All of this stuff is relevant, but it's more or less so depending on who's still got a connection to each event.

I do think this picture is egregious, but I also think that if people are going to make a big deal about it, then they should also make a big deal about all those other places of atrocity that people take selfies at, like the Aztec ruins. In addition, people don't really identify with it; in all honesty, how could they? The concept of animals versus humans or even humans versus humans in one-on-one combat is archaic to the point that most people won't even give it a second thought.

Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War even though it merely lasted a few days. A considerable number of people lost their lives yet many people merely see what once was a battlefield of death and decay as just farmland or rural countryside.

Both of these locations are somber but for different reasons. Unfortunately there are very few people in the younger generation that actually understand the reasoning. It's a damn shame.

The human race intentionally forgets some things.. as a healing mechanism, I believe. That said, we still work to evolve towards becoming a better creature.

We are, right now, at the crest of a wave.

Consciousness is defined as being able to strategize future scenarios. I believe we might need to have a better understanding of where we are coming from if we are going to avoid making the mistakes of the past.

Well, we do have the phrase of "Never again". There is also the phrase of "Always forgive but never forget." I feel as if these two phrases are consciously overlooked in order to defer to the advancement of the society. We look to become technologically superior each year but we lose another piece of our humanity with each passing phase.

We do evolve but I think it would behoove us to remember traumatic events if only as examples of the kinds of things to avoid and to prevent history from repeating itself. The phrase "History always repeats itself" exists solely for the fact that people don't learn from past mistakes. I can't see why the things you and I have mentioned would be any different, unfortunately.

This may be a horrible Christian perspective, but if I were a Jewish guy who chose not to fight for his beloved Germany but instead was rounded up and sent to a camp to die, there is nothing that would make me happier than seeing my grand daughter happily living in a world that finally respects the sovereignty of her people, and that I did not die in vain but instead was part of achieving a goal two millennia in the making.

Operation Overlord had nothing to do with the liberation of Jews in concentration camps. Several other kinds of people were also imprisoned as well. D-Day and the invasion of Omaha beach had to do with breaking up the Nazi stranglehold in France so the Allies could push further into Europe with the eventual goal of reaching Germany to prevent the Third Reich from taking over the entire world.

Don't use something like the D-Day landings and the associated Allied deaths as political fodder. That's just disrespectful to assume that it had anything to do with territorial acquisition or redemption.
