Bump.

I do a lot of engineering and production on the side (only a few people can actually pay their bills with it these days). I thought I'd bump this thread up so we can find out which active users are involved in music production and engineer, and possibly we could shoot the shit regarding new gear coming out as well as techniques and ideas.

I'm entering Evergroove studio this month to take on full mixing credentials for a release as well as shared engineering and production credentials.

Most of my mixing is done at home and in the box (Pro Tools > Apogee Rosetta > Adam A7) so it will be nice to be around some hardware again. Here is a mix I did a while back... song was recorded at The Fray's private studio north of town. Wish I could have engineered and produced because there are a few things I would have done differently...





By the way, I'm about to hit the market for consoles between the $10k-$20k range. Let me know if there are any that I should look into. I'm especially interested in recapping a used one.

Unless you know someone in the industry, are debt free, and have $$$ to finance this you will starve. Mixx's advice is 100% solid.

I used to DJ college parties and made some decent cash off of that. Honestly, I would mix up about 6 hours of music with beat drops and all sorts of hooks. Then I would
stand up in the DJ box with my headphones and make it look like I was doing something.

The best part was macking on chicks who wanted to make "requests".

The NS10's are good monitors. It sucks that they are out of production. However, they are in most professional studios as a backup pair so there is some familiarity for contracted engineers. I tell all my buds that are getting into mixing that the two most important things in obtaining a good mix are a properly treated room and knowing how your monitors sound in that room.

For mixing I normally charge about $100 - 200. Which is about $25/hr for mixing which normally takes me no more than 4 hours. Mastering about $75.

Nothing polarises opinion more than the NS-10s with their mid-frequency dip that makes people compensate by doing a Fletcher-Munson curve, basically the happy smile that mimics human hearing.

I know great producers that swear by them, and I know crappy producers that swear by them. I know great producers that hate them, and I know crappy producers that hate them. Some say they are best paired with a Bryston amp, but good luck with finding that these days.

Their look alikes - the HS80Ms and 50s are nothing like the originals. Do not let the white cone fool you. The HS's are an overly bright monitor and fatiguing in the high range. But for its price - hard to beat. And they are LOUD. I have KRK 8" and some Tannoy 6", plus a cheap set of Logitech computer monitors that are a good reference too.

I've been in long and hard debates about these monitors for years, so forgive me if I don't want to tread that well worn road again. I'm happy to give advice though to people starting out, that don't know it all. I don't know that much either, but maybe a bit more than some.

Whatever fits.

I'm a pretty average audio engineer. I know my way around a parametric equaliser. I beta test stuff for developers (VST). I buy my software. I don't crack. Though I know the crackers too. Everything I use, I have paid for.

I'm really more of a producer than an engineer. I really respect the engineer's skill. I've been signed, had chart success, etc.. but don't want to big it up here too much. I was surprised at finding this thread, but thought I'd dive in anyway.

I've got a fairly modest studio now based around some vintage bits of kit. But high end software is where I'm at. I own about half a dozen DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations).

It goes without saying that I would be interested in working with any one talented from starting out to full on accomplished. I work mainly with Hip-Hop, Drum and Bass, Pop, Reggae (Dub), Electronica.

I'm UK based, but have contacts in Europe.

But who needs that anyway when we have email and websites with our stuff on, eh?

The music world is more brutal now than it has ever been. A lot of the younger kids don't realise the insanity they are letting themselves in for. But us older heads, know the 'game'. You need to be doing this for the right reasons.

As a rock producer/engineer, I shoot to get the sounds and takes I want in the studio so that is why I hardly ever bring out Drumagog (drum replacer) and Melodyne (pitch/time editor). I have Reason solely as a sound library in case I need to add any bells and whistles with samples during the mixdown process.

I hear ya.

They are very coloured. Lot of fun though. Bass end is kicking. But the upper mid range is over pronounced as well. Hard to find monitors in this price range that aren't. The Yamahas just give out too much high end. But I do know producers that take these considerations into the big picture and get a good sound.

Don't get we wrong. I try before I buy too. I just do actually buy the stuff when I end up using it. I'm not some kind of evangelist. But I can see where you are coming from, and I respect that. Kudos to you. Our palates are a little more limited, but we know our onions! Er..

Man, that is a pretty broad range.
I don't use Pro Tools at the moment, being out of the game and all. But still. I can see you got it going on!

I've got a few Waves plugins myself. I love their little monthly free for all where you get some plugs for silly money. They are a pain to install though and I am tending to go with them less and less.

It's good to see you using Reason, seeing as so many people slag it off. But there is no reason not to go with it as its Audio Engine has been updated since version 2.5 or something. They were only doing compression on the fly any way. It can still sound like shit. But, it can sound like Gold too. It's all about the funky music!

Let's not get too technical here.

Not sure, as I'm outside the States - it seems to be an old unit that has been constantly updated, so it depends on how old it really is. It can't be that difficult to put it into google and see what they go for now, new and s/h. Or phone up your friendly local music shop. If you're still into music they would probably be happy to part exchange it for you too.

There are also quite a few lively second hand market place forums on the net that favour the States. You could sell it in a day or two with a good price, I am sure.

The Yamaha HS suck. They sound like crap. I prefer to mix with headphones, and that really sucks. Thing is they overemphasize hi feqs too much, and IMO they have a very cheap sound. IMO they sound like some beats by dre headphones but bigger. They sound nothing like the ns10.

What DAWs do you use the most? I use PT10 to mix and track and FL for production. I'm saving so in a few months I'll try and buy Logic.

Good to know there's more people here interested in this stuff.

You should demo SoundToys Echo Boy. It is honestly the only delay plug-in you will ever need. I was going to recommend upgrading your reverb, but Logic comes with a pretty good convolution reverb.

KRKs are just good to get an alternative mix - kind of like how would this sound if this was in a club, except I am in my living room. Same way people do in mono on an Auratone to see what it would sound like on a crappy mono radio.

Higher end KRKs do the bizz though, so I am told. I got the cheaper ones. But 8" still. I figured that way at least I don't need a subwoofer. Truth be told. I would have been better off with the 6" speakers and the subwoofer - more definition - but more expensive. I did alright.

I love my Tannoy Reveals. They are just superb.

It's funny, in the UK everyone says the Yamaha's are better, because they cost more. Well I worked in a studio and we bought some brand new HS-80s and they were great, but too bright. We put in some KRKs and they were too boomy (well lower mid-range- confusing for mixing).

None of these are great monitors but they are better than nothing, then again if your room ain't treated they worth less than shit. Unless you know them, then, the more monitors you have to compare, the better.

Beats are shit. For mugs.

I probably use Studio One the most at the moment. It is kind of the best Logic/Cubase replacement seeing as it was coded by the guys that did the original Cubase. I don't use PT at all, though I did and I liked it and if I had the money I'd get a full rig. At least check out Studio One - I am 90 percent sure they do a Mac version. I am assuming you are on a Mac as Logic only works on a Mac so... Check it out - it's not for everyone, but for the money it is very very powerful, especially if you use external hardware with their 'Pipeline' feature.

I use Reaper quite a bit too. Very cheap. Again, I think they do a Mac version - 40 bucks or something. Real Swiss Army knife - does loads of stuff, even if it is a bit clunky in the main.

I like Flstudio a lot and use that for knocking up beats. I have bought a lot of their plugins too like Harmor and Harmless. I pretty much have bought everthying I want off them. Which is a lot. I don't crack, I pay for everything. I know the devs (not personally) and do skins for the GUIs on the synths too. It would be a bit rude to steal their software under their nose.

Yeah. It's great. Not really why I joined this forum, but it seems to be a good mix. And lots of Hip Hop dudes too (people laugh if I say dude in real life where I live). A nice mix of black and white, no bullshit. Pretty balanced. It's looking good so far.

Maybe we could all get together and do something outside the box.

I work alone. But it's fun to play with new people. I like to learn. And I like to teach those coming up.

I'm about connecting with anyone really that is serious and is doing it for the right reasons.

But before I get offed, check out MMultiBandDelay by MeldaProductions. You have like a 4 band frequency split to do individual delays on - multi-taps too - it is insane, and not very expensive.

I don't crack, I pay for everything. I know the devs (not personally) and do skins for the GUIs on the synths too. It would be a bit rude to steal their software under their nose.

Yeah. It's great. Not really why I joined this forum, but it seems to be a good mix. And lots of Hip Hop dudes too (people laugh if I say dude in real life where I live). A nice mix of black and white, no bullshit. Pretty balanced. It's looking good so far.

Maybe we could all get together and do something outside the box.

I work alone. But it's fun to play with new people. I like to learn. And I like to teach those coming up.

I'm about connecting with anyone really that is serious and is doing it for the right reasons.

It would be good! I like it better to work with new people . It brings ideas to the table that otherwise wouldn't be able to use. When I work alone I have only one perspective vs. when working with other people. There's more points of view.

Right now I'm going through a bad few months. I've been a bit depressed and thinking about quitting. But in reality I can't do it. I love it too much.

I may be down on my luck myself, or then again, I might be doing rather well for myself. It would be rude to brag.

Why don't you PM me with some of your thoughts and feelings and music too if you are feeling brave. If nothing else I will give constructive criticism. But that is the problem with forums like this, you don't realise you are talking to Pete Rock and you insult him. I bet your shit is ten times better than mine. But even if it is my brother, I got a plan. No ego where money is concerned.

I tell you what, why don't you hit me up with some of your music and I'll put it up or do something with it, and we will let the rest decide. No one else is listening. It will be fun. If we are shit, they can laugh their socks off at us, if we are not, then maybe they might like to get on board and just say 'that's ok'.
