Companies are still hiring. Check Kijiji. There are new jobs every day. If you move to Grand Prairie or Edmonton, you could probably have a job the next day.

When are people going to wake up to the fact that economists don't know shit?

Yes it is just pure speculation but some can be accurate. Better to be an optimist.

Hmm if you have read the thread then I suggest going here and giving this page a good look, it will answer every one of your questions

I appreciate your response, that is where I started and ended on page 145, it took me a few days, but I did read it. (I'll read it again, I am sure I missed a few comments)
Now back to the oil crashing, has anyone noticed companies closing up there hiring phase? I saw some say on other forums that some companies are laying off people and some are just not hiring anymore.
Any leads on who still might be? the drilling companies?
Also read somewhere it's a waste of time to apply in Fort Mac as the workers there are there to work not hire, is it true to apply at the head offices through Calgary and Edmonton for better chances?
For drilling companies I heard from a friend that worked for Nabors Drilling that their hiring stops in Jan, is there any truth to that?
I'm not trying to be cunty, lord knows I came with many questions and a lot of people from this thread have assisted me but I like to think I did some of my own leg work. Some of your questions can be answered very easily for instance

Nabors Drilling have a phone number, here it is
http://www.nabors.com/about-nabors/contact-us
I would suggest you call them and speak to one of their recruitment agents and ask whether they are hiring or not. Then I would call Trinidad, Precision, Ensign etc.
Side note: If you think Vancouver is a shit hole I would suggest you steer clear of Edmonton, Fort Mac and basically everywhere else your going to find work

You're right, I shouldn't be lazy, sorry if I came off like that, I appreciate the eye opener,
cheers

He asks about the price of oil affecting his chances of finding work but I would look at the fact he mentioned coming in Jan/Feb for rig work, asking what courses are needed, saying he will work a month (rig rotation is 2-1), and many other things that show he hasnt properly read the thread and/or do some very basic research.
This guys issue wont be the price of oil it will be his own lack of preparation.
Rig guys hate this attitude of looking to be spoonfeed and not being able to do it by yourself.
This will show during a job interview and it will show when you go to work on a rig.
You wont get hired and if you do youll be the first to get fired.
I cant even tell if he is maybe trolling - three years in Edmonton and you never heard of Fort Mc?
not trolling, you guys are absolutely right, I should really get off my ass and do the leg work, been calling around now, there are some ups and downs, but not going to give up just yet.
By no means am I looking to be spoonfed, as I mentioned I must of been associating with the wrong people when I lived out there, first year the family and I lived in the area between Churchill Sation and Stadium station, 2nd and 3rd we lived in the townhouses a few blocks away from West Edmonton Mall.
Again, I apologize for coming off as lazy,
Cheers
Edit: Just to add, I said I would work up to a month as long as there was time off to go visit my family.
I always thought store bought vitamins were stupid.
But then I started taking Vitamin D halfway through night shift - holy shit! Productivity, mood, and attention went through the roof.
I'm not sure where this belongs but if you're struggling with night shift I recommend anyone start taking some vitamin D and zinc.

Most Vitamin D is plain Vitamin D; just straight up worthless garbage, it has low to no bioavailability. Vitamin D3 is the best for maximum absorption by far.
It's actually the only essential vitamin that's also recognized as a very important hormone, potent stuff and also highly recommend it if you want constant energy and alertness.
What brand are you using?

A few years ago I started taking vitamin D in liquid form (forgot how many drops I was taking) and had the same reaction as you. Change in mood was absolutely noticeable. Stopped taking it once it ran out and forgot about it soon after. Wish I could remember where I got it from.
Nature Made D3 2000 IU.
I've been taking two.
I got it at Wal Mart or CVS before this hitch.
Pretty sure I got the idea from a Brandon Carter video or somewhere on the forum...either way I think I was told to get D3.

if you're a always tired or in a bad mood on night shift take some melatonin and velvet bean root extract right before bed.
deepest and best sleeps you'll ever have. sleep 4 hours and you still feel great mentally and physically
I've thought about doing melatonin...but I usually sleep really well actually. I manage my coffee well and don't have problems passing the fuck out after working.
What is velvet beam root?!
I try to take as little pills as possible....but that's just me.
I got it initially as part of a supplement my friend gave me. I looked into it and it has serotonin and l-dopa (dopamine precursor). it's some kind of plant from the amazon
serotonin helps with your mood (I always got depressed on night shift) and l dopa is used for Parkinson and I've read a few studies suggesting it increases sleep quality .
that being said from my experiences its almost like it helps you get into deep sleap and rem more quickly than I'f you weren't taking it. Sometimes had very vivideo dreams but I always woke up refreshed.
Ive also heard claims if boosts testosterone but there's not a ton of research aside from its use in snake venom treatments

Melatonin is a life saver for those of us who flip shifts often. Sometimes I'll work for a month straight 8-3pm daily in town, then just like that I need to go out of town on a shutdown or a quick job for a week and it'll be a 6pm-6am graveyard shift.
The melatonin helps the body adjust faster.
I'm currently in the process of introducing my younger brother into my world e.g. game, fitness, self improvement etc. (you all know the spiel). I can only talk to him so much on Skype so before we both start to despise each other. So I try to sent an article or blog post every other day that I think will be beneficial to him. I've recently been reading a lot of Victor Prides blog where I found an interesting article titled '18 Things Every 18 Year Old Should Know'. Check out number 14

I would say the key to 14 is being able to focus with your 6 months off.
I have been guilty of relaxing too much during my time, which leads to me always having to go back. If you want to break the cycle, you have to be able to work as hard(if not harder) mentally during you time off as you do physically while working for 6 months.

Any rig companies out there that offer a 28 on 28 off type of scheduling format? Asking this as it would be ideal for travel.
Darius 路 2014-12-23 21:51:00 路 #3644
Just thought I would add that I got a job offer today from Clean Harbour's. They are a huge oilfield company which seem to have their fingers in everything from from exploration to oilfield services to shutdown/cleanup work. I directly contacted the person in charge of hiring before applying through the website. Not sure if this is part of the reason I got the offer.
Hopefully this reassures some of the people worried about companies not hiring.

Not onshore unless you work in management/directional services and even then its not fixed. Crew is two weeks on, one off.

Merry Christmas fellas, I know that some of you are all alone in Alberta, maybe for the first time, but don't worry ol uncle Scotian is alone too and drunk as fuck tonight in 3rd world shit hole, trust me, you'll get used to it.....I wish you fuckers the best of luck in the new year although things aren't looking so good for the oil patch these days. I'm hoping things will pick up in the next few months but you never know, if the fit hits the shan and we lose it all, I guess I'll see you guys at the Mustard Seed downtown come April! On a more positive note, here's one of the only uplifting article I've read in recent weeks, makes sense to me:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on...e22195469/Merry Christmas everyone, cheers
The oil price drop shit is a bit mental - something to factor into things sure, but not something that should cancel out moving out here totally as in cancelling it altoghether. Hasn't affected me really because I still work in Edmonton doing stuff that's not dependant too much on fluctuations (accident not design)
Seems as if there's still quite a bit of hiring going on. Redwater etc.
Hey everyone,
Before I dig into this thread, just wanted to ask: Is oil industry work disabled-friendly?
I have a mild case of cerebral palsy. I struggle with fine motor tasks, balance, and, quite frankly, I can't move as quickly as 'normal' people. I realize this isn't painting a very good picture of my abilities, but most people are very surprised when I tell them that I'm disabled.
I have plenty of hauling experience, though, and did some basic construction work this past summer . . .
Thanks,
