Gramercy is real life pimp shit, and superclose to everything. You will have to book a minimum of 10 nights for most places in the buiding but definitely worth it. Panties get wet the minute they walk into the building, daygame is great simply walk out the building in any direction !!!! There are two upscale hotels directly next door and a supermarket that is a pussy palace especially at about 5-7 at night every night. You can get to either greenbelt or the fort pretty easily and as Paul B, and DD said the logistics are great there is a hugh parking lot right in the front of the building where they have Phillippnes street food (I wouldnt touch it but too each his own) and a live band almost every night of the week.

getting ANYWHERE in manila is a pain in the ass. It took
more more than 90 minutes to get from Gramercy in makati
to goto the fort one day....if you count the time waiting for
cabs as well as the driving time.

You will want to travel during off peak traffic times if possible.

BKK is a million times easier to get anywhere.

Manila is not an easy city to either live in or visit IMO.....
and I spent 6 weeks there in 2013.

Wiki says its 4X more population dense than Toyko for instance.

I agree that traffic in Manila is a hassle, but spend some time in Jakarta, then you will find Manila a breeze.
At least Manila has a rail based metro system and major roads and expressways that are not generally gridlocked.
Try living in Bangkok far from the Skytrain or MRT. eg Khao San Rd area.

The Fort is an unfortunate location in that there is a golf course right in between it and Makati with only 2 roads in and out, and all the public transport to there is also dependent on the roads.
It is a great environment when you are there, but a bit insular and not as easy for "visitors" to come to you, which is generally how you would want to operate in Manila.

If you live handy to Greenbelt or Glorietta, you can walk into an aircon mall which is effectively a linked complex of 10 malls and 2 department stores, also connected to the Ayala metro station, from where you can efficiently get around.

The laws are pretty harsh, but as a white dude with money you're unlikely to ever have something bad happen to you in a country with such an entrenched colonial mentality. Always have money to bribe cops in a worst case scenario. Baguio and Segada are both 6 hours north by bus and have decent weed actually. You can get some near primo de vera street under edsa in pasay, though I did see a cop about 10 blocks away from where I bought it on a busy street. Its pretty easy to get a hookup, if you get a rotation going you'll usually have 1 girl who can hook you up.

Sagada is 10hours away and when I was there in early November it was really hard to find anything since the village been raided a week before and but seven men to jail. This was the district police who did the raid from Baguio or Manila, as the local police officer was said to smoke himself. They didn't find anything in the raid but planted the evidence on the men who was on the hitlist, I was told. Maybe business is up and running again, I don't know. Pretty beautiful nature up there but it's cold and I was freezing as I was used to the tropical climate.

friheten makes a good point about Bangkok accommodation. You can get a pretty nice serviced apartment there for like $500/month. The same thing in Manila would probably cost $1000 or more.

I think Bangkok on the whole is much better for tourists. Hotels are better value, Thai food is much better (although I still like Filipino food), infrastructure is better, Skytrain and MRT are actually decent, and there are some nice attractions to see.

Manila has a bunch of advantages (English, visa extensions, etc.) but like DD previously said, they're only apparent when staying long term.

On the topic of places to live in Metro Manila, I still think Makati and Fort Bonifacio are #1 and #2 respectively. Eastwood is terrible due to its location. It really is far from everything. There's even something called the "Eastwood Bubble" – people just stay in Eastwood because of the major hassle of leaving to go somewhere, then coming back, as cabs will quote high rates or outright refuse trips going there.

Sulit.com.ph is a great website to find places.

In the center? Center of what?

You can find 20,000 a month easily if you are signing a 6+ month lease. If only 1 month you will have fewer choices but it can certainly be done.

So what are the spots to hit on a Friday night?

I got in yesterday morning. Went to Greenbelt last night. Hit the Cuban joint for a hookah and some San Miguels. I got attention from the gaggle of hookers that hang out there (I'm not looking for p4p at the moment) but there didn't seem to be any non-working girl targets that weren't overweight. Horrible, horrible ratios. It was so bad that I got into a conversation with some Saudi guys. Run of the mill expat conversation with Muslims. Blah. I was on the hunt so I got out of there and went down to some lounge bar named 'Kabuku' or something. It's a corner unit in the Greenbelt and has a patio area with a dj. Again, terrible ratios (4:1?!?) and filled with hookers, little p4p Filipino faggots, and slightly overweight NGO-type Western girls. There were several Flips in there that were obviously just hanging out but they had tons of orbiters. I was kind of pissed off at that point and everyone that I asked seemed to agree that this was the best spot in the city. WTF?

I'm honestly not feeling that area. I don't doubt that Greenbelt is a good place to take a date but it seems like a horrible place to pick up. Maybe I was in the wrong spot or maybe Thursday is not the right day to be there. It seemed like the Irvine Spectrum with Filipino families, hookers, +50 year old expats, and fat, older Western couples. It actually made me kind of pissed off that I flew all the way down here and was met by that.

Am I missing something here? What's good on a Friday?

Pros and cons about living in the fort compared to Makati? They are pretty close, right? Seems there's a few bjj gyms in Makati, but didn't see any listings for ones in the fort.
