Some girls would rather have a guy who is cut/toned and size might not factor in so much.

How do you personally know if there are diminishing returns?

What MikeCF said closes that part of the discussion. Diminishing returns on getting big can manifest as wasting time doing something that in isn't giving you new results when you can be focussing on something else that would get you better ones.

Also, you don't have to have personal experience with something to be able to give a perspective. There's that and I can't tell you how many times I've heard girls say think big muscles is a turnoff to them. That could all be bullshit/hamster stuff- like I've said, I am trying to get bigger, but it something that I've considered when I'm planning how I want to spend my time.

Getting big is a massive time investment. I think we can all agree on this.

RE: Is There A Point Of Diminishing Returns On Weightlifting And Attracting Girls?
Hi guys.

I have a technical question for all of you who lift.

I started really low, 5' 11" -139 lbs, got by eating to 155 lbs.
Now gym costs are a bit high for me ( low scholarship, plus I have many costs to cover, parents abroad), and I have been trying the Lafay method, a book written by a French specialist to workout without material like those used at the gym.

Fair enough, there is a lot of advice on it, but some exercises involve a bar ( is drawbar the correct term in English? the one you ue to extend yourself above the ground and strenghthen your arms, back and shoulders) . I can't buy one because where I live the walls are quite fragile ( if you hammer a nail the wall cracks a bit), so I am reduced to skipping those exercises. However I know it is important, and that you have to work on all of your body to yield proficient results.

Do any of you have some routines to allow me to work on these points without the bar?

Where did you get that idea from? Going to the gym 4-6 hours a week is a massive time investment?

PM me for accommodation options in Bangkok.

I could be wrong, but to get in the way MikeCF is talking about, don't you need to go to the gym more often than that?

I don't know which of his posts you are referring to, but even intermediate weightlifting programs won't have you in the gym much more than 6 hours per week.

Fact: Someone who has completed several cycles of Texas Method/MadCow/Jim Wendler is going to be bigger than 90% of guys.

Most of us here aren't trying to become professional bodybuilders. The secret is hitting the compounds and eating a lot. This shit isn't complicated.

PM me for accommodation options in Bangkok.

First time posting here, but been a reader of assorted blogs and the forum for a long time.

Anyways, you won't get "BIG" without going to the gym, pretty much guaranteed. It CAN be done, there's proof and all, but it'll be way more effort and time than a gym. You CAN get tone as hell and an effective build for attracting women without it though.

Get ahold of P90X (and follow it ALL, diet etc) and you can make huge progress in the fit direction out of gym... but if you want to be big, hard work and heavy weights in the gym is the best way. (if there was a better, easier route, it would be more popular, period)

If you want big, buy Arnold's Weightlifting Encyclopedia, this book is my freaking bible. http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Encycloped...dybuilding

I'm a sophomore in college, 6'2, 190lbs with very low body fat. Start of my freshman year I weighed 145, skinny as a rail, not the case now (though I still want way more size, I still feel too skinny)

Oh, and as for the original purpose of this thread... There is definitely a point (where I am now), where all my gains are purely for myself. I'm already top 10% fittest in most any social setting, and if you have a Thad Castle build or Brad Pitt Fight Club build, both will attract girls nearly equally. Fit is whats important in general. Only other guys notice the small details of male physique, just like only other girls notice the small details in a girls outfit.

If you have trouble gaining weight, like I always have, just eat a lot. Fat is not a fear you should have. My freshmen year I put on around 25lbs first semester. I was eating 5000+ calories a day at the time, around 100 g of supplemented protein a day (shakes mixed with whole milk), multivitamins, and creatine so I could maintain pump 24/7 and like my reflection.

Anymore I try and eat 6-8 eggs a day in some form or another(protein for muscle and cholesterol to maintain testosterone), a protein shake, some yogurt, multivitamins, and eat alot of chicken (I buy precooked in bulk from Sams club, I love their teriyaki chicken). Just eat alot of protein and carbs. Those are the building blocks and workers required to build muscle. If you are working out hard and not gaining... eat more. Working 24/7 won't build a house without bringing in supplies to build with.

Also, if your gym has a sauna... hit it after you lift. I take alot of preworkout and its a great way to clean those chemicals out of your system and run game on girls while shirtless and with a fresh pump. The sauna is a goldmine for me... half naked girls feeling their worst "I'm all sweaty and my makeup looks bad", that's fish in a barrel for approaches if you're confident there.

Holy shit, that's a lot. I'm veg.. and I'm like 14 years older than you so my metabolism has been slowing down a lot.

Any older guys here can vouch for eating a lot and working it out at your age?

I've spent the couple of weeks starving myself because I was getting fat. Just eating a lot of berries.

I couldn't exercise much last year because of a surgery, but want to get back into it and build some more mass.

In that case I can't say much... but my dad is 50, and is the same bodyweight and height as me.
Dude runs 5 miles a day and eats an ungodly amount of salad along with weight training.
Though, if you're wanting to tone up and trim fat, I really can't say enough for p90X. It really does work and I've had multiple friends and family friends trim and tone up through it.

I hate running myself, the best motivation I ever had to run was when I was training to do a Tough Mudder. http://toughmudder.com/ Check them out, they're fun, have lots of good looking girls, are great motivation to stay/get more fit, and they're a badass story to tell while dealing out game.

Oh, and tough mudder is a 10-11 mile obstacle course put together by ex british special forces, obstacles ranging from mile of knee deep mud, to running through 10,000 volt live wires. Great for fitness, great for stories, great for meeting people.

I have a workout bench at home and my weights. Are you telling me that I can't get big with that stuff? Why not? What's a gym have that I can't do at my place or on the street?

I'm sorry man, I didn't realize you had your own weight setup. Go for it! That's the only reason I was suggesting gym. When most people aim to avoid the gym, they mean bodyweight exercises, and those just don't build mass as effectively. If you've got your own bench and weights, by all means, you're good to go. Just acquire more gear as the need develops.

And I would highly recommend Arnold's book from my first post on here, it has more lifts you can do with the stuff you have, what they work best for (book helped me grow my shoulders a ton), and diet info for every type imaginable. (along with drug info, and every other bit of possible info related to bodybuilding). I have a really old edition of it, and it is 700+ pages of gold. I'd imagine the updated version with recent science would be even better.

Also acquaint yourself with the bodybuilding.com forums. The folks over there are awesome, welcoming, and insanely knowledgeable. They will help you achieve your goals far better than I can.

What is your recommendation for weights to get? I can't bring any big machines in here, so minimalism is key.

(edited to add quick answer and quotes)

Quick answer: Bench and dumbells

Long answer with reasons:
Your flat bench can be used to cover flat bench, barbell curls, bent over rows, military press, laying down tricep extensions, and I'm sure others I can't think of. I'd suggest dumbells in whatever weights you need for assorted curls, shoulder flys, bent over tricep extensions, arnold press, shrugs, etc.

Between a flat bench and a few dumbells you've just covered biceps, triceps, deltoids, traps, lats, and pecs. Your whole upper body. Freeweights are where its at.

I don't know your strength levels, so I don't know what plates and weights you'll need. But for most of my lifts I aim for 4 sets of 10 reps. So think in those terms if you want to follow a routine similar to mine.

For abs:http://hubpages.com/hub/P90x-Ab-Ripper-X-Step-by-Step-Guide (the only p90x routine I do, just killer, love it)

I can't help for lower body work as my legs are, not to be emulated... I treat my legs like past lays, I ignore them and watch them fade into obscurity. Not proud of it, but just have trouble focusing on them.

I'm 31 and still a little overweight so my diet is going mimimal. From what I found in another thread, an easy way to burn even more fat is to lift and the muscles rebuilding themselves will eat up the fat quickly.

Hydrated muscles are anabolic: they work harder and burn more energy.

However, most of those tips are the 1% thing. You need to do lots of them right to add up the 1%s into a significant result. Doing just one thing won't get you anywhere.

Drinking too much water is called water loading and is only good for a water cut during a week before competition in bodybuilding or a weight-classed sport. It doesn't directly burn any fat.

I reached a point of diminishing returns when too much time was spent weight lifting and not honing my martial arts skills.

I only have so many hours in the week, and priority goes to being able to dominate a fight.

bit off topic and its not the main point of your post, but I feel compelled to educate you on the business model of tough mudder.

Tough Mudder was started by some Ivy league biz students as a senior project/thesis. There is a prominent adventure type race in England (I believe, might be the Irish) that is crazy hardcore. Basically these seniors got in contact with the owners of the original European one and picked their brains about the biz operations for their senior project. They claimed to be doing a case study.

After a bit, the European cats got a bad feeling and asked for a NDA (non disclosure agreement). The seniors refused and cut contact. They then used everything they had been told to start the first tough mudders.

Essentially tough mudder is a complete rip off of a more hardcore european version.

So no, tough mudder wasn't created by ex-british SF. It was created by some sleazy college students that couldn't come up with anything new, so they essentially stole what someone else had done.
