to prop up the oil game.

My take is that escalation happens during Hillary's term(s).

Kosko well stated my brother.

China and India are aggressively buying gold, even encouraging their citizens to do so. China holds the US debt as we all know, the Chinese are buying up buildings and land in the USA like no ones business. Google - Chinese city New York.

Canada is not encouraging their citizens to buy gold, in fact we have jewellers encouraging you to sell your gold and silver for cash. Trust me these guys know the game and what the future will bring.

One of the main reasons why Iraq and Libya were quickly attacked, was because their leaders were trading their oil away from the petro-dollar.
