Archeological evidence of a great flood
I've been studying a lot of pre-historic literature surrounding the great flood myth. Surprisingly, a lot of cultures completely unrelated to each other have a very similar great flood story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_flood_myths

I'm wondering what archeological evidence from across the world has been discovered. I also wonder if the whole theory of Atlantis is related to a pre-historical society wiped out by a great flood.

Studying these stories is like trying to remember a dream.

A lot of ancient society mentions a great flood other than the Bible.

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
Telling a story about a flood that happened in any area and making it an important story for children to pass on is a variable that let the descendants of the story tellers live to this day to tell the tale. Those that did not know about previous floods in the area drowned when a freak food happened. You know who does not have freak flood stories? Peruvian Indians and Eskimos.

Edgar caycee spoke quite often of Atlantis.

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
I love this topic. Almost every culture in the world has a myth of a worldwide flood.

The best theory I've heard is the melting of the ice caps approx 12,000 years ago.

Here's a map of what the world looked like prior to the end of the last ice age:

All the terrain in brown used to be above sea level- millions of square miles of land.

Humans lived on that land.

The ice caps melted and flooded the whole world. Entire cultures wiped out.

There's evidence to back it up.

Watch this documentary, Underworld: Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age.

Graham Hancock (the host) uncovered underwater ruins around Malta, dating back to when the area was above water.

What appears to be ruins of a city found off the coast of India 120 feet underwater. The last time this land was above sea level? 9,500 years ago.

Take some time and watch this, mind-blowing stuff.

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
Check the Ebook When the Sky fell, it has been updated, wrote by a canadian couple: Rand something.
they have a quite controversial theory based on the crust displacement.
to make it short: Antarctica used to be placed at a higher latitude or altitude, cant tell which is the right term but it would have been placed sometime between mid atlantic near the brazil shores but displacement pushed it down south. This explains why fauna, flora and primordial fishes and flora were of the ones you find in tropical weather and not in sub antarctic ones.
I love these books. And Graham Hancock is one of my favourite writers

P.S: the Rands believe atlantis was once Antarctica. They have a site where the world is not seem from a northern perspective but from a southern one. And if you look at Antarctica and what lands are nearby you start to make a pattern about the great island in the southern seas, it is quite amazing. If the ice caps could be melt, despite the world lower shores would drown immediately, if we could just witness what civilization was captured in the ice, what they left behind, I think we would have quite a few surprises.

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
There have been a few academics (Robert Ballard being the most notable) who have proposed that the flood myths come from the flooding of the Caspian Sea. It would make sense if that were true. The global flood that Biblical literalists insist happened almost certainly didn't.

It doesn't even have to be one flood. There could have been multiple floods that wiped out villages and tribes throughout history. We had a flood in Alberta a year ago that would have killed lots of people if we didn't have advance warning that it was coming.

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
Civilization may be much, much older than archaeologists previously thought:

http://www.sott.net/article/271881-Gunun...f-Atlantis

"The established archaeological view of the state of human civilization until the end of the last Ice Age about 9,600 BC was that our ancestors were primitive hunter gatherers incapable of any form of civilization or architectural feats. In the following millennia settled agriculture was very gradually developed and perfected. Around 4,000 BC the increasing sophistication of economic and social structures, and growing organizational abilities, made possible the creation of the earliest megalithic sites (such as Gigantija on the Maltese island of Gozo for example) while the first true cities emerged around 3500 BC in Mesopotamia and soon afterwards in Egypt. In the British Isles Callanish in the Outer Hebrides and Avebury in southwest England, both dated to around 3,000 BC, are the oldest examples of true megalithic sites. The megalithic phase of Stonehenge is thought to have begun around 2,400 BC and to have continued to around 1,800 BC.

Within this well worked out and long-established chronology there is no place for any prehistoric civilization such as Atlantis. But interestingly the Greek philosopher Plato, whose dialogue of Timias and Critias contains the earliest surviving mention of the fabled sunken kingdom, dates the catastrophic destruction and submergence of Atlantis by floods and earthquakes to "9,000 years before the time of Solon" - i.e. to 9,600 BC, the end of the last Ice Age. Since the Greeks had no access to modern scientific knowledge about the Ice Age and its rapidly rising sea levels (often accompanied by cataclysmic earthquakes as the weight of the melting ice caps was removed from the continental landmasses) the date Plato gives is, to say the least, an uncanny coincidence.

In Danny Natawidjaja's view, however, it is no coincidence at all. His research at Gunung Padang has convinced him that Plato was right about the existence of a high civilization in the depths of the last Ice Age - a civilization that was indeed brought to a cataclysmic end involving floods and earthquakes in an epoch of great global instability between 10,900 BC and 9,600 BC."

RE: Archeological evidence of a great flood
Here in Peru, the Incas had, or should I say have their own flood story. Their God, Viracocha, created all living things including giants. These giants became evil and had to be destroyed. Everything alive died except for one man and one woman who went to multiply and repopulate the lands. This is apparently why Lake Titicaca exists at it's altitude. It's a leftover pool from the flood. As far as actual evidence I don't know. I've read that seashells can be found in the highlands.

I remember as a kid hiking in the San Bernardino mountains in California and finding seashells once in a dried riverbed which sparked my curiosity in this long ago.

It's too strange, how all of these cultures, who had no idea of each other's existence share so many stories, and legends that directly parallel each other and go hand in hand with the Bible. Even if one is a Richard Dawkins worshipping atheist, stuff like this is reason to pause and at least wonder.

God, Family, Country. The three things in life worth fighting for. Except for God; all are dead. Now it's just me, the road and God. Don't know where it will lead, but for right now...

It's funny, if you read the Zohar (jewish mysticism) and even Greek mythology you'll see a similar claim of "giants" who became evil and needed to be killed off.

I hope one day all of these questions can be answered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doggerland

Atlantis is Doggerland:

As the ice caps melted, the huge landmass was flooded until only an island was left:

This happened between 10.000bc and 5.000bc by the way when Doggerland was the most fertile of all Europe and might have been home to many thousands of people.

Read Platos description of where it is in the Atlantic Ocean = Atlantis Ocean and the description of the dikes, the many animals living there (mammoth = elephant in plato etc) and the 'fairest of people' and it is very real that the people of Doggerland ventured south as sea levels rose, becoming some of the people to found ancient Greece, taking a turn east-ward and becoming the Aryans/Indo-Europeans.

Some speculate that latter Stonehenge was built as a monument to the dead at Doggerland.

I am very certain we have not heard the last of the influence of Doggerland at the early European cultures.

See my post above.

Stonehenge may also be older than thought. No real way to carbon date rock.

I firmly believe these flooding stories are indeed the remnants of the early post-glacial people describing how their worlds were flooded when the massive ice caps melted rising sea levels by hundreds of feet. Civilizations could be lost because of it. I just read a story about how woven cloth has now been proven to have been around as early as 25000 bc and that trepanation/brain surgery was done successfully as early as 8000bc. Doesn't exactly line up with the idea that civilization only began 4000 bc.

It's interesting that the story of the Tower of Babel in the Bible happens a relatively short time after the Great Flood. For anyone who isn't familiar with the Tower of Babel:

Genesis 11:1-9 Wrote:Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” 8 So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

So basically, after the flood God told Noah and his descendents to scatter and repopulate the Earth. But the people instead tried to unite themselves under a single ruler, civilization and language, and set out to build a giant tower as a symbol of their unity, in defiance of God's command. And so in response God divided the people into numerous separate nations, scattering them across the Earth and giving each a different language.

This perfectly accounts for the fact that almost every civilization on Earth has a great flood mythology, a fact which otherwise must strike us as incredibly bizarre and unlikely. Of course, a critic would argue that the idea of God confusing peoples' languages and physically scattering them across the Earth is unlikely, to which I reply that if one does believe in a God sufficiently powerful to have created the entire universe from scratch, surely mixing up languages and physically moving human beings is not a difficult feat, much less an impossible or unlikely one.

"For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. But the word of the Lord endureth forever.” - 1 Peter 1:24-25

Scorpion, not all civilizations, but many Middle Eastern ones did. It certainly is a very common thread among mythologies.

Bojangles, there are actually books (Chariots of the Gods comes readily to mind) that propound aliens as an explanation.

Aye, that's why I actually posted it, I read Chariots of the Gods around 5 years ago. A lot of it is bollocks but it's the Hindu mythology part of the Ancient Aliens theory that kind of gets me intrigued the most.

This is probably the Tower of Babel, it is still pretty impressive. On the Mesopotamian plain. Map

Anybody read this? http://www.amazon.com/Bible-Unearthed-Ar...684869136/ Not about the flood but seems like it would interest some of y'all. (Obviously literalists will not like it.) I read it many years back and thought it was great.

The description from Amazon:

Quote:In this groundbreaking work that sets apart fact and legend, authors Finkelstein and Silberman use significant archeological discoveries to provide historical information about biblical Israel and its neighbors.

In this iconoclastic and provocative work, leading scholars Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman draw on recent archaeological research to present a dramatically revised portrait of ancient Israel and its neighbors. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) at digs in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon suggests that many of the most famous stories in the Bible—the wanderings of the patriarchs, the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua’s conquest of Canaan, and David and Solomon’s vast empire—reflect the world of the later authors rather than actual historical facts.

Challenging the fundamentalist readings of the scriptures and marshaling the latest archaeological evidence to support its new vision of ancient Israel, The Bible Unearthed offers a fascinating and controversial perspective on when and why the Bible was written and why it possesses such great spiritual and emotional power today.
