I worked mainline pipeline constuction as a straw and quit about 15 years ago do my own thing. I have been looking for an adventure and this has been on my short list for a few years. I'll probably have a few questions after I reread this a time or two.

I'm debating whether I should get snow tires here or there.

If I got them here I wouldn't have to worry about storing/selling my all seasons, wouldn't have to worry about encountering snow on the Coquihalla driving there, but I would put 1000-2000 km of wear on them before it snows and my gas mileage would hurt.

If I got them there I'd be risking another snowfall (like earlier this month) driving there/through the city, but would be able to get a couple bucks for my old tires (they may be nearing the end of their life anyways). And i'd have to spend another couple hundred on all seasons come spring/summer.

I have never put winter tires on, always have been using all seasons. Realistically if you drive slowly on sketchy roads and be careful on how far you pull over you should never get stuck. Never had a work truck with winter tires either which should say a lot as well. Just have good all season tires- they will be good in mud come the spring/summer as well.

And make sure you have a tow rope (never chain- could snap back and go through your window!)- will come in handy if you need to flag down another truck to help you out of the ditch or you can help out others and stockpile some karma!

Edit- then again, I don't think I have driven a car since I was a teenager... If you don't have a 4x4 truck then maybe someone else should chime in. If you have a 4 wheel drive truck then stick with all seasons.

I drive a 4x4. I'd still opt for winter tires especially if you're travelling out of the city during the thick of winter.

You can get away with with all seasons if you've been driving on ice covered roads since you were a teenager and on the farm paths. If not, put some winters on.

From ontario and considering coming out in the next month. I have a no trade experience other than tree work. I hold a DZ license. I realize there are loads of guys with lots of specific trade tickets and obviously employers like guys with certification in trades. My queastion is, is it fairly easy to get a camp job as a general labourer ?or do most of these camp jobs go to guys with certification already in the trades. My goal is to work from Novemeber -April and bank $20000-$25000. Is this realistic? or am I dreaming? lol. I only want camp work. Any tips will help. I Appreciate it!

Typed my resignation letter today, 2 weeks and I'm done for the winter! The struggle is well worth it boys. Now to pick a destination, central America or s.e Asia. Hmmm....

I have a car with run down tires with pretty much no thread left and I had no problem in the winter.

I bought an AMA membership for 80$ year and they give you 5 free towings per year, so if I get stuck somewhere I'll just call them and they' tow me.

By stating that you "only want camp work" you're limiting yourself and not showing a great attitude, what you should be saying is "I'm willing to do anything I can get to make money, I'll shovel shit and don't care where I have to go to do it." Yes, camp jobs are available for unskilled labourers, but don't expect to just show up and find one, as one poster mentioned a few pages ago, you're hoping for the elusive unicorn that everyone else is looking for: big money and flights for an out-of-province, unskilled labourer, good luck with that.

Took me goddamn nearly 2 months to get re-licensed in Security and over $700 and now they are telling me $12.50/hr is pretty good but I've got to work on probation. Forklift re-certification cost me $500 and wages have dropped from $16/hr to about $13/hr. *Shake my fvkin head*

My brother is with a SUPER STEAMING HOT Alberta native. She has no college/degree/certifications and gets paid 60k/year to answer phones in an office. Owns a condo and car in Calgary. You guys must be pulling down huge money in fort mac.

I especially liked when he blamed global warming on dinosaur farts or the time he got wasted drunk and stopped by a homeless shelter in Edmonton and threw change at a homeless guy and told him to get a job, classic Ralph! Yes Stelmach and Redford were complete duds and the Progressive Conservative brand in Alberta is really hurting but I don't think that Danielle Smith and the Wild Rose party are the answer, not yet anyway. I have pretty high hopes for Jim Prentice, he seems qualified to get the job done but only time will tell.

I'm a member of the United Association, local 496 out of Calgary, most of the guys I work with are out of local 488 Edmonton, which is the busiest and biggest local in North America. Its a pretty good union and I've been encouraging guys to apply there since I started this thread, as far as I know only one guy has joined up and he's doing very well working as a plumber.

I'm gonna wait until I get in town to buy snow tires/winter gear. A lot of you guys told me to stick with all seasons, but where I'm from 2cm of snow is like the apocalypse, I've only ever driven in it once so spending a couple hundred bucks will give me good peace of mind.

I'm getting restless. This weekend is my last weekend of work. I feel like theres a lot I have to do, but none of it can really be done here (or doesn't need to be done now). I guess I should be booking a hotel/getting in touch with my buddies there, booking classes for my tickets, researching a trade I want to get into, or something along those lines, but I just want to leave, see the sights getting there, take a few days to get my tickets/the lay of the city then get whatever kind of work I can until I have a more concrete plan.

If I'm applying to/talking to companies should I leave out my degree from my resume? I'll be applying to science companies once I'm there, but if I'm going for a general labor position for the time being or even a trade later down the line will it help me or hurt me to mention it?

Dunno if you have this chain in Alberta but we have a sweet place for work wear here called Marks' Work Warehouse (or Wearhouse) anyway..
has the best selection of boots/shoes I've ever seen. A few years ago I discovered you could by decently fashionable sneakers with green triangles on them..

Anyway you asked about boots in the $200 range. I got a pair of Dakota HO3s for about $250 and they are fantastic. Really warm and comfortable and from what I can tell, highly durable.

I really figured driving a haul truck in Fort Mac would pay more than $35.00 an hour?

What do other Heavy Equipment Operators make? If anyone knows I'd appreciate it.

For general labor, don't list it. People will give you shit and become wary as to whether you can handle the work. Some HR mofo kept asking questions why I wanted to be a laborer when he wanted my previous HR job/pay.

For more skilled trades, list it. Especially since your degree is hard sciences based, it shows you're technically inclined.
