I would definitely like to use your service for this, and I find the price more than fair. I should be out there in a month from now, would be nice to have the resume out of the way...since I've worked most of my life at just one company it's hard for me to make a resume look 'full' enough.

My resume is ok I think, but my biggest problem is my cover letters. I always end up almost listing my qualifications. Comes off as mechanical almost. No real convincing of why they should hire me over some other guy with a similar background.

This should be good to, in the very least, have a point of reference to work off of. Right now I'm basing it off of what I'd want to read in a resume and what the internet tells me is a good resume/cover letter.

Who knows, applied to like 5 lab places today, maybe I'll get a call back and have something lined up for next week. I thought you were one of them at first when you called ahahha.

It is mentioned plenty in the above link but you don't need this service is get work in Alberta. Scotain, myself, and many others have written in great detail how to apply for work and where to find it. I am always happy to answer questions on this thread and via PM. Don't feel any pressure to use this service, its only for people who want me to personally put together a resume for them.

Limiting belief that they'll hire you with no safety tickets. Just give them a good story and show them your not afraid to work and they'll pick you up in a heartbeat, that what happened with me. If your really serious, you'd be at the job fair and put your safety tickets on your resume and tell them you can start wed or thurs the next week and have your ticket courses on monday and tuesday.

There's no excuses, there's enough information leading to what you would want to do. There's tons of options here, just pick one. Any trade/profession out here can lead to 100k+/year after 2-5 years. Hell, there's different seasons for different jobs and if your willing to work and hustle making 80k in your first year is very doable. I've already outlined the work cycles already.

For green guys the GP job fair is your best if you can get there by tomorrow, then there's the edmonton job fair at the end of this week.

@ JOAT - That isn't true. My friend goes west every year and starts his drilling job in the beginning of December (company is always under staffed). He works until a few days before Xmas, then comes back and goes hard until late March, early April. All depends on what line of work you're in.

Left home 2 in the afternoon yesterday, got back just before 8. Before I even take off my shirt I notice water on the carpet in front of my bathroom. Walk into the bathroom and it's a fucking a aquarium. The toilet tank was cracked and I've got water everywhere. Half the apartment is soaked. Just what I needed after a 20 hour shift and I have to do the same shift tonight.

Man the Maritimes are fucked and I've basically given up on moving home, not that I couldn't if I wanted to, I just passed up on an opportunity to work a 3/3 rotation on a huge offshore rig 300 kms off the coast of Nfld, two of my best friends took the job and they're out there now. I could also ust do a rotation out of Alberta and fly back but to be honest, there's other places I'd rather live in Canada. The East Coast will be a decent place to retire in but any young, ambitious person who wants to get ahead in life has to leave, it is kind of sad but they dick heads back there elect these fucking morons, so fuck them all!

What's up guys ! This is my first post here... I end up on this forum while looking on the internet about rigs job. It took a bit of time before I can write post because of the registration stuff, but now I'm happy that I can start talking with you guys. I read a big part of this thread and it was clearly the kind of info I was looking for. Some parts I already know but for most it help me realise that the move to come here in alberta worth the shot.

As you can read I'm a frenchy from mtl so my english is a bit sketchy loll.. but anyway here's my story... I was looking for good money and a friend of mine (ex co-worker) decide to make the move to come to edmonton a year ago to works on the rigs and he was always telling me how great it was over here... after months of research to get all the infos I need I decide to drove from mtl to edmonton. I just arrived 4 days ago at the hi edmonton hostel. So far its a great place and really close to everything you need.

I did the h2s alive on oct. 2 and today I have started to hit all the office in nisku off the big drilling companies as Im looking for a leasehand job. Even for a friday I think it was good. I have been able to met many recruiters. But as the day go some tends to finish early so I dont have the time to see all of the companies... lots of them told me that in the next weeks its gonna get busy so to keep calling them for a follow up... anyway I'll continue on monday to hit them until I get hired

Im really motivated because every person I met here told me I did the right things to come here and that I will find something soon and to keep knocking at the doors of drilling companies.

I'll keep you update with my story and if you have any advice or clue for me let me know... thx guys

This has been discussed and it seems that people have had different experiences with this issue. For me applying for rig work, my degree definitely raised a few eyebrows and not in a good way. My original resume emphasized my education and engineering background, but I quickly learned that this isn't what they want to see for leasehands.

I was under the impression that having engineering experience would be a benefit, but this was not so. In one particular interview at the end I asked the recruiter if there's anything in my background that she thinks would make me unsuitable for the job. She told me it would be better if I had more labor experience. Thankfully I had been employed as a furniture mover so I pointed out that and discussed the long hours and physically strenuous conditions of the job. That saved me and I got offered a position in that company as a leasehand.

After that interview I created a second resume. I now have one resume that emphasizes my education and engineering background, which I am using to apply for MWD and similar positions. And another resume emphasizing my laboring background to apply for leasehand positions. But I still have my degree on the my leasehand resume I'd never leave it out, it's just not prominent i.e. on my leasehand resume my degree takes up three lines, while on my MWD resume it takes up over half a page.

I left there pretty discouraged and pissed off but I'll chalk that up to a 12 hr drive 3 hours of sleep and eating nothing but energy drinks beer and trail mix over the course of 2 days

I just need to sleep. eat some real food. etc maybe go talk to the cuties at u of a down the road

on a side note the hostel here looks greheheasy and there's a bunch of crackheads outside. is my shit going to get broken into parking there overnight?

Should be fine, I parked there over night a bunch of times over the summer (staying at a friend's place near the hostel) and didn't have a problem, just don't leave valuables out. Its not a rough area but ya, you may see some sketchy people hanging out around there, they usually won't bother you.

I'm sure you know this already but you will be disappointed with the outcome of many of your first interviews. Learn from them and keep going, I don't want to preach, I'm in no position to and you don't want to hear it. But I was in your exact situation just two weeks ago, you've read the thread, you know exactly what your doing.

Side note: When your back in the hostel at night looking back on your day, doesn't it feel like you've done more in one day than you have in the last week. For me at least, from the time I woke up at 5.30 am until going to bed it's just one thing after another, you barely have time to eat. But it feels good everyday your edging closer to where you want to be. And it's crazy how much things can change in the space of a day. Provided your doing the work you go to bed Monday with nothing. You wake up on Tuesday with several job offers, a lead on an apartment etc. Those first few weeks are a fast pace of life. These last few days have been the first time in a month where I don't have a specific layout of goals for my entire day. It's mad I actually spent the day in the West Ed mall, chattin to birds, and going to the water park. After being on the hunt for a few weeks it seems crazy to spend a day enjoying yourself.

Anyway I'm rambling, don't worry about the hostel man everyone in and around there are fairly harmless. The natives are always asking you for money but there surprisingly polite about it. You tell them "no" and they walk off. It is not that way back in Limerick Ireland. You could give a junkie a few $ and they'll still call ya a cunt. I was considering doing a write up on how to maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle while staying in a hostel. Because as you know the worst thing that could happen to you is to get sick while your looking for work. I found out that there's a gym on the far end of Whyte Ave. called Snap Fitness. The 4 and 94 bus goes right by there. You can get a 40 day membership for $9. If you ever find you have a bit of free time in the evening this might a good call to get your head right. Lord knows staring into laptop screens and running around Nisku all day will give any man head aches.

This is probably the muddiest lease I have ever seen. I have already ripped the mud flaps off my truck and seen multiple people drive straight off the road into the ditch. The 10km to camp is like some pro level out of a rally simulation video game.
Its pretty epic haha

I worked on the Rigs for a couple weeks this summer, was definitely an eye-opening experience. It's fucking hard, but the money was unreal

Oh man, I got lost one time trying to find out camp after I borrowed another guy from my Crew's truck, and... fuck I was getting kind of worried lmao. Phone died, and I couldn't text anyone. Kept driving and after 90 minutes of going around, my gas was getting low.

And the dust from trucks driving at some points was fucking "thick", was getting worried I'd be hit by one of the big Trucks flying down the hills sometimes because I could barely see.

Luckily one of the other guys driving past me knew how to get to my Companies Rig (Was waving a few down) and I got back before it was dark.
