With American Girls, Every Day Is A Larry David Day
Curb Your Enthusiasm is a popular TV show starring Larry David, the creator of Seinfeld, with him getting into arguments with people. Larry David gets into fights and arguments constantly, because he isn't willing to conform, and is always ready to call people out for questionable or hypocritical behavior.

Daily life is a series of great injustices and hypocrisies minor and major, and everyone else is much too blind and brainwashed to notice otherwise.

I recently had my own Larry David moment.

A girl I knew is living in a home where her friend Maria used to live. Maria is from another country, let's say Mexico, but lives locally. The girl was collecting Maria's mail and bringing it to her.

I asked her why doesn't Maria just change her mailing address, and the girl says "ohh she's Mexican, she's just never gotten around to it." I said, you know, I don't think you're giving her enough credit - I'm pretty sure she's capable of changing her mailing address. "You don't understand. It just doesn't work like that in Mexico, things are different there." Neither Maria nor her mail are in Mexico - Maria has been living in the states for several years, and is a fully functioning human being.

I said, well if it were my house getting her mail, I'd warn her and then throw her mail out if she didn't do anything about it. This girl huffed, "well, not everyone is like you, Basil." Despite her being the one to make vaguely bigoted comments (Mexicans aren't capable of changing their mailing address), it's *me* who is the asshole.

Maybe she takes it as an attack on her friendship with Maria - I am trying to destroy her link to Maria by removing the need for her to bring Maria her mail.

Then I realized that I'm having encounters like these with American girls *every* *fucking* *day*. It's not even irritating any more, it's just a comical spectacle at this point, just as Larry David's show is. I have this out-of-body experience where I wonder, "is this seriously happening?" and laugh at the preposterousness of it all. I'm just like, what the fuck did I just hear? Does no one else notice? Does no one else call these chicks out for their silly ass bullshit? Am I the only one in the world left with a bullshit detector?

Curious to hear if others feel this way...

RE: With American Girls, Every Day Is A Larry David Day
Tonight I ended up at a museum that was open to the public for free. One of the exhibits had a long line. I was standing there by myself and this odd looking 20 something chick with short bangs, and her gay/androgynous BF/date, got in line right behind me. Little did they know the line extended over 100 ft behind me, with a few 100 people waiting. Of course being an art museum in a liberal city, no one called them out on it. Except for me. I told them the line started waaayyyy back there, as I waved my arm and pointed. They looked like deer in headlights as they continued to stand there, as if they didnt hear me. For a second I got angry that they didnt listen to me, for another I just chalk it up to people are assholes.

Fantastic show. When I was living abroad, I ended up buying every season on DVD. I can watch them over and over.

I can identify with Larry and your story a lot...nearly every day with some of the people I interact with at my job.

Another thing about having Larry David moments, is people either think your funny as hell, or a complete prick and the irony/wit goes way over their head.

I would argue that the problem is two fold when it comes to people annoying or inconveniencing others, and even though I like Larry David, his clips illustrate part of the problem when people act like this in real life.

The Larry David/Seinfeld types are the ones that need to over-analyze and get anal about everything, then complain about it to people who often don't care (strangers sitting in waiting room, their friends, family, etc.). There is no concept of stoicism with these folks, everyone else is just a sounding board for their negativity.

OR, even worse, they get angry and personal with those people that have no way of changing the policy/resolving the problem (i.e. many times people berate front line workers in places like fast food restaurants, or customer service reps, who most likely actually agree with them, but are powerless in the face of management's decisions).

While I enjoy the humour from time to time, men who act like that in real life often lose the respect of others, and just end up looking like beta babies (i.e. "the best policy is the one where I get what I want")

That said, WNB the chick in the 2nd clip, and I totally get why he would want that covered up.

RE: With American Girls, Every Day Is A Larry David Day
I have worked security at various bars for about a decade now. It blows my mind at the most common sense helpful shit American women will argue against. Shit there to protect them or the bar, but if they don't want to do it, they will melt down and throw a shit fit. Obviously alcohol makes them even worse, but it is just dumb founding.

Something as simple as putting on their shoes. The floor is full of broken glass. The bar rule is you have to wear shoes at all time. And every night you will see women running around without shoes on. And if you were to tell them they are breaking the rules of the bar and must put on their shoes or leave they would be willing to fight you tooth and nail to the bitter end to not have to put on their shoes. So often I explain that they have to put their shoes on because there is broken glass all over the floor and it is for their safety. Still that often doesn't work and they act like you don't exist.

So you then find their MALE friends and explain to them the situation and those poor guys have to explain to the dumb skanks that they have to put on their shoes.

As someone who goes barefoot all the time, the risks of broken glass is highly overrated and to an extent irrational. I can literally step on broken glass and if I step lightly I wont get cut. More likely, I look where I am going and dodge it... Or it is small enough that I will not feel it.

I understand liability and shielding yourself from getting sued but they are grown adults and being barefoot is pretty much not dangerous at all.

I would argue about it. Although I havent been to many bars, yesterday I got kicked out from one(I was in the city in the daytime, and was taking shelter from the rain) for not wearing shoes. I couldnt be arsed arguing so I just left. I know its easy for me to "just put some shoes on"(though its not standard for me to carry them) and some places just want to seem more fancy and have a dress code but it just is highly annoying and I would never really want to go back.

Ive never been kicked out of anywhere else(like shops or resteraunts or theme parks), and I would never do nightgame if its standard for bars to kick me out like that.

Maybe your feet are calloused enough to be able to protect themselves from broken glass. IDK. I do know this isn't true for normal people. I stepped on a tiny piece of glass a few years back. And I was not able to walk right for about 10 days. I can't imagine what a large piece of glass would do.

Bars where you live just let you come in barefoot?

Yeah, probably. But if chicks go into your bar without shoes, isnt it likely theyve been walking around a lot and their feet are calloused too?

Ouch, sorry for your injury.

Actually, Im both under 18(legal age for bars/clubs), and dont have much of a social life, so I dont go out to bars much. But I have never been denied to non bar places ever. I have only been denied to one bar, but I think at least three let me come in(when I was walking around the city during the day).

Not sure about nighttime, maybe they would have stricter rules then. Not looking forward to it. I would either have to walk around with shoes(tiring/difficult for me) or hunt for non elitist places. Do bars in general(at night) have strict dress codes and stuff(compared to other places)? If they dont then I dont think no shoes is a big deal compared to other parts of dress.

If you go barefoot a lot, yeah your feet will toughen up real nice.
I usually go barefoot when I can, I've stepped on metal slivers and glass and crap around my workshop, just pluck it out and keep on going.

edit; @cooledcannon, you can probably just get some tops, looks normal, doesnt constrict, and you're free to go barefoot.

Haha yeah, definitely. I can even jump off say, a 6 feet height onto concrete without a problem(except a bit of groundshock. But no cuts)

Tops? Can you explain? The only tops that I know are like shirts. But you might mean something different. I guess if you do mean that Im going to invest in some dress shirts(maybe for future work too)

Cooled cannon no bar in New Zealand worth going to (outside of a beach bar maybe) would serve you if you weren't wearing any footwear.

Guys, if he is giving the impression that walking around without shoes is any more common in NZ than in the US, it's not.

"No shirt, no shoes, no service." That was a common sign on convenience stores and gas stations in the US.

American girls (in most major cities) are like fruit that had the flavor (femininity, charm) sucked out of them. Shiny exterior, but once you take a bite you want to throw it out.

Yeah, I don't mean being like Larry David to the extent of having a personal tantrum - although others may have a tantrum when you call them out, as the anecdotes above indicate - but in the feeling of being alienated from society, by how girls operate on these bizarre rules and you are the only one who notices, while everyone else takes them as normal. I'm always saying things to girls that has most people reacting with, "You can't say that *to a woman!*"

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that. Being around someone who's being contrarian for the sake of it, can be annoying.

However someone pointing out inconsistencies and ridiculous things, regarding the way things "work" is a bit different.

I wouldn't say someone like George Carlin is a "beta baby."

I work for the government, and have a number of face-palm/Larry David moments on a weekly basis, which is probably the biggest reason why I can say I identify with him.
