This is one thing I can't travel without, earplugs. Without these I can't go to clubs at all, in South America clubs and a lot of bars are way too loud, I don't know how people put up with it.

I've bought a custom pair from these guys: http://www.acscustom.com/uk/ they're expensive at close to £200 with the custom fitting but worth it.

First off they protect your hearing so no waking up the next day with your ears ringing but secondly they actually make clubs easier.
With custom earplugs they filter the noise so you can still enjoy the music and it's a lot easier to hear what people are saying so it makes it easier to talk to people - it basically turns a club into a bar.

At first I was a little self conscious to wear them but they're quite discreet and I've had so few people comment on them that it's really a none issue, if you're in a club or concert you will usual notice that the dj or performer will be wearing a pair of these.

The only real downside is that when you speak you will have some occlusion, if you've ever worn cheap earplugs you know what this is but again in a loud nightclub you can hardly even hear yourself speak so again it's not a big deal.

As to getting really drunk and losing them this is a possibility but they can't fall out due to the way they twist in so it's unlikely.

Earplugs are a must for traveling. There is always somebody at the hostel who has to make a 4am bus and they never try to be quiet when they're packing their bags. I've been using some throwaway earplugs but I'll have to get a pair of those custom fit ones.

These aren't as useful as cheap ones for sleeping because they filter the noise rather than block it. I still use cheap foam earlplugs when I want to block sound for sleeping/bus ride etc.

Cool I figured you can probably pick them up cheaper although it does seem, from my research at least, that there are a few well recognized brands that are market leaders so I'm not sure how some cheaper ones will compare?

Haha that's a world away from some custom earplugs, firstly you have two little stalks sticking out of your ears and secondly the sound quality will never be as good as with custom earplugs.

I've used similar earplugs to the link you provided - the difference is night and day.

Do you actually use these for going out in clubs etc? In ear monitors are basically for performers so it's not for the same purpose. Unless you're up on the stage playing it would be total overkill to buy these.

I use them for everything, including flying on planes and just listening to my iphone music. They are perfect. You can buy just the plugs just for going to clubs and concerts as they sell those too.

However, I get a lot of conversations going when I have my monitors on as girls ALWAYS ask me curiously about them when they see them in my ears - they look pretty cool. I usually just tell them I just got off stage (if at a concert/nightclub) and forgot to take them off.

I like the Bose Q3 QuietComfort earphones that produce counter-noise to cancel out any external noise. At >$300 however they are mostly for the business traveller.
