I should probably update this.

Most of the closest beaches here are all private. You have to pay a "resort" to swim, but you're right -- most of them aren't anything special.

There are definitely a couple really nice ones, but the average Filipino is just hitting up something pretty simple.

This was just a little confusing to me coming from the US where you can't typically own the beach itself.

Upper class is based on your earnings.

Actors in the US generally aren't part of the social elite either, but that doesn't mean they're not upper class when they're making more than 99%+ of the people in the country.

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of Filipino culture, but that's simply what the word means and the way I was using it.

One would think, but not quite true. If you look at the top 500 individual tax payers, less than 50 are actors/actresses (excluding celebs). Of those that make the list, most come from old money or political ties like Kris Aquino. Very few would have a high enough income to make the list based on their profession alone. Ann Curtis is one actress who truly made it on her own. For actresses. the majority of their income comes from endorsements/ads, not from the acting gig. Hence, a number of celebrities moonlight as escorts.

My only point is that there is a strata in society where if you do not have the right lineage, politics, background, and profession - your gene pool will never be accepted in that circle.

This list is a joke. People have much higher income and assets, but manage these in an efficient way so not to trigger official tax.

Don't kid yourself, there are a lot of people with a lot of cash in manila, going out mostly to private parties at peoples houses or at the big hotels. Just hang out at the shang on a weekend night check out the ongoings in the ballrooms..

Nope. That's a specifically American view of what class means.

Take Britain for example, class depends on your accent, your school, your family connections. The upper class "gentleman" of good family who is third cousin to a duke but is as poor as a church mouse is a literary stereotype and still something that exists. Likewise upstart new money can still be shut out of certain high society circles. Even in Australia I know millionaire businessmen who can't get into the right cricket club and they are not happy about it.

In the context of the Philippines, I'm not an expert, but it is an oligarchy famously said to be owned by 30 families. I'm guessing the true upper class are members of these families.

Yeah, spot on. Each country is it's own little world; dynamics or expectations from one don't necessarily apply to another. "Old money" circles in the UK are very inaccessible to most nouveau riche. All the money in the world couldn't buy you in if you don't tick the boxes.

Have definitely heard about this in Asia too, e.g. the true Thai "HiSo" circles that are essentially extended royal family only.

I agree with your observation of new money vs old money. But upper class is upper class. Doesn't matter if its old or new. Now if we are talking aristocracy sure. I'm just using the definition from the governments mouth. You can live like a king for 4000 a month.

In economic terms you're bang on. But in this context it does matter, because the two groups are different and dont mingle with each other. They each have their own dynamics and behavioural norms. Since the post is about mingling with these people, it does matter which group we're actually referring to. The govt isn't making distinctions between different groups of socialites, it's just taking an economic view which throws them all in together.

I understand that "upper class" doesn't necessarily refer to the social elite, and I'm sure he does to.

Why people are trying to argue with me about using my own language is really puzzling to me. It's like me going to Australia and interrupting someone's conversation, "No, a barbie is a doll. You're wrong".

According to you all, the upper class is among the .01% of earners, and don't go out in public or get photographed.

I remember my Minneapolis girlfriend was picked up by a guy in a limousine once, and she was laughing about hanging out with him.

He told her "I'm the garbage king." He was an owner of a very successful garbage company.

I told her I was jealous of her hanging around with rich guys. ( I was beta then.)

She genuinely laughed and couldn't understand why.

"But he was the Garbage King," she told me as if it removed any reason for jealousy.

Hey OP, great post and thank you for the intel.

I hear all the stories of guys swooping in the Philippines and banging a handful+++ of average Philippines girls. Most likely in the 6 and under range. While I am not knocking that at this point i prefer and desire quality over quantity.

Yes I still want to travel the world and bang a lot of women. But some men eventually get to a level of success where the game requires quality to keep growing.

Literally every girl has said something along these lines and in most cases, these weren't wealthy girls nor gold diggers. I lived by the beach in the US for years and even the rich kids weren't hitting resorts with any regularity. Going to the beach was swimming and laying on a towel. Maybe a cooler and a radio.

I actually think some of the beaches are owned in some way by the resort and you have to pay to swim there but I'm not 100% on this yet.

Resort can have a different meaning in other parts of the world, americans mean a big hotel complex with many amenities when they say resort, others might mean just a seaside city or place thats used mostly for tourism
