okay, money is more or less an abstract thing. If we remove money from the discussion (paper, plastic cards, zeros and ones in a bank) we find that we need:

1. Food, clothing, shelter, medical care, physical health.
2. Pussy
3. Life satisfaction without enormous stress.

The couple seems to be able to handle all these issues. For some people, item 3 cannot be met sitting on a beach and mountain biking. They are much more ambitious.

However, the human body is really not designed for chronic stress, such as working 12 hours a day for a boss that yells at you. This is why its often item 1 (physical health) that trumps our ambition to succeed in a high pace environment. That's basically what happened to the guy who was overweight and ended up in the hospital.

I'm a hybrid. I have a small business and am successful at most of my goals. I have had many opportunities to make even more money. But I also have chosen to live very simply at certain times, both overseas and in communes/farms.

There is no right answer. Eckhart tolle said it best: 'humans are an always expanding expression of the universe's creativity (achieving greatness). But we also seek the simplicity of non duality' (sitting on the beach watching the waves, not worrying about bills/boss breathing down your neck). While there is a satisfaction to be had from achieving material success, I pity the man who rarely experiences deep inner happiness. They are not mutually exclusive of course. But in our "rat race" we have to remind ourselves that money and pussy are not the only things that are worthy of our effort.

Notice I don't even care if you're banging high quality or not, if you're happy not living up to your potential that's cool with me. Don't try to tell me there are more opportunities in the DR than the USA or I will just laugh at you.

Once you're banging say 10 chicks a year and all of them are 7's to you, what else is there to do besides make more money? People keep telling me I am going to "slow down" I actually get worse. I care less and less about 20+ bangs a year and more about just keeping one or two foreign girlfriends here and then night gaming for one night stands a couple times a month.

To each his own, I want to at least say I tried to compete at the highest level in the USA though.

So I will never understand that mentality I suppose, can't you at least move all your chips in and try to go to the top? Not even going to try? Not even going to throw your hat in the ring and instead going to get stomped on and move out already? I just don't get it. No different than approaching a 9 or 10. I get blown out all the time, but I would rather get blown out than not try at all. If players applied the same logic to making money and improving their lives the USA would be a better place to live.

Westcoast you are probably one of the few guys on this forum who values money over life experiences.

I think the majority of us lived that corporate life for a while and while we could be doing that right now and making more money than what we are making now, we know that the corporate stress (annoying boss, colleagues back stabbing you, jealousy, lack of freedom, etc) won't give us a better quality of life than the ones we have abroad. If you are maximizing your potential and your potential is not giving you a better quality of life, are you really maximizing your potential? Maybe you are, but if I am doing something that is not giving me a better quality of life or is not making me a happier man than I don't want to be doing it. Let me contradict myself now, I may go back to that corporate life and sacrifice my freedom for few years but there is no way in the world, that I am waiting 15 years to live the lifestyle that I desire.

You are ignoring the fact that your world view could change by the time you become really successful and by that time you may realise that is stupid to be chasing girls in Latin america or whatever place you are looking to move. How many guys on this forum are over 40 and are still chasing tail abroad? Over 50? The majority of us on here are in our 20s and 30s, during that time there is a high probability that you could impregnate a girl, get married, get tired of travelling abroad or something else could happen to change your world view.

You are also over estimating how much you need to live a good lifestyle in those countries. Do you really think you need 100k per year to live good in those countries and to pull quality tail? In DR for example, there are lots of 8's (forum 8s) making 200 dollars per month, you make 10 times more money than that and they assume that you are really well off.

On the side note, reading your shit on this thread was motivating, I just hit the gym hard after reading your posts.

Yeah I guess I don't see what "life experiences" I am really missing here. I go to a new country every year, I don't have people back stabbing me because 1/2 of the office is scared of me and the other half is trying to get me more responsibility.

I don't value money over experience, I know money buys experience. I can hop on a plane this week and go party in a new country, hell I am doing that this week.

I can wait till January and do it again in a different international location, whelp I am doing that as well.

I don't let people control me, I don't let the environment enter my headspace. I don't even let work stress me out at all and it's one of the most competitive fields in the world.

I don't look back, if I got into say the "top 10%" I say I'm at the bottom again and look at how I can get to the top 5%. If I meet that mark, congrats to me I am at the bottom again how do I get to the top 4%... So the cycle continues. The only thing I put ahead of this mindset is my health, and I'm probably the healthiest I have ever been in my life now that I drink so little, juice and sleep well at night with no stress in my life.

Again it's just my personality, it's not even hard work. I am the last person in the office who is going to complain. Get that the fuck out of here. Complaining just means someone believes they deserve something they don't have. If you don't have something find a way to take it. No one is going to give you shit for free in real life.

I don't want to do that either. My ideal lifestyle is ~$5,000 per month (obviously more is better, but 5k gives me more than enough to do everything I want and to save a decent stack each month) and being mobile, which is what I'm working towards. I.E. I'm a bit sick of Bangkok, I'd like to go recharge in Vientiane for a few weeks or month, hang out in the sunshine, and then go hit up Jakarata or Manilla for an extended period of time and continue to lift weights, and find a solid boxing gym. Twice a year I'd like to go back to California to visit my friends and family, and maybe take a couple trips down to Mexico or the DR for a change of pace.

I don't see that lifestyle as not living up to my full potential, or not giving it shot at the highest level. I think bringing down 5K per month and having that much freedom is the ideal lifestyle. WestCoast obviously has different goals than I do, but I don't see either as being right or wrong, just different.

Agreed. I'd be happy with that too, though my ideal is around $10K per month. I may not be there now but I see no reason to believe I won't eventually when I decide to and stick with that decision.

And most of my biggest goals have to do with my writing rather than money, though obviously if I achieve them I may make a great deal of it as well.

I may add becoming a multi-millionaire to my list eventually, but for the time being it's not a high priority. Nor do I think achieving it requires being tied to one location or showing up to an office everyday. I also have no desire to wield power in an office situation or have a bunch of co-workers afraid of me...

Being unchained to one location makes me feel free - seeing the world and how other people live without having to dash home after a shallow preview fascinates me. I also like being in beautiful natural locations.

I honestly don't see what's wrong with indulging any of that. The rules of the game have simply changed and some people want something different now.

This woman, for instance, is also an author - I've actually read her book, which was profiled on CNN. And I don't typically read books by female authors, so if she got it into my hands, I imagine it's done pretty well. I believe it was a best-seller actually.

I don't know exactly what the guy has going on, but it hardly seems like she's thrown in the towel on life.

I'll also say that free, idle time - while it shouldn't encompass your every waking hour - is highly underrated in our society. There are a lot of productive things that can be done with idle time that make your life and the world better without necessarily making those dollar signs. You can also work on projects with the potential to do both.

Many of the great thinkers from history lived in much the same manner - giving themselves free time and finding interesting ways to fill it. Look up a book on Amazon called "Daily Rituals." Now people are finding the means to do that through geo-arbitrage.

Not being chained to a traditional schedule doesn't have to equal a life of sloth and purposelessness.

My issue is that he seems to not have been able to control his lifestyle in USA and decided if he can't beat them(join them), RUN from them. I always think that when I hear the generic term"rat race". Its only a race if you RUN it. He could have lived any type of lifestyle he wanted..but he decided to conform. When he couldn't maintain that anymore(emotionally not financially) he moves away where he thinks "he escaped the rat race". But there is another rat race going on in Costa Rica,he just isn' running in it.
I would be more impressed if he moved to a really expensive country that put him on the bottom..but his personality he wouldn't be able to get ahead because he would enter the new "rat race".

@worldwidetraveler, I assume most of those guys you see drinking all day were doing it before they retire. Those guys exist. I met plenty expats in Kiev who actually bragged about cheap smokes and beer. They were oldies who weren't hounding girls..they were going after cheap alcohol(4 beers cost a buck back then, pack of marlboro's 50 cents).
Lets NOT forget Odessa expats are MOSTLY the shadiest of the pack..Odessans themselves are MOST shady folks in FSU, so makes sense an expat there would also be shady.My wife always says its a city of pirates.
That being said SEA is an early retirement haven for ex military. They do their time and deserve to live out there lives on small pensions.otherwise they would have to enter the labor market and for most that would mean 20 years wasted in the military.Same for cops and fireman. I know a disability lawyer who says firemen win almost 100% because "its NOT like they have transferable job skills ". Be aware that a large % of early retirees come from gov't and most of us are pretty useless in private industry in legal NON MERCENARY capacities.Anyone who's been to iraq know about the fagazi contract jobs they do.

As an end-note...that couple had a chiropractor practice. That's listed as in the top 10 LEAST stressful jobs..so we aren't exactly talking A type personality here .When one of the least stressful jobs feels like a rat race..you know SOMETHING IS UP!You would think they were stockbrokers are something..sheesh!

Only to the part where the interviewer asked them, "So wow, you wake up to this awesome view every morning?", and they both looked down and away and mumbled, "Yeah". That said, it doesn't mean one shouldn't try something new, but I wouldn't have too much hope that all of the suffering which comes with living a life is going to vanish. It always comes back, and quite soon, if in a different form.

If he was smart he would convince her to move to Colombia where there is no reciprocal agreement, unlike Costa Rica, with the US. Move all assets there and get residency. Then he will have the best chance of not getting raped when the marriage inevitably implodes. However I fear he is the adorer in that relationship and not that bright since he isn't playing a Martin guitar.

He doesn't have to move assets there.....divorce is based on place of residence. That being said, if he gets divorced he can THEN move his assets to whatever bank(Switzerland) he wants. As long as he leaves the country that gives the decree...he is safe. For example he cant get contempt of court in CR if he is living in FSU,SEA ,etc.
If they divorced in USA..he needs his assets sent out overseas and leave himself so he doesn't get arrested for contempt of court. He could just leave to another city in another state. Most large cities don't go around looking for guys hiding mariatal assets and are wanted on a bench warrant.Way it works is wife lawyer has to track down the state,city where husband ran off to. The court will then contact the court in the jurisdiction the husband is NOW living. But in a large city no one goes around gathering guys on a bench warrant...so unless the husband gets pulled over NO ONES the wiser.We have a few lawyers(Slubu?) he can confirm this...I am giving the Law enforcement angle.
100% safe just put the money in an account overseas and go live in a totally unrelated country....then there is NO enforcement capability!

I don't really understand the hate on this guy who took off to CR to relax for the next 40 years. Guy was financially successful and decided in his mid 30s that it wasn't the life for him. His particular lifestyle isn't exactly my dream life either but its sure as hell a lot closer than working in a 1st tier US city making slightly above average $$ at some 9-5 job where I get to travel 3 weeks a year.

Humans have only been doing the routine 9-5 thing for a few decades now so it makes perfect sense that some people struggle with it. Just like some of the brightest minds struggle in school, most of which never live up to their potential.

Great entertaining video,

I actually owned a 100 Gallon reef tank for like 3 years. Got rid of it, because I got tired of rebuilding the reef from scratch every time I went away for longer of the week because the house sitter kept over feeding the fishes, thus crashing the tank. The bigger the tank, the less maintenance it requires after initial set up. On a 250 gal reef, once property cycled after a month or so, it needs very little human intervention outside of changing 10% of the water a month. Cleaning algae off live rock for 8 hours is not part of regular maintenance regimen in reef tanks of that size.

You know what they say, if you lying about the small things....I don't believe for a minute that they are living in CR on 1300 a month. I do agree with them that you don't need shinny little trinkets to be happy.

The wife has a tight little body for an old broad. Would bang.

Costa Rica is pretty gringoed out, even on the more desolate Caribbean coast. I met tons of expats there just chillin hard. Some would have some kind of business, like a resto or coffee shop. But some didn't do shit. You can find whatever type of lifestyle comfort you're willing to pay for.

Hispanic immigrants have been doing this for decades. They bust their ass working and saving every penny. Then they set up some type of business back home that they are able to live off its income.

Its more doable than a lot of people think but it requires grinding and hard work for at least a good 10 years to do it. No going to the club, no Xbox one, no unnecessary expenses except Spam and toilet paper..

Live in an 1 bed room apartment with 5 or more comprandres and working 2 jobs for with only one day off for years.

Most Americans aren't built like that. Everybody wants to have what Lebron or some celebrity has but nobody wants to do the work to get there.

Next time you at a deli ordering a turkey and cheese sandwich, ask the guy whose making the sandwich to show you a picture of his house back at his country. You'll be surprised....
