At Carnaval in Brazil I had kids try to pick my pockets in the crowds. I came prepared though and kept all of my money in my sock. So no damage done.

In Buenos Aires of all places, I had gone running with my iPod and a guy came up and tried to convince me that he had a gang of 10 dudes ready to kick my ass if I didn't give it to him. I basically told him to go fuck himself. Nothing happened.

Most cities are OK if you stay in the right places London is safe enough provided you know where to walk to and where to get a taxi to. Its the same with every big city I ever went to. There are exceptions Mexico city is reportedly dangerous at night where ever you walk but locals always talk up the danger in thier own city because they read the news and watch the V there.

I almost got robbed in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The would be robbers backed down at the last second when they saw I was going to stand my ground. That's the only time I've ever come close to a robbery.

Of course I'm aware of the banlieues being a high risk zone. I was referring to the city proper where I have heard/read that it can be dangerous at night and specially in metro stations. Plus, the cops apparently are getting more and more discriminating and stop anyone that looks non white. Have you witnessed any of that?

Mexico City is the same as everywhere, Mexico City is like a bunch of small cities in one, some are really dangerous(Iztapalapa) and some are really ok/cool/safe(Santa Fe, Polanco)

São Paulo is very similar to this. In one area you will feel that you're in Paris or NYC and some tube stations away you will feel that you are in Nigeria.

Such a peaceful and lovely little town too but get's pretty dark at night even in the tourist areas and lots of little streets so probably a good place for muggers to pray on tourists.

I was told SP was really dangerous before I went but I felt much less threatned there than I did in other Brazilian / South American cities, not that I really ever felt in danger in any but SP seemed really safe to me. Wasn't worried at all and went all over town to lots of different areas, sometimes walked home for miles, drunk and alone.

I've been lucky. I grew up moving around a lot and learned a lot of tricks (like roosh's bait) to keep from getting pick-pocketed or mugged. Spending some time in Hong Kong also helped, it's the pick-pocket capitol of the world.

A lot of it comes down to how you carry/present yourself. You're chosen based on three basic criteria:

Time/Place
Opportunity
Appearance

You can never completely remove yourself from being targeted... it's all about practicing smart travel habits.

Try to blend in, stick to safe neighborhoods, and hide your "stash" well when outside... especially outside of 1st world countries.

I have a question for the travelers. I've been told so many times I have a pissed off face and girls always ask why I'm mad. I think its my shaved head, goatee and eyes. Got those pissed off looking eyes, I can't help it.

Would this make me more of a target overseas or the opposite?

Most likely, the opposite. It's human nature to not opt for the easy take down.

This happened to me in Malaysia on a beach holiday island (Perhentian islands) where sandals/flip flops were terrible quality and 5 times overpriced. I was swimming with some girls at night and some one took my flip flops. As the cheap bastard that i am, i just walked barefoot for the next few days and waited till i was back on the mainland to buy new ones. My feet were scorched during the day walking in the boiling hot sand. I had to walk from shadow to shadow all the time. I actually traveled through South East Asia for 7 months only on flip flops. I walked into a washroom at a nightclub in Holguin, Cuba. Normally when you enter the washroom, theres a security guy who also sells flowers at a table. The second i walked in I was surrounded by 6 guys. A friend of mine who for all intensive purposes might as well be called my bodyguard walked in behind me and said He's with me. One of the guys then said well can we have a tip atleast. He yells back at these guys no. Thankfully, I had probably one of the baddest dudes on the planet with me. A few weeks later my friend who protected me was outside a bar when one guy put his hand near his face. My friend proceeded to not only fight but pummel the guy and his 2 buddies in a 3 on 1. Sometimes its good to have bad ass friends.

I've only been living here in London for about 8 months or so, but it seems like the problem is that the "estates" (the projects) are spread out throughout the city, so there's not really a true ghetto area you can make a point to avoid. I live in a middle class neighborhood where houses are going for £400,000+ yet right around the corner is a giant estate.

My getting (almost) beatup story. Around 9 pm, I was making a 3 block journey to Tescos grocery store when two minority youths barred my path and told me they were going to have to teach me a lesson because I had been bothering their brother (no idea what they were talking about). Luckily, I was able to keep my wits about me and kept my back to a fence so they couldn't surround me. Then I saw an opening, juked, ducked under one of their arms, and ran the last 2 blocks into the Tescos.

Yeah that's the thing with London. To get anywhere by foot thats not bang in the center, you will be at least be brushing past an estate because they're peppered in everywhere. I lived in Angel which is one of the nicest areas for educated, middle-class+ young people and even there, it's 1-2 blocks away from some rough areas. And you get the spillover onto the highstreet - kids with knives, attack dogs, attitude.

Thats actually what I dont like about London, unless you're in ultra poshville (chelsea kensington etc) you're always slightly on edge because you're never far from some nasty bits.

I thought this was just "how the world was" until I spent some weeks in Helsinki, Stockholm and Berlin. Literally, none of this atall. Maybe 5% of the general day-and-night "aggro" vibe on the streets that London and many UK cities have.

I saw someone get stabbed in the head and die in London, outside an upmarket Central London club. Again it's the nasty elements - a gang of inner city kids and/or immigrants - spilling over into otherwise affluent areas.

I feel safer in Bangkok. Now, that cant be right.

I feel safer in Bangkok than in my home city too. Just before I came here there was someone in my home city who got stabbed in the head in the middle of the day bang smack in the centre of town, a group of people having fights with knives and crossbows and all sorts of other shit yet I don't live in a city that's considered dangerous. Tell anyone I'm going to BKK and they tell me I have to be super careful as it's dangerous, doesn't feel like it to me at all.

Three times abroad, once in Africa. Twice in Brazil.

To be honest though all three times I was drunk as fuck and walking around solo in unsafe areas so I sorta deserved it.

Luckily I lost a combined $15 cause I never carried much cash at night and when I did I put it in my hidden pocket under my shorts.

I never would carry a nice phone or a lot of money in my pockets. Put any money in a hidden pocket. I met so many pl when traveling who lost a shitload of money or expensive shit like iPhones and that just sucks.

1. Lets see, St. Thomas(or was it st marteen?) I walked out of the "good" cruise area in the slums around with the rusted tin roofs. Some guy yells something at me in I think spanish (before I spoke spanish) brandishing a machette, and starts walking towards me, I was in a interesting mood that day, hence the walk, I took off my belt with my big ol nasty belt buckle, wrapped it around my fist and started walking towards the guy. He dropped the machette and ran.... bitch.

2. Somehow in an island very similar to Cuba someone stole 600 out of the 2000 usd I had in my bag, I have no idea how, nearest I can figure is maybe there was a midget hiding in the trunk as that was the only time the bag was out of my sight, and the guy insisted I couldnt keep it with me in the car. Some bitches got a blackberry from me even after I double checked while walking them out, smooth criminal indeed. I did have a 3 some out of it though.

3. Best story ever, in Costa rica at an after hours bar, some chick asks to borrow my 2 week old iphone 4, I knew better but I was drunk, I turn around for a second and she jumps in a taxi and hauls ass. I memorized the plate as I ran after the taxi driver, and called the company, he came back. We go to look for where he dropped the girl off and asks someone, Donde esta la morena transvesti? I was like WTF? A tranny stole my phone? Damn.

4. I was a dumb ass, made "friends" with some americans at a local bar in San Jose, I show some guy my Bulova watch, get distracted and forget to ask for it back.... he doesnt offer when they leave... doah!

Colombia? too many cell phones to remember, I used to have 2 black berries and 2 spare iphones in my safe for when I would lose one hahaha

Have yet to be a robbery victim at home or abroad (knock on wood) but about three weeks ago a 62 yr. old man was brutally beaten about two blocks from my apartment. I live in what used to be a "safe" neighborhood that has seen an influx of minorities in recent years. The rate of violent crime has since gone through the roof.

Poor old fucker that got mugged has his teeth knocked out, and his leg is severely damaged. He's diabetic and may lose the leg, all for having been jumped by a junkie looking for quick cash.
