Shitty. That guy is a beast.

Some good hockey shaping up for the weekend!

Oh, and here come the Germans and their technical events.

He plays for our team in Detroit. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe he got hurt a few weeks ago but decided to play in the Olympics and now could be out for the rest of the season. People aren't happy here and are talking about trading him.
Dudes a great player though. Sorry to see him out like that.

No this is a disc injury which are always from wear and tear rather than individual hits.

RE: Sochi Winter Olympics 2014
The US-Russia game is pretty exciting hockey. Russia up 1-0 headed in the 2nd on a world class goal by Pavel Datysuk. Game was totally even until midway through the 2nd where the Russians seem to be putting a bit more pressure on the Americans, but now the Americans are pushing forward a bit more.

I'd definitely say the Russians stepped up their cohesiveness and defense from the first game. Goaltending on both sides has been very solid - Bobrovsky has played well for Russia - thought he might be a bit of a weak link but he's solid.

Winner of this game most likely gets a bye in the elimination round which is huge.

Edit: PP goal USA - 1-1 now. Great game 3rd period will be intense.

3-2 USA in penalties...

Pretty controversial overturn of Russia's goal in the 3rd. As a US fan sorta think Russia got screwed...they clearly scored and the net was just barely off it's moorings, Quick knocked it off not a Russian and the goal would have made it in even if the post wasn't slightly off. Also, the refs allowed play and didn't notice it was off so they made a mistake IMO.

Great game nonetheless but the refs should take some heat over such a huge game-changing call/reversal. Too bad it had to end up like that.

^^ Was considered a high stick on the 3rd Russian goal so waived off. Looked okay to me. Penalty Killing/Power Play were horrible for them. Should be an interesting remainder of the tourney

Ah, didn't see the high stick but I guess that's why they disallowed. I was watching it in Czech and they kept showing the goal itself.

Man the Swiss are beating the Czechs 1-0 and Sweden having a real tough time with Latvia...international hockey getting a lot more competitive these days.

What a thriller game today. US keep impressing and impressing.
Tomorrow is FIN-CAn.
I'm sad to read that we lost our first center Alexander Barkov. He's injured for the rest of the Olympics..
First Mikko Koivu, then Valtteri Filppula and now Barkov. Goddamn!

yeah that's brutal -- but the Finns are playing canada tough right now. Did you see that move Selanne did in the first period? He's 43 and still making moves like that!

Glad Russia just squeaked by Slovakia but frankly they need to pick up their game a bit if they want to medal. Maybe it was just a down game after yesterday's heartbreaker versus the US.

Jesus christ what a nailbiter that was.
Heads up to Finnish team even if they lost in OT.
Defence was good and Tuukka Rask was like a wall.
Teams are playing so good so it's impossible to predict who'll be in the semifinald this year.

When are the quarterfinals starting?

The men's games are actually tomorrow but the US - Canada women's gold medal game is on right now. There's an Olympic Hockey thread that seems to have superseded this on at least for hockey chat ))

But I'm predicting a US win over Canada in both games and the winner of Finland - Canada to take the men's gold!!

How about Switzerland beating Sweden for the women's bronze today?

The women's hockey is a joke. They are not allowed to check. The top two nations beat the the ranked 4-5 by near double digit marks.

It shouldn't be an Olympic event, the sport is simply not mature enough. Try telling that to the general public though.

The US vs Canada competition is no joke. That game today was a good game. Those women rough each other up good and make some damn decent plays. Also, some very bangable girls on those teams. Respect.

The problem with women's hockey is that the US and Canada are so far ahead of the rest of the world. Only 2 teams have a chance to win

Not a hockey fan by any means but it was sweet watching Canada beat the US in both women and men hockey. Specially the men win was quiet convincing. At times it was a one way traffic. Had it not been for the outstanding match the American goalie t would have been a riot.

Canada - Sweden next!

The men's Slalom is a fucking sham. 18 of the 30 best racers didn't finish (ie they've gone out of bounds). The slope is unworthy of an Olympic event and the pole setting was next to impossible.

It's a blight on the spirit of the Olympic games. There's so many part of this Olympic where Russia could have proved it's critics wrong and they totally dropped the ball on it.

Yeah that was crazy. With numbers like that it is beyond a challenge and is put squarely into the design failure category.

The course was set by Croatian coach Ante Kostelic, who was selected among the other Olympic slalom coaches by lottery as per the rules of the sport. This had nothing to do with Russia dropping the ball, but rather the coach setting a course that would (unsuccessfully) favor his son who was competing.

Sure but there are technical delegates that are supposed to review the course before the race, and there's also the fact of the sad state of the slope to begin. Something like this has never quite occurred in an Olympics and is happening in Russia.
