Any advice on a young college student entering a welding program next fall? My plan is to get an associates degree in welding technologies(thats what my school's programs is called) and hopefully get some apprenticeships along the way. Hoping to find my way in the oil sands in a couple of years to secure my financial future and then try to find any welding jobs that let me travel to different places.

Final plans are being made to head up to Fort McMurray (from Calgary via Vancouver). Gonna look for a Construction job. Looking get up there and walk into any office and take the first job I get. I am CSO construction safety officer.

Then move up from there.

Questions for the veterans on this forum reading:
Is it still prime hiring season for construction companies?
If anyone has any company names could you please tell me?
Does anybody have any leads on any rooms for rent?

Im between a rock and a hard place in Hammertown . On Monday Im looking to hopping on the hound to ETown . Ill have about 250$ when I get there. I know its crazy , I would have loved to save that 3k . There is no momentum here ,its all inertia. Unless I get my ass out there , I stay here Ill just be pipe dreaming . Any pointers aside from grabbing a hostel? health card? etc. The plan is just work whichever job that pays minimum 15$ hr . I will then work on the papers ,H2O,Staying Alive , and such . I hope to have a weeks pay in to grab a room. Appreciate all your input , prayers and good wishes =)

Best bet is to hit a shelter and agency as soon as you get into town with that kind of money. Some agency's (Diversified) provide rides to the site and will have all the ppe and take it off your first cheque. Good luck.

Yeah, lots of landscaping, construction, concrete jobs etc so shouldn't be hard, I found a job the first day I got to calgary.

Now that's what I love to here !

That posting requires a damage deposit; but if you search, you can find rentals for 150-200 per week. If you don't end up going to a shelter, that would be one of the only options I see besides the hostel (which could be a lot more expensive.)

One recommendation would be even if you have a dream right now of $15 per/hr being the easiest thing in the world to obtain, you might not find it in the first day or two. I would say accept ANY job, even 11 an hour. You need money to get started, $300 is fuck all. You really aren't in the position to be picky at all, good luck bro. I suggest to go and buy a tent and set it up close to the North Saskatchewan river. I have seen some hobos there, so they might give you other useful tips. You can freeride the Internet in the library by the Churchill sq. Speaking of transportation, buy 10 tickets (24 bucks I believe) and try showing drivers the old ones. Cops are only on LRT, so don't do that there.

Otherwise, I would go to the northwestern part of the city to get a job. Door by door. A lot of industry is there and you surely will find 15 dollars an hour job. Moving companies are probably starting hiring people, too. They pay 15-18/hr (e.g. AMJ Campbell), depending on experience and what you demand. Always demand the most they offer and don't forget to tune your resume.

You can get 11 an hour everywhere. McDonald's is always hiring. I'm not suggesting to be picky, but rather to look for a job for at least couple of days than going directly to fast food chains or groceries.

It's been a bit slow in my trade so I've been looking at other areas. About a week ago, I applied online to United Safety as a safety watch. They called me the next day to come on Monday for an orientation session in Fort Saskatechewan. I went there and was pleased with what I saw. They just called me telling me that I'm starting training on Monday there.

It's a great company. Good pay and easy work relatively speaking. Plus they have operations worldwide notably in Rio de Janeiro. Getting transferred to Rio within 2-3 years would be fantastic and totally my target given that I do speak Portuguese.

Fort Sask is about 40kms outside of Edmonton in AB. Its about $1500-1600/week or about 6k/month. Not bad at all till you either find something better or move up the ranks to get the big juicy contracts overseas while making well over 6 fig. Which is totally achievable within 3-4 years.

Apply for it man, you never know they may call you and if they do, you better be on the next flight to YEG!

How much are they paying you? Are there lots of vacancies for people who are qualified in safety? I have a masters degree in health and safety and one year experience.

Then you should definitely apply! All the info is on the link I provided. If you have experience and a masters then so much better!

For oil jobs in Brasil, unless you already have a Brasilian work permit, which is next to impossible to obtain for foreigners unless you're a reknown world class expert in your field, then your only shot at working in Brasil legally is to go through an international company and get transferred there. United Safety has operations in Brasil so check their Brasilian site. But best thing is to contact them and see what they have to say.

Good to see you're back out here and having success VP. I was worried for a while there with the break-up and everything but I'm back to work again! Not sure how long... 14-28 days. We'll see!

The job post says "Potential to earn $1600.00 per week with no experience required". Hopefully it's not a bait and switch type gig VP. Sounds a bit like one of those sales and marketing job ads "Earn $200 a day from home!"

I guess the potential comment is to do with the variable being how busy you are meaning how many hours you, specially as a newbie. Once you prove you're not a druggie, alcoholic or other redneck, then you will be very busy, working non stop.

This whole winter, I've been working close to 70 hr weeks. Other than the mini vacation I took to Coachella, I can count on my hands how many days off I've had since October.

Obviously, the money is great. My psyche, though, has taken a beating from all the hours of work. Noticed this when I was up at Coachella. Didn't help that I was high on many substances though, it actually made it worse, haha.

Anyway, sometimes I pass through this thread to see what's up. Most of you guys asking questions really gotta stop being fucking lazy and at the very least, read this thread from page 1. From page 55-ish onwards, it's the same questions and information cycling through again and again. No wonder the "veterans" are not responding here anymore.

There are two reasons why people can't find a job here. It's either because they're lazy, or they're retarded.

So, since Alberta is the fastest growing province in Canada (for obvious reasons), you can try this:

Grow a fucking pair, and make the move to Alberta.

You guys are looking to be fed with a silver spoon. If that's the case, then you're probably not ready for the oil patch. The information you need is here but it is impossible to account for every single variable, i.e. type of person you are, hiring seasons PER industry, type of people you may meet, etc.

Safety Watch is the most boring thing you'll ever do in your life. Sit around for 12 hours and watch another guy work. Can't go on your phone. I had to do it for 30 minutes last week and that was horrible.

Ya the manwatch guys at my gig is united safety. Guys look bored out of their mind. Could be a good stepping stone as the top safety guys make good money although they are heavily disliked buy some people

I scanned a lot of the posts and will answer my own question: based on the flags of posters it looks like guys are mostly from Canada and Europe. You would think NAFTA would make it easier for US citizens but I guess that's not the case.
