Interesting article that seems to criticize the rampant amount of vocal fry among America's young women.

Of course minimal mention of how vocal fry turns off guys; guess soon enough we'll have the "vocal fry acceptance movement".

Vocal fry is try-hard cool.

On the opposite end of the spectrum.. I've noticed some Polish girls have put on this almost fake falsetto high voice that is really annoying. Sounds like Ms. Piggy.

In the constellation of female priorities, attracting men is at the bottom. For some, it's not even on the list - the idea that a woman would do anything to attract a man is downright repulsive to many women, because that would compromise their autonomy and endanger their "real self." But abasing yourself for your corporate master is highly encouraged - girls know society will pat them on the back for that.

Females (and males for that matter) have always had affected vocal tones. You can read in old novels where it is explicitly criticised, and probably in Juvenal's Satires for that matter. In Japan there are a variety of ridiculous drawls in different subcultures. But usually the women are trying to be overly feminine - it's in the good old USA where the gist of the affectation seems to be to project bored superiority.

I don't think an obnoxious female accent is idiosyncratic to American girls.

It may seem more poignant to us since most of us are Americans whose primary language is English.

For example, once in awhile, I bust out impersonations of the Taiwanese girl accent at work--to the delight of my female Chinese colleagues.

The stereotypical Taiwanese girl accent conveys much of the same sentiment as the stereotypical American girl accent--boredom, entitlement, superiority.
