Ghomeshi has now been formally charged with sexual assault: Link

Toronto police said in a statement that Ghomeshi has been charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcome resistance - choking.

The 47-year-old is set to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

Toronto police launched an investigation into Ghomeshi at the end of October, after he was fired from the CBC.

The broadcaster said it dismissed Ghomeshi on Oct. 26 after it saw "graphic evidence" that he had allegedly harmed a woman.

Ghomeshi later opened up in a Facebook post claiming that he had engaged in "rough sex," but claimed that the sex had been consensual.

Nine women have come forward with allegations of physical and sexual assault against Ghomeshi, with many speaking anonymously to the media. At least three women have filed complaints to police.

The agreement still needs to be formalized through a court -- a step Thompson said is expected in the near future.

Ghomeshi had also filed a union grievance against the CBC alleging dismissal without cause, a matter which Thompson said still remains active.

"That's the next piece," he said. "That process still needs to unfold."

A lawyer for Ghomeshi confirmed that the lawsuit between his client and the CBC "has been resolved."

"CBC and Mr Ghomeshi will address all issues in the lawsuit in binding arbitration in accordance with the collective agreement between them," said Jonathan Lisus. "Counsel appointed by the union will have carriage of the arbitration."

The CBC has said it decided to fire Ghomeshi after seeing "graphic evidence" that he had physically injured a woman.

Since his dismissal, nine women have come forward with allegations, some dating back a decade, that Ghomeshi sexually or physically assaulted them, and police are investigating complaints by at least three of them.

Ghomeshi -- who faces no charges -- admitted in a lengthy Facebook post published on Oct. 26, the day he was fired, that he engaged in "rough sex," but insisted his encounters with women were consensual.

In a follow-up post a few days later, he said he would meet the flurry of allegations against him "directly," but has not made any public statements since.

The allegations against Ghomeshi led the CBC to launch an independent investigation into the scandal, a process that is being spearheaded by a Toronto employment lawyer with expertise in workplace harassment.

The CBC has urged anyone who worked on any of Ghomeshi's shows to contact lead investigator Janice Rubin with any complaints, concerns or experiences involving harassment, discrimination, violence or other inappropriate workplace conduct.

The broadcaster has also begun its search for a permanent replacement for Ghomeshi on "Q" and is looking at possibly changing the name of the program in the future.

As fucked up as Ghomeshi likely was, I think it is a travesty to charge this man with such a crime when there was no rape kit investigation done and these women are speaking out so long after the fact. Now, he's in a situation where he has to prove his innocence rather than them prove his guilt with police reports and forensic evidence.

Knowing how Toronto works I'm sure he'll go down for this, but I don't agree with it.

Back when I had a 9-5 job (I'm Canadian, by the way), I shared an office with a woman who was then in her late 20s. A self-described feminist with short hair, who was very involved in the local arts scene. She'd usually get to the office at around 10am, with her Starbucks coffee, danish and iPhone in hand, fire up her computer, open up her emails and launch iTunes to pull up the CBC stream to listen to Jian on Q. This was the daily routine.

It got to the point where I couldn't take it anymore and politely suggested we switch to music or that she use headphones. The show was interesting when it had high profile guests, but day after day it gets annoying.

With this story emerging, it made me think back to those times in that office, since it was there that I most often listened to Jian on Q. This morning I took a look at my former co-worker's Facebook page. She's shared and endorsed the post by that musician "friend" who threw Jian under the bus. She added to the post: "I never cared for Jian."

A woman who listened to him every day, in a public workspace, has simply tossed him aside, turning her back on him and retroactively adjusted her opinion.

This made me absolutely fucking livid today. Nobody is safe anymore. This poor bastards life has been taken from him, he'll likely be broke at the end of this and have a tarnished image forever. Because a few said he did something. No evidence or anything just his words vs theirs. Between this and a few other things currently happening, I have lost most if not all hope for Canada.

(1) Admit that he is a criminal,

(2) Adopt the belief that 15 women that he had sex with just HAPPENED to be bad apples and liars, or

(3) Admit that the world would be better off if women didn't run it.
