I'm thinking of moving out of NYC. It's just too expensive.

Any suggestions on cities? I'm not working at the moment, so I'm flexible on where I go.

Preferences:
1. Decent abundance of attractive chicks. Coming from NYC, I realize I'm spoiled, but hoping the dropoff doesn't make me cry. I'm mostly into white chicks if that helps.

2. Non-ridiculous levels of competition. Again, coming from NYC, where the m:f ratio is skewed in favor of guys, I'm spoiled, so am bound to take a hit anywhere else, but hoping it's not so bad that I am forced into porn addiction.

3. Lower cost of living. So Vegas is out.

4. Relatively large city with plenty of anonymity. I can't move to no small town.

5. Weather. Can't deal with Pacific Northwest type constantly rainy weather. Nor Houston type humidity.

6. Good transport infrastructure would be nice, but I suppose I'd need a car anywhere outside NYC, so fine, I'll bite that bullet.

Just off the top of my head: Chicago. If you can't deal with the weather than maybe Miami? Its not "cheap" but its certainly cheaper than NYC or DC (which I wouldn't recommend anyway )

What is your interpretation of big city? To some people it could be millions and to others it could be 100,000. Also, what is your weather preference? Do you want something similar to NYC or someplace warmer? Is the job market a factor?

There is a lot of under-rated tier 2 cities in the U.S that are actually pretty cool. I guess my only suggestion is to make a list of what factors are going to influence your decision the most and narrow it down from there.

On number 3, Vegas is not that expensive unless you plan to be gambling every weekend.

I'd recommend for you San Diego. While nothing in California is cheap, it's cheaper than NYC.

Sure. It is cheaper than SF also. And Orange County (Laguna, Newport).

But it very well might be #4 in the country.

It is called "Sunshine Tax".

And the dough made is way lower in San Diego.

San Diego is probably the highest price/lowest wage disparity location in America.

I think you can by a crib for like 60k.

(Unless you are hitting The Strip every night, gambling, bottle service, limos, 5 star restaurants, and strip clubs, the place is very affordable. If you are doing those things, well then yeah, it might be the most expensive).

By your list, I think you should stay in NYC.

I've thought about moving to Colorado based off of the demographic's you find showing it to be one of the thinnest states. That and certain drug laws are lax.

San Diego also a good choice.

I would say Charlotte, NC because it has plenty of hot white girls who are friendly but it's not the largest of cities.

Austin Texas is a favorite of mine.

Always wanted to check out Nashville.

Id say Raleigh is better. Girls are alot more friendly and down to earth and not so stuck on who is driving the bentley parked outside the club in Uptown Charlotte. Then you have the BEACH / AWESOME college town in Wilmington only an hour away.

Only reason someone should choose Charlotte over Raleigh is if you just love the more upscale clubbing scene. (I find the girls alot more pretentious in this scene) Raleigh has a few of those places but you will have more options in Charlotte.

Vegas: Didn't realize Vegas was that cheap. I suppose I'm still afraid I'll blow too much money on the Strip. But I'll look into rents out there. And obviously Vegas would be a pussy nirvana.

I just want a city big enough that I don't start running into the same people over and over. No idea how big that means. Maybe 1mm+?

Weather: so long as it isn't crazy rainy (Pac NW), crazy humid (Houston, parts of FL), crazy cold (Chicago), I'm good. I'm fine with NY and that gets pretty hot in the summer, and pretty cold in the winter, but not to very uncomfortable extremes.

No, job market not a major factor. I'll have to come back to NY (probably) when I'm ready to work (finance). The South has some appeal because it means I can come back to see family in NY area more frequently and more cheaply, as opposed to the West.

Trust me, every guy in America has thought at least once, "Maybe I should move to San Diego! The beach. Girls. The weather, and it's not ethnic and dangerous like Miami! I could be a bartender! It's cheaper than LA! Plus I won't have to compete with guys with Ferrari's! And more straight than SF!"

Hence tons of guys.

And there is no "industry" to keep the girls (ie modeling, fashion etc) so they move to LA.

And cost of things ie drinks, food, cabs, is on par with LA, SF or Miami, but many times lower quality.

A general concern about the Rockies and west. All the single people maps I've seen show a much worse guy:girl ratio once you get as far west as the Rockies, and all the way to the Pacific coast. My guess is that your game needs to be really good out there to do well. Mine is mediocre and I'm not a terribly good looking guy, so bad demographics means an uphill battle for me.

How does the ratio compare in the South?

Yep, I've thought the exact same thing, and that's why I was concerned the ratio would be bad. Thanks for confirming.

What about Santa Barbara? I suppose the same dynamics are in effect - lots of draws for the guys, not a lot to keep the girls there.

One thing I should have mentioned in the OP (too late to edit it) is that I'm mid-30s. So obviously I wouldn't want a city where everyone is married young and there's no singles scene where a mid-30s guy could easily fit in.

Haven't been to Santa Barbara in a while.

The thing that Santa Barbara has going for it, is it is a college town, and the college dominates the action.

I would suspect that girls over 23 would have a hard time staying.

Was just in Santa Barbara last week. Nice little town. If you are college age and can fit in with that crowd, there's tons of pussy up there. I used to go to some of the famed Halloween parties around the campus(Isla Vista) when I was in my early 20s. I don't know how old you are.

Just keep in mind that SB is for college students, wealthy retirees and for LA couples looking for a romantic getaway. If you don't fit into those slots you might have a hard time finding your niche.

Interesting. Never would have thought of Philly. But I suppose I could get even lower costs of living by moving further south.

I don't 'want' NY weather. I just don't want extreme cold, extreme humidity or extreme wet. And 1mm population figure was just a throw out number. I only care that it's enough people that you don't feel like you're running into the same people over and over. Maybe the population needed for that is a lot less than 1mm? Maybe 400k?

As for competition, I just want to avoid a tougher time getting easy sex due to a high male:female ratio, which I suspect is the case from the Rockies on westward.

Here's how some of the cities mentioned in this thread stack up - all 1BR medians:
NYC: 3200 (no, that is not a typo)
DC: 2550
San Diego: 1500
Austin: 1177
Philly: 1050 (holy shit, I was surprised it was so cheap. I wonder if that rent puts you in a neighborhood with the roaming teen

That settles it. I am getting the fuck out of NY. Just have to figure out where to go.
