Alright, so these things were cheap in my local wholesale place (£2.50/melon) so I bought a crate of 8.

I was already aware via this forum that they do something to help blood flow- a fellow RVF'er suggested consuming them to improve your wood.

We've been munching these things during gym time. I wasn't sure whether I should be consuming so much sugar (ex keto, worried bout carb creep) so I googled. It turns out that they have a number of benefits, almost all of which will be of interest and use to Rooshers.

1. 92% water. Ideal gym snack.

2. Rich in lycopene- more than anything else, even tomatoes. This is an anti-oxidant that researchers believe could help combat cancer- most studies have focused upon tomato consumption (the 'Mediterranean diet') It gets better too; lycopene can help you obtain and keep a tan for longer.

4. Can help recovery after the gym. Watermelon and watermelon juice have been shown to reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery time following exercise in athletes. Researchers believe this is likely do to the amino acid L-citrulline contained in watermelon. I'm currently training every day and I feel a little sore in the evenings but fine the next day and can't wait to lift again. It's working for me.

Before I sign off, one more thing for those of you who are culinary minded. During my trawls of the web, I read somewhere that the rind contains the highest levels of L-citrulline. Apparently it's common to eat this in many parts of the world. So, I trimmed the skin off, diced it up and microwaved it in butter for a couple of minutes. It was fucking heavenly. Amazing, subtle taste with a hint of sweetness. The melon does something to the butter too- it seems to make it 'gel' up and stick to the chunks, rather than just become a liquid. I wholeheartedly recommend this, and won't ever throw the rind away again.

TL;DR- Watermelon is cheap, full of vitamins, protects against cancer, helps you tan, helps muscle recovery, aids your circulatory system and the rind makes a delicious vegetable.

During summer time, it is my habit to eat a ton of them. They are very refreshing, cheap and low in calories.

Smoothie time! It might make a good base for a shake- given how it seemed to interact with melted butter (gelling it up) then I'd be interested in the results of blending it with milk.

There must be more fibre in the rind also. I'd still trim the skin- pesticides etc.

Isn't the L-Citrulline only found in the shell? I take it as a supplement, works well for blood flow and wood.

Makes it sad that fresh fruit in the US is generally considered a higher level thing. In SE Asia I'll just walk around and get a bag of fresh cut watermelon for around $1 or a fresh shake for $1.50. In the US both would usually be priced way more than a Coke or Starbucks.

A coworker was talking about grilling watermelon slices on the BBQ. I guess you could do it. People grill pineapple and that's pretty damn good.

You guys ever had Portuguese rodizio? They served grilled pineapple slices at the end of the meal. Good stuff.

Watermelon juice is incredible. No additives, just remove the seeds and make juice from watermelons. Nectar of the gods.

Not true, this is the time of the year watermelon gets harvested in the south. It's pretty cheap in American grocery stores right now.

Indeed.

I would recommend blending your watermelon seeds and all though.

The seeds are high in protein, healthy fats, iron and so on, and give it a nice and thicker texture.

I like the taste but, being so huge and watery, it takes too much effort to prepare (cut into manageable chunks and/or clean the seeds) and eat, imo. I might give cooking the rind a try, though.

1. Cut in half.
2. Put one half in fridge
3. Take first half and cut a slice about two inches thick at the rind.
4. Rip into it like the man you are, leaving juice running through your beard and down your chin like you've just muffdived a squirter to end her two year dry spell.

I get what you're saying bro, it's messy. For us roughnecks, no bother. For those of you with an office job and a suit to keep clean it may be more hassle than it's worth.

I can't understand why anyone would try to clear the seeds. You don't notice them, they are delicious anyway and full of minerals.

It's easiest to cut it up, seeds and all, and put it in a blender. Add a few ice cubes, and the juice from half a lime if you like. Makes a refreshing pre and post workout drink.

I mentioned in the Arginine thread that a study found it beneficial for strength training, though it was unclear whether the citrulline or lycopene deserved the credit:

About time, growing up in Southern Vietnam's hot climate watermelon is my favourite fruit, tasty and cheap, always cool me off. I love it even more than rambutan and guava, avocado. I was pretty devastated in Japan where watermelons are expensive as fuck, if you worry about your shirt you can cut them like this:
