RE: The Texas Oil Boom
Be prepared to fight for pussy. The rigs have produced an army of good looking white boys that stand with sledgehammer fists. They bring home $4k every month to work 2 weeks every month. They can drop a mile line of powder to keep the bishes happy for at least one week, then drop off the map so the next swinging dick el mech can pay up. Looking like an Ecuadorian migrant worker doesn't cut it here. Move on. Make money first then...
All the big boys got together at The Petroleum Club and capped housing and pay. They run this town and it won't be lawless like Williston No shit. Lol @ anyone that claims to game there btw. I'm calling a casting call. Anyways, you can make $15 hr to pimp phones w/ OT and commission @ Verizon, so have at it. Rigs have no problem finding recruits and any fucktard can graduate from petroleum engineering and become the next swinging dick company man for $1k+ a day salary.
The sky's the limit though. Come out but be prepared to dig in or get fucked. I'll help if I can. When I sober up I'll give a quick lay report, but it ain't a fucking pretty site.
edit- I think the poster above me is a troll. How do I make them runnoft?

RE: The Texas Oil Boom
Getting laid here takes game. Problem is there is A LOT of money flowing which twists women up. Add the fact that most people aren't from here so you are running against experienced gamers. Houston game, Georgia game, midget Greek game, NYC game, Chi town game, ect. I keep hearing adjacent towns like Lubbock/San /Angelo are far better. With that being said......Midland/Odessa are only 15 minutes apart but are WORLDS apart. Midland is 'cosmopolitian' while Odessa is more blue collar. Neither are worth a fuck compared to El Paso.
Every nightlife venue I've been to in Midland has been a sausagefest, online game is dismal, and day game takes work. For real, if you see a cute chick working at Stripes and she's flirting, jump on it like there's no tomorrow. Cause if you don't someone else will. I've been laid bout a half dozen times and nothing to write home about. The work put in is not worth the ROI. Normally after I insert my penis into a chick they won't leave me alone. Here I fuck them like no tomorrow and don't hear back. Bottom line is they have too many options and dudes get the 'desert' mentality due to competition and desperation. Fuck it. I haven't had this much problems getting laid since I dressed up like Fisto for Halloween.
On the upswing, every trip to Odessa I have better luck, and girls are much easier to open. I will move there when the free rent runs out. In the meantime I'll be putting in the extra work like every other swinging dick.

In other news, I found a place that sucks more than Midland. It's called San Angelo.
No. San Angelo and Lubbock blow this place out of the water. Both have colleges and fewer oil jobs which means better ratios. With that being said the oil jobs that do exist in these towns are more 'concentrated'. Better quality employees if you will. Midland is a goat rope and they'll hire any idiot out here. COS is much lower in San Angelo/Lubbock. Trust me, you want to be there.

Besides that, yeah, I would say that Midnight Rodeo has the best girl/guy ratio. Though it's not very fun if you don't dance.
Rocking Rodeo is douchebag central. It's the nighttime version of 'The Bar' downtown. People go there to be seen and is about as useless as U Street in D.C.
Avoid.

This is the finest available if you wear skintight white pants.
I'm pulling $2500 a week right now. Not bad but can do better but the last week has consisted of working 1 day then sleeping and playing xbox the rest of the time.
Get as many cert's as you can. OSHA 30, HAZWOPR 8/40, First Responder, CDL w/ hazmat/tanker, ect and learn as much as you can about the overall process. This includes:
Upstream
Midstream
Downstream

How hydrocarbons are pulled from the ground

All parts of the drilling rig
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_com...lling_rigs
The general flow of rigs

Its all about who you know and how you know them to land the big paying jobs.Get involved in as much fraternal organizations as possible as networking is the best way to get hired. You'll have a better chance of showing up and knocking on doors dirty from work than being dressed up like a nancy boy. Go buy a Carhartt coat and some jeans that haven't been stored in the freezer. You'll get beat up if you don't.

I know they call MWD's movie watching dudes for a reason -- hence not working that much -- but my friend says that out of the 12 hr shift, the only real time spent working is ONE HOUR as long as there's no problems with tools. Can anyone working as a MWD validate this for me? I wanna believe him but I feel like he's exaggerating a lil bit.
I don't doubt it but I've never worked on an oil rig, I'm usually on the refining side of things although lately I've been working in an oil sands mine. I've been at this one site for five days now and have done absolutely nothing but watch movies, read books and shoot the shit with the guys all day, today we were chasing a coyote around in our trucks and throwing cookies at it. Trust me it gets boring and I wish work would pick up, it will in a couple of days, but until then its fucking around. Hurry up and wait as they say.
God damned them all, I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold, we'd fire no guns-shed no tears, now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier, the last of Barrett's privateers!

RE: The Texas Oil Boom
^^^ I've chased snakes across the road, almost wrecked dodging road runners, had one come within 5' of me today on the rig, raced trains, made swords out of cacti, spears from pvc and drill bits, instilled fear in each and every coworker, tried to convince the latter that they are gay, convinced most that I am, took pics of wild turkeys, talked to sheep, offered water color portraits of my semi-erect penis (to the sheep), showed up late, or showed up not ever that shift. All this was on the clock.

RE: The Texas Oil Boom
I have applied online for a grand total of 2(!) MWD trainee positions in Texas and was very upfront with being in Chicago and having zero oil & gas experience. Imagine my surprise when I checked my voicemail today and found that a guy from one of those companies called me and requested to talk further. I always interview well and don't have any skeletons hiding in the closet so now that I've gotten past the resume screen stage I'm pretty confident I can land this job.
Thing is, I don't know if it's a good move at this point. I am currently working in business & IT consulting and after all is said and done I'm saving roughly $3000 a month. My goal for the immediate future, that is the next few months, is to hit $XXXXX in my savings account and move back to China long term. In China, I want to try to continue with my professional career and/or start some kind of business.
Where do the oil fields come into play in all this? Well, when I return to Asia it will probably be with no job in hand. Getting a real job in Asia as a fairly recent college grand with only about 1 year of corporate experience may prove to be a stretch, so I have to be prepared for the eventuality of returning back to the US with my tail between my legs. If that happens, I have little confidence of being able to get another corporate gig quickly. On the other hand, from what I've read here in RVF, once you have some oil field experience and a skill, sliding in and out of jobs is quite easy. With that said, it would give me some piece of mind if before leaving for Asia I obtained experience as a MWD so in case of return stateside I could hit the ground running, financially speaking.
So with that long preface out of the way, here are my questions for you guys. First, how much could I realistically expect to make in the first 2-3 months as a MWD Trainee in Texas?
Second and more importantly, how long would I have to stick with it before quitting so that some time down the line I'd be more or less assured of being able to land another MWD job?
