RE: Olympic Hockey
^^^

I'm watching the game too but leaving now as it's difficult to watch women's hockey really. It's not as bad as women's basketball but it kinda sucks and pales in comparison to the faster paced and harder hitting men's version. I guess we all get caught up in the Olympics but honestly I was having a hard time not getting bored watching the game....mabye it's just me...

Also hear you on cheering on US women (or Canadian). About the last thing we need is another bunch of bs about how 'heroic' the women's hockey players are...

RE: Olympic Hockey
womens hockey is hilarious, the most routine plays are coughed up and turned into glorious chances. Cant believe this comeback, shutdown all game and Americans playing stifling defense, Canada gets the lucky bounce then just a nice finish by Poulin. Only fitting that the 2 teams that dont royally suck go in to extra time. Like watching kids play out there but it does make for fun moments.

HORRIBLE call on the US women in overtime leads to the game winner for Canada. Girl pokes her stick at the goalie's pads looking for a rebound.....and that's slashing?

Terrible call, I thought for sure it was over for the Canadians when they took that penalty but guess the refs didn't want to be the ones deciding the game which is funny given how it ultimately went but at the time I thought alright back to 4 on 4 best team wins. Then when the americans took down Wickenheiser on the break and took the penalty I expected they'd return the favor there and offset that one too but I'm not sure what the rationalization was, that they already didn't award the penalty shot so that was the evening up? or what? but either way brutal call on the slashing and directly cost them the game. PP on the big ice 4 on 3, that was a done deal...you always play with fire with international refs and their calls, Americans were the better team for 52 minutes of that game but played on their heels for the last 8 so they have nobody to blame but themselves for letting the Canadians back into it. Shouldn't have ever come down to the refs call that should've been won in regulation.

I did tune in to the end of that game today, and while the drama was there, man, compared to real hockey, it's like watching it in slow motion. The difference in terms of speed, strength, agility, quickness, and overall athleticism between men and women tends to get amplified in team sports like hockey, basketball, and soccer.

RE: Olympic Hockey
The women are "quicker" though. They get bogged down falling down and hacking at shit like teenage boys, but generally the broads whip it around the rink way more 'quick' then the men do. NHL games are slog fests of trapping and board play, I'll give the women credit that they play more of a wide open game, small ice or big. The drop off past USA and Canada is steep tho. The fuking Swiss girls didn't even win a game and were able to hustle a comeback win in the bronze medal game.

You would think the NHL would increase the ice sheets tho. You see both men and women whipping it around way more on the big ice. The American men have figured it out also, it's the Canadians looking like stone feet once again not being able to get some quick cohesive play going on the big ice. I heard the Fins play on sheets in the middle of size between IHFF ice and NHL ice, that would be a perfect or for the NHL where you got beasts like Chara taking up half the ice.

Back to the women though. I seen one broad on team USA that could get it. It was maybe Kessell's younger sister or the broad right beside her.

Time to watch FIN- SWE. And fuck me sideways if not Tuukka Rask is sick and can't play today!
I hope Lehtonen will do a good job.
Bring it.

Rask sitting out for FIN is even worse than SWE losing Zetterberg. Couldn't come at a more inappropriate time for the finns who have a bad (mental) record with SWE.

2-1 after second period. Finns can't pull themselves together like always when they are playing against Sweden.

Watching FIN-SWE in ishockey is like watching a movie with a bad ending on replay.
I can't recall how many times I've seen this scenario.
Props to Sweden, it was the better team by far.
Pity for Captain Selänne, his sixth and last Olympics.

Finland was my dark horse to win gold until they lost 4 centers in the Koivus, Barkov, and Filpula. Sweden wins gold Sunday.

Rask being out was unfortunate, but Finland was probably the deepest team in net in the tournament.
All three goalies on the roster, NHL starters.

RE: Olympic Hockey
Not since 1998 when FIN eliminated SWE in the Olympic quarterfinals have they managed to repeat the effort in a crunch game. That must be a heavy mental block to bear.

Both teams played without their best players but it felt like Swe could slow down and control the game better. At times it felt like Temmu carried the team.

Not sure it would have made a difference but I would have started Antti Niemi over Lehtonen. He can steal a game when he's on.

Well that sucked. But Canada is definitely the best team, and today is cementing my belief that Quick is the best goalie on the planet.

II think Canada will win gold again and US bronze. Sweden is just not a match for CA, unless Hank steals it for them.

Canada might have the best defense ever assembled.

Their top 6 is easily top 10 in the world right now.

RE: Olympic Hockey
Hell of a game by Quick and full marks to the Americans for blocking shots and battling but that was a dominant performance on both ends of the ice by Canada, they were the better team on the ice all game and the right team got the W. Americans showed flashes but as I thought the Canadian depth was too much, they just kept coming in waves.

As I touched on earlier and got called a scandi hater for, the finns were just undermanned, those center losses were too much for them to overcome they dont have the talent to overcome those losses and needed to be flawless. For the guys raving about their offense, I think it was clear today that they just didnt have enough, lots of pps to generate offense and they looked hopeless. Hopefully see Teemu get a bronze in his last olympics in the bronze game, cant see the americans being too up for that game. Swedes confusing the hell out of me with their coaching decisions, Karlson is a stud and they seem to like the chemistry with Edler but how do you sit Ekman Larsen. Hes miles ahead of Kronwall and Ericson and Oduya, but I guess they like the chemistry theyve created with the other pairings and think their fates are tied to how they defend and not how much offense they can generate otherwise OELs transition game would be needed.

We must have been looking at different games because the last period I just saw Canada playing on the score.

not sure what youre trying to say here? That last period with the Americans needing the goal the Canadians put as many shots on net, id like to see the time of possession stats cause im pretty sure the Canadians played in the American zone most of the period and drew the only penalty. Americans blocked a shit ton of shots too, this was a tight score but the play wasnt was largely dominated by Canada. Their d kept the american chances to a minimum and largely from the perimeter, it was a dominant performance by the blue line.
