In my old apartment I had a sofa and a bad. It was a pretty big apartment but after that I moved to another city and got a much smaller apartment where I could only get a bed in and I had to sell the sofa.

The lesson I learned from this time is that it is even better if you have just a bed and no sofa. let's take for example a movie night with a girl. When a girl enters your apartment for the first time she will probably feel more comfortable to sit on the sofa than to go straight to your bedroom. However, when you only have a bed and this is the only place where you can sit, she will regard it as totally normal to sit there with you. This leads to her being comfortable in your bed in a very short amount of time.

Get a world map, mount it on a cork board so you can put pins in it and proceed to mark out where in the world you've been. You can even color code and use some pins for places you want to go. This piece makes for an unbeatable conversation piece. Nothing in life has bagged me as much poon as talking about all the exciting places I've been to.

Great to have a dedicated photo album on your tablet with pics from your travels as well. Print some or and make a Montage besides the world map.

I personally love studio apartments as it's so easy to get a girl to sit on your bed and thus lead to a bang. Had a big-ass apartment in Taipei but honestly prefer my shitty little thing in Bangkok (in terms of banging anyway)

Some other must haves:

1) A balcony! I open the doors for the whole day, makes the place seem very open. Been in some proper shitty one-rooms in Taipei. Without a balcony it really sucks and says to the girl that you're a broke English teacher living in a tiny room. When really, you're a broke English teacher living in a tiny room with an awesome balcony ;-). The view of the tropical fauna and surroundings make it look a WHOLE LOT less shit. Opens up onto the swimming pool below too, so makes me feel hi-so despite paying about fifty quid a month for the piece of crap.

2) A fridge stocked full of beer/alcohol. Like REALLY stocked. You open it and she's spoilt for choice type of effect. "Wow you have Chang AND Leo, I'm wet. What are you? a doctor or something? Let's have sex right this instant"

3) Music on the ready. (Or a TV). Just stick something on in the background that'll make her shut up. "OMG I love Rihanna." "I agree. I love The Rihannas too, my favourite was their self-titled personally, then they sold out". I usually change it to Limp Bizkit or something after all of twenty minutes.

4) Warm lighting. Can make the place really cosy. Warm, orange lighting just makes me want to cosy up like I did when it was -2 degrees in grey old England. Makes me want to grab the blanket and roll up in it and sleep. Can be a real deal-breaker. Pity that the cow usually pulls the blanket too much and it gives me an uncomfortable nights sleep. I like having the blanket near my face, blanky style. Actually let's keep going:

5) A really over-sized blanket. This way you'll get a night's fucking sleep.

I've had a number of friends who lived in really nice studios downtown Chicago so you get awesome location and views but obviously sacrafice space. The key to studios is either using height if you have tall ceilings to create some seperate spaces or even using dividers to give you a feel of two rooms. I was going to look for an older post I had seen before where someone posted a pic of the studio with teh loft, I thought that was awesome but see a couple others have posted it. I found a cool link wiht some ideas...

Studios are better than a regular apartment for a young guy because they are cheaper, in good locations and smaller so easier to keep clean......room dividers can be good if you let drunk friends spend the night and need some privacy. Wal mart surprisingly has nice ones that can double as art if you dont have room to hang up paintings

Studio's are infinitely preferable to 1-bed places.

Everything about them is more conducive to a player who can't afford a penthouse.

In fact, I'd take one over everything but a penthouse.

I had a studio for 5 years in downtown Seattle. I had my office in the entry (desk, chair, imac) and to the side in the main room I had just a bed. No other furniture besides an end table, a couple plants and a couple lamps. When I had women over, there was no other place for them to sit. They always just came in and sat on the bed. It was a great setup, perfect for the player lifestyle. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for that.

Good advice in the thread already. My first apartment in my working life was a small pricey studio in the Northeast. I got a fancy Ikea futon, paid like $700-800 for the frame and mattress. I also had a 50 inch plasma, a desk and two comfortable chairs. If I were you, I'd skip the futon and just get a bed. It was nice to start out watching a movie or something on a sofa, but then I'd have to pause everything to fold the futon out into a bed. And I eventually had to give away the pricey futon to a neighbor family because I had to move asap and couldn't sell it in time.

I'm sick of roommates as well and I'm actually looking to move out soon. I've been looking and I'm debating between a studio and a 1 bedroom. The studio is obviously cheaper rent wise and I'd have to buy much less furniture, so I'd spend much less money overall, but I'm in my mid thirties already, I don't know if a studio is really the image I want to portray, but on the other hand I've seen pictures of studio decor that look incredible. My biggest annoyance with studios is really having a kitchen right next to your bed, it just looks ugly to me. Is there a way to get around that?

That looks beautiful, even the separation between the kitchen area and the rest is tasteful and well done, but unfortunately I've never seen any high ceiling studios in Miami so far or that kind of kitchen area setting. Another thing, if you're renting, can you even add that kind of setting to the studio? Can you have construction done on it?

Other people have alluded to this and how having a bed is better then having a sofa because it's one less step and all that, and I'm not trying to disagree, but does it really make any difference? If a girl is already inside my place there is no way something is not going to happen, it doesn't make a difference if you have no bedrooms or 5. I actually like to escalate anywhere, the kitchen, the balcony, the living room, so I'd like to ask, apart from that reason, what makes you prefer the studio? And to the people that have had both a studio and a 1 bedroom, which one you liked better?

^^ I prefer a large studio over a 1 bedroom that is the same size. Open space makes it easier to arrange furniture and has a cool bachelor pad vibe. The only thing is that if you have a wing/friend staying over, there is no privacy to bang a girl.

That said, I live in a small 2br by myself here in NYC. It has a tiny living room since it is really supposed to be a 1br but was converted. I do wish I had more space in the living room to entertain but it comes off as cozy so its all good.

The space doesn't really matter to get the +1. Its more about your logistics and game. Just keep the pad clean and don't come with the cheesy decor.

Yes, balcony is a great prop - in warm climates or the summer.

I like studios too. Also easier to furnish with style and swag. Easy to stuff personality building stuff in there, if you ride an expensive mountain bike or skate or box or guitar or do anything else with equipment.

Ditto on the stocked fridge, I considered getting a wine cooler in a prominent place when I lived in Thailand. Something like this, but didn't as would be overkill for most girls.

I have lived in a studio for 6 years. I love it!

It's affordable, easy to clean, convenient, etc.

Like all real estate, LOCATION IS ESSENTIAL.

With apartments, there is another important factor:

Neighbors!

You do NOT want neighbors above you!!! They will make annoying noise.

You do NOT want to live next to a large family or lots of kids. Too much noise.

Some buildings have thick, sound proof walls, other buildings have thin walls, be aware of this.

I was lucky that I got a studio on the top floor of a building and on the corner of the building. This was ideal because I do not have neighbors above me or on my left and right. I only have neighbors below me and behind me.

Be careful of noisy neighbors!!! Find out who is above you, who is next to you, etc. Are they big families?, kids?, where is their kitchen located, where do they watch tv, etc.

Also, be aware of noise from the parking lot, noise from the highway, etc.

Yes.

The "loft" was not part of the original construction.

The previous owner added the staircase and bedroom "loft".

This is a great idea if you can find a studio with high ceilings. You can turn your "studio" into a 1 bedroom!

I would always go for top floor. Better view, no noise above you. The only advantage i can think of for ground floor is that you don't have to take the elevator or stairs up. Also i suppose you may be more likely to have an outdoor yard / garden area if you're on the ground floor - but that's pretty rare in an apartment type building.

Any tips for how to get an idea of the soundproofing quality of a building when viewing a place? All i can think of is try to make an appointment to view during the evening when people are likely to be home from work.

I think the best art is art you've made or photos you've taken if you got a decent camera. This is far from great quality but shortrunprints makes like 2x3 prints for $4 a print where as others are charging $50 plus for granted better quality but pretty steep. If its your own art or pictures its a conversation starter.

You could also get a futon instead.

It's the same principle: the bed folds away to become a living room.
