Sometimes a girl bringing up a boyfriend means that she is blowing you off, true, but it's happened a couple of times to me recently where girls have used it as a kind of shit test. In these cases the boyfriends were in another country, so maybe a little atypical, but they were obvious shit tests, confirmed by subsequent bang in one case and making out in the other.

Honestly, unless the boyfriend being mentioned is near enough to cause shit, I barely even register if a girl says she has a boyfriend anymore. As far as I'm concerned a girl uses the boyfriend ruse to both blow guys off and to shit test them (and they only bother shit testing guys they have at least some attraction to). I'm not going to delude myself that I have the psychic powers to determine which one I'm facing so I just proceed and see what happens.
