I was born in Edmonton but I grew up in Arizona, so Edmonton is the only Canadian city I know of with a good amount of familiarity. I don't really find it as bad as some have inquired about. Like Scotian said, north of Grant MacEwan is pretty crappy. I think the worst part is the homeless natives that wander around these areas all fucked up.

But compared to the Phoenix Metropolitan area, I wouldn't deem Edmonton a dangerous place. The city is also full of neighborhoods lined with big beautiful fully matured trees lining the streets, and the North Saskatchewan flowing right by down town and the surrounding parks is also a nice view.

I just realized, I posted this same comment in this thread already. Apologies. Big Grin

What is your opinion of security and the police in Edmonton?

Can't navigate in Millwoods I meant*

The rest of Edmonton is great, Gotta love the grid system.

Well, I don't actually live in Edmonton. I'm in a rural area closer to Leduc and Nisku. In my case, I can go weeks if not months without even seeing RCMP! But when they are needed, they seem to show up out of nowhere in just a few minutes. I can't speak for the Edmonton police since I've been fortunate enough not to have any reason to deal with them.

As far as Canadian cities go, Edmonton is one of the more dangerous ones and its mostly due to all of us oil trash coming into town and getting wasted on our days off and a pretty big homeless population, which is due to all of the people moving here from all over the country and a big population of natives coming into the city from northern reserves. The ethnic gang problem is blown completely out of proportion and is mostly just for headlines in the papers. The Somalians all kill each other off so if you don't deal with them you'll be fine, same goes for the rest of them.

Basically, Edmonton is a safe community and you don't have to worry much unless you're out buying crack or walking around alone and drunk after 2am.

Itching to get back to the rig. Giving the office a call in the morning to see what they have to say. Hopefully be back to it shortly. Supposedly things start back up after May 24 weekend.

I try to avoid driving on Whyte ave in the summer. Don't know how many times I've almost rear ended someone or blitzed through a red light because I was too busy concentrating on all the tna on the sidewalk!

Man I'm just driving a crew truck at the moment but it sounds like the guys in charge want me to become an operator. I know some bus company was looking for drivers in Fort Mac maybe you can look into that.

Guys I'm still an advocate for the trades I'm just saying if you're eager to get out here and work right away, there is opportunity.

This past weekend, I went to Black Dog with a couple of buddies, and after about an hour of pure trolling, I successfully convinced a late 30's woman that I am 43 years old. Why? Partly for bragging rights, but mostly because I wanted her and her friend to leave the table.

Don't see how that would work? Me neither.

My name is Albertron, and I'm an alcoholic.

Wtf are you doing to me, Alberta....

^^trolling broads on the ave and other bars is one of those activities I'll never tire of.

Then again I troll myself some mornings after.... Then, I have a ceasar.
scotian 路 2014-05-22 19:31:00 路 #2639
I'll be down in Etown in a few days and we can troll some bars on the ave, any of you guys down for an RVF meet up next Tuesday or Wednesday?

Leaving town for 2 weeks for work tuesday morning, you going to be here monday?

The industry is cyclical and based on prices. Right now oil is $100+ and will be for the foreseeable future, so this year should be plenty busy.
TheFinalEpic 路 2014-05-23 23:36:00 路 #2645
Especially when gas rose 10 cents yesterday!

I'm Edmonton born and raised, hardly proud of it, but I might as well join the conversation. Scotian was telling me he was going to set up a meet up at the beginning of June, I figure that'd be awesome to meet some of you guys.
scotian 路 2014-05-24 01:57:00 路 #2646
Something fucked up, which is normal in the patch, so I may not make it to Etown mid next week, I'll keep you guys posted when I'm 63 south bound!

Trolling/challenging dudes also seems to be one of the things I'll never tire of. Betas/white knights really bug the shit outta me.

Just last week, out with some buddies up on a patio, a cute Dutch brunette approached us. Yes, we got approached. Happens more than usual in Edmonton, in my experience. I immediately take point and she reciprocates very well. My buddies are wingman'ing and occasionally chime in while letting me do work. Got this in the fucking bag, I'm thinking, as the interaction goes on. I look over her shoulder and see a few dudes that she took a group picture with earlier.

"You out with those guys?" I ask.
"Yeah they're my friends," she replies.

"Which one is your boyfriend?"
"Neither of them." She chuckles since she fully understood the intent of that question.

"Holy shit, automatically friendzoned them and they don't even know it. Fucking right!" I give off a flirty smile and nod with approval.

She bursts out laughing.

Meanwhile, one of the guys there overhears our conversation, comes over while I'm talking and wraps her arm right around her while looking right at me. Classic white knight move. Challenge accepted.

"Hey, we're gonna be bouncing to another bar soon, so let's get going," he tells her.

You kidding me, I thought. So I pounce:

"Oh my bad, this your boyfriend?" I ask, feigning my considerate nature for both parties in front of me.

She immediately replies with "No."

Friendzone status: confirmed. He even unwrapped his arm around her and stepped back a bit, clearly humiliated.

"So why not stay with us? You're having fun right? We're gonna be here for a bit anyway since the music is awesome here, then we'll all bounce somewhere together later on"

She's slightly hesitant. I can tell she doesn't wanna ditch her beta friend but it was clear she was very engaged in our interaction.

"Umm well I gotta go to the bathroom and I'll just get another drink. I'll be back!" She slowly walks off, leaving myself, the buddies and the white knight.

He attempts to be nice and introduces himself. I give him a fake name because fuck you.

I've learned (the easy and hard way) that being an asshole to a broad's beta orbiter does not pan out well since his reflection of you will be shared with the broad, making you the bad guy and destroying any chances of bang bang bang.

But I couldn't help myself.

"So are you trying to fuck her, or date her, or what? You're wrapping your arms around her as though she's your girl but she's saying otherwise."

*dude softly chuckles*
"Haha, nah man. She's just a friend of mine. She's actually a really good wingwoman. She's gotten me laid so many times! She's really cool like that, man"

I feign a smile, and look around on the ground. Wtf? Did someone drop a turd? Oh no, wait. That's bullshit, I smell. I was so disturbed by the stench that after he said that, I stopped listening to his shit afterwards. He was trying to redeem himself after I called him out on his weak positioning on this girl. It was clear as day that he didn't understand what a wingman is. Even more clear that he didn't understand his own white knight tendencies. He shrunk right in front of my eyes and based on his demeanour post-call out, I'm sure he knew it too.

The broad comes back and the white knight is back at it, persistent with asking her to bounce to a next spot. At this point, if I continue to challenge then I know I will lose. I really didn't give a fuck since cute broads are a dime a dozen here so I step back. My buddy recognizes this and pulls a brilliant move by asking her to put her number in my phone and saying that when we leave, we'll call her and see where they're at. She agrees enthusiastically. All this is happening in front of the white knight.

The euphoria I felt afterwards was not from acquiring those digits, but proving to that guy that he's a fucking loser. I'm fucked up like that. Thanks Obama, err... Thanks Harper.

Then I proceeded to get loaded and cockblock the shit out of my blue balls.

Morals of the story: pride will get you killed, and drink in moderation.

I don't know why the fuck I even bother going out in Fort McMurray, I guess its partly to blow off steam and also the fact that I'm a hard drinking piss tank, but every time I go out I end up regretting it. Case in point: last night, went to the local boozer (East Village Pub in Timberlea), rolled solo but wasn't in there for 20 seconds before I was recognized and sat at a table. Had a few drinks with a buddy from back home then went outside for a dart, when I came back in, said buddy was shooting pool, so I sat down with a group of 4 girls at the table I just left.

I opened them with "so do you know my buddy?" turns out that they didn't but I managed to unglue them from their Iphones and kept the conversation going with the two who were sat closest to me, turns out that one of them was keen and we were hitting it off: she got closer to me (moved over a chair, "its loud in here I can't hear you") and laughed at my cheesy observations about Fort McMurray. At about two minutes into our interaction, her friend, who was quite a bit hotter, summoned her to go to the bathroom, to which she complied. So there I was, sat with her unattractive (fat Newfie), but nice enough friend, so I kept the conversation going.

After a couple of minutes, the two girls returned and the one I was chatting up sat awkwardly across the table next to her friend, sharing a chair with her while there were two available next to me, where she was sat before. Instead of trying to reengage her, I excused myself and went to the pool table to hang out with my buddy, I really don't have the patience to deal with this shit. My guess is that her hot friend was jealous or something that her friend was getting male attention, while she wasn't.

Moral of this story is that if you guys decide to work half the year and fuck off to third world shit holes with friendlier like me, be prepared to the culture shock/reintegration that I'm going through now. Fuck it, I'm buying a new fishing rod ASAP, the walleye are running up here this time of year anyway.

I've noticed that the girls are becoming a little harder to game since moving here. When I first got to Edmonton, I would smile at a girl walking on the street and she'd stop and say hello.

Nowadays, not so much. Since I'm only in town after long stretches of being in the middle of nowhere I think the subtle changes in female behaviour stand out more. Less eye contact, less smiles and less friendliness overall. Then again, working out of town so much has killed any remnants of game I once had. So that must contribute to it as well.

Could also be the influx of all you pua fucks asking about nearby pet shops that's jaded all these fine females haha
