It would be a mistake to try and approach this through the lens of any actual political discussion on Israel. This girl is a spoiled, narcissistic child who is having a breakdown because someone dared challenge her world view and not give her what she demanded. That's it. Full stop.

College students, and college students who get involved with political activities in particular, are always emotional wrecks who don't have enough real world experience to make a case for themselves without sounding like ideologues/wing-nuts.

J R's right. One should separate her behavior from whatever cause she's fighting for, mainly because college students are (generally) at their infancy when it comes to political/real-world understanding.

Divestment from Israel has been a hot topic on many campuses across California for quite some time, and it stems from the fact that our current way to support or fight a cause can have the most impact when we do it economically. If you don't support the behaviors of a country, why would you support it economically? Our country does it with sanctions, and large organizations can do it with investment or divestment.

You criticize a woman (or in her case an asian woman to boot) for her over-the-top, unprofessional and frankly immature reaction to a democratic vote and you must secretly be harbouring a subconcious hatred for both women and asians. Hence you are committing "microaggression" against her gender and race.

^^^ I agree. Look at Harvey Weinstein and other media moguls like him. I have campaigned for candidates and made it a specific effort to reach out to Jewish people and convince the to stop voting for people that hate them. I've had mixed results. I can understandthe existence of people like Rahm Emanuel and his brother and their politics. But why American Jewish people vote for liberals vexes me. Jewish people have to start to understand that right wing Bible believing fundamentalists are their best friends right now.

There was a peace agreement brokered by Clinton in the 90's that would have give Palestinians half of Jerusalem and Arafat turned it down. The problem in the Middle aEast isn't Israel it is other Muslims. Look what's going on in Syria. I guess that's the Jews fault too. Look at the murderers in Afghanistan and Libya. That is why I put this video up. From a neutral standpoint, putting aside the Israel/anti-Israel discussion, this is an example of how unattractive grown women can be when they are stunted emotionally and mentally.

You can't hear a damned word she says because her emotions have so overruled her speech that she is just blubbering. That is an instant turnoff to her as a woman, and her argument as an intelligent being. If she was composed, measured, and articulate, I would be more inclined to listen to her. But not when she acts like an infant and shames herself in public.

Now that I think about it, if you want to spread your message (however cancerous it may be) there is no better way than to get a teaching job, and become famous for being an easy grader so that non-critical students will all line up to take your classes (and be indoctrinated).

The ironic thing about UCLA is that it doesn't use affirmative action in admissions since public schools in California are banned from doing so as a result of Prop 209.

Funny to reconcile that with its highly liberal student body.

My only issue with Israel is that my tax dollars continue to subsidize their existence despite the fact that they've got enough money to maintain armies of conquest and occupation. If you can send your military into outside territories, you don't need handouts.

As far as their treatment of palestinians, I give not one fuck about that issue. If they want to wipe the palestinians off the face of the Earth, by all means, go for it. But again, don't ask me to pay for it. And don't tell me you're the victim as you're killing them.

The Romans called the terrtorries east and west of the Jordan River Palestine. That includes modern day Jordan. Why are we not arguing that the Jordan govt provide territory for a Palestine

Biblical theology is the thread that weaves this whole tapestry together. Left vs. right, conservative vs. liberal, even capitalist vs. communist. Marxists blamed Christianity for there not being a workers revolt during WWI and the theology then had to move to destroy it. They're still trying to this day and it's working. Red pill to me isn't about just banging chicks. It's blowback against the cultural norms that have been torn down and re defined as a result of the over arching war between good and evil.

The US only started providing significant aid to Egypt after Sadat broke with the rest of the Arab world through his agreements with Israel, and the aid is very much being questioned now that Egyptian politics is less cordial with Israel than it was under Mubarak.

You're talking about the province of "Syria Palaestina". However, the name Palestine for the region long predates this: Herodotus mentions "Palaistine" as a district of Syria about 500 years before the events you mention.

College liberalism doesn't have much to do with race in California. California is a fairly liberal state by American standards, so public college students leaning towards the liberal side in California, even without affirmative action, is no big surprise.

Yeah. This thread shouldn't be about Israel. JR's post is exactly right. But perhaps I have some insights on it worth sharing.

I've been to both Israel and Palestine. Personally, something about Israel feels impermanent to me. I think Jews, Muslims and Christians will always live there (they all still live there now) but the place won't exist as a "Jewish state" under sole Jewish control forever. That region and its people are just too dynamic and have changed continuously throughout history.

Zionism is a relatively recent historical experiment that began in the late 19th century (it didn't exist for centuries) and had come close to failing many times throughout Israel's history as a nation, and even before then. There was even a plan at one point to create Israel in modern day Uganda. So this notion that the Middle East in particular is the rightful homeland for the Jewish people is just nationalist propaganda. In fact, the central thesis of Zionism is currently being undermined by the fact that Jews are far safer in Europe and America today than they are in Israel. All of the stats prove this. Many Israelis are even moving to Germany of all places in droves, Berlin in particular. Think about that.

Israelis will be the first to tell you how close the country was to the brink of collapse, particularly in its first few decades as a nation when it experienced a relentless series of wars with its neighbors. Only careless and completely avoidable tactical blunders committed by its enemies, and Israel's quickness in responding to take advantage, spared the nation its existence.

Also, American backing didn't evolve until relatively later in the country's history. America didn't support Israel with money or weapons during its first several wars with the Arabs. Neither did most European countries. There was one early war in particular where European countries refused to allow Israeli planes to use its airports for refueling. It wasn't until the Soviet Union became more involved in the region that the US and Israel relationship began to develop in earnest. The Soviets had close relations with many of Israel's enemy (Arab) states, so, naturally, the Americans supported Israel. There are some good books that talk about this.

Who would have ever thought that during the time of the Romans that Rome's grip on the Levant would ever be relinquished? That was simply inconceivable as Rome was the greatest civilization the world had ever known at that time. Yet it still crumbled...

The concept of nation states as we understand them today is fairly recent in world history. I don't think it's a concept that will continue to exist as we understand it forever. The nations of the modern Middle East are the result of a series of gentlemen's agreements between France and Britain around the turn of the previous century. There was no regard for the fragility of the diverse ethnic and religious groups that made up the societies in those newly created countries. People who never had power, suddenly had power over populations many times larger, all for th benefit of the colonial masters. The legacy of these decisions still play out, and will ultimately prove - and are proving - untenable.

Demographics and geopolitics will change rapidly in the coming years and compromises will be made.

In fact, the two sides are not far apart at all in terms of specifics for negotiating a deal. Solutions for the most contentious issues have more or less been carved out. It's now a matter of political will to get a deal through. It may not happen with the current generation of leaders as they are relics of an era rife with wounds and revenge, but there's also many forces on both sides that are taking into consideration the changing dynamics that I referred to, which complicates reaching an agreement.

Also, many Israelis are simply fatigued from living in a military state and want a first world lifestyle of the kind in Europe and the US. There's a fairly considerable brain drain that sees some of Israel's best and brightest leave every year for a better life in Europe and the US.

To their credit, they've done a lot of good to the land, which all of the empires before it neglected. Israel was initially a dry and dusty desert, but is now a world leader in irrigation, technology and farming, etc. The infrastructure is quite good by regional standards.

The truth is this is not a "conflict that has existed for centuries." The idea of Palestinian nationalism, like Zionism, is very recent historically, originating in the late 19th century towards the final stages of Ottoman (Turkish) rule. That's when Arab nationalism as a whole really began. Arabs have also been a nomadic people for most of their history. Relatively very few modern day Palestinians have roots in the lands of present-day Israel for more than a few generations.

All of the Arab countries in the region have their own unique interests with many adversarial positions against each other and the Palestinians. Hell, even within individual Arab countries you have a lot of conflict that will again reshape the borders in the coming years. Expect entirely new nation states as well.

I think this Caspian Report on the issue is generally accurate if you want a succinct overview of the "conflict." You'll see it's really a story about Arab disunity that stems from colonial history and Israel taking advantage of it.
