But there's more. These things go in cycles.

The general public's perception of military peaked in the years after Sept. 11, 2001, when everyone needed to feel safe. People were picking up tabs on military dinners left and right, I remember.

The military stopped being in fashion sometime after Obama got elected. First, people got tired of endless wars that weren't defending anything but the very rich's money. They began to see soldiers more as pawns than heroes. Second, the constant reports of cops and federal agents "cracking down" on ordinary citizens made people weary, not welcoming, of authority figures. While the military didn't do this per se, they're being seen as part and parcel of an gov't that more and more oppressive.

The same thing happened in the 1960s. At the beginning of the decade, the soldier was an heroic figure. By 1970, he was a symbol of American imperialism.

You can either learn to game outside of your uniform, find military groupies (try Craigslist), or wait for the next "incident" when everyone loves soldiers again.

Damn! I should have addressed this under the "benefits" portion of my Air Force Lifestyle post.

The military has a stigma about it. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. It all depends on how you frame it.

For instance, telling a girl "I'm in the Army" sounds kind of lame. She'll immediately think you're a cog in a giant machine. Instead, what I used to do is tell them my job title and then add in later that I was in the Air Force as a surprise twist.

Like Deepdiver was posting--he wasn't telling chicks "I'm in the Navy." He was telling them "I'm a nuclear submariner". "I'm in the Navy" might give a layperson mental pictures of the often-mocked Navy dress uniforms. "Nuclear submariner" gives me this impression:



Whether that's accurate or not is irrelevant; it's all about how you frame your identity.

Proximity matters a lot. People that live around a military base or in a big military town will be so used to getting Marine Corps dick on the regular that you won't impress them.

Another big thing to consider is novelty. Girls from the suburbs that have never fucked a military guy may be intrigued by your identity and have romantic visions of WWII-era romances with heroic men. Complete bullshit of course but contrasted against what they're used to--sales managers, lawyers etc--a military guy brings the value of being something different that they may have fantasized about before.

Now that I'm a veteran and not active duty anymore, I still use the military to drop some bait with girls. At retail places if the cashier is cute I may casually ask if they give military discounts. Regardless if they do, about 50% will ask "what branch are you in?" just out of curiosity. I'll tell them "the best one." They'll grin and say "so which is that??"
"You tell me." and they usually guess Marine Corps for some reason. Sometimes they say Army. No matter the response I always give them an aghast look and tease their answer. Usually segways into a little chit-chat where they say shit like "my best friends bf is in the Navy blah blah blah" or "I was thinking about joining that Army to pay for school" blah blah".

Chicks still dig guys in the military, but there's a lot of negative stereotypes to avoid letting yourself fall into. Set yourself apart from being a small piece of the giant military machine.

What we really need is for China to attack us and get into a conventional war with another country. Military dudes pulling pussy would skyrocket.

This is great gaming advice not just for military, but beyond. How you frame what you do and who you are makes all the difference. It's the difference between "I work for a newspaper" (bleh) and "I'm an investigative reporter" (wow). Or "I work at the college" and "I'm a researcher."

And the teasing after he said "the best one" is something everyone should learn to do.

Marines/Middle East are two of my strongest cards in the deck, and I never drop those first. I utilize my lower cards, which all are still high, to escalate the game. Throwing down those two aces at the end is just icing on the cake. I sometimes wait till after sex, if its a liberal chick, to see her face after she just realized she'd fucked a jarhead/baby killer.

Concerning military insignia, I wear almost nothing with the EGA. It doesn't mean much anyways with so many posers sporting it now days. Used to a unique shirt from Iraq drew a lot of attention, and I'd use if too lazy to approach (hungover), but I get more value from dressing like a boss. Again, non-conformity is key, and chicks "sense" something about me that doesn't add up. Luring them into a solid conversation, then dropping the Marine/Iraq/Afghan bomb blows their curiosity out of the water. Like throwing out the fifth ace in a poker game, but no one calls cheating.

The biggest haters the military ever had was those that chose not to join. I never could understand why, as they should be happy someone else volunteers so the draft doesn't get reinstated. Ironically its those that never joined that will tell you all about the military through what they've heard.

I've watched the civilian market starting to catch onto vets since the late 90's, and now they actively seek us out. There was a big hiring event last weekend here where the WWE guys were there giving out free tickets, and showing support. The biggest names in the hiring sector go to those events with a no bullshit attitude to hire on the spot.

Panties don't drop for "Army Officer" because any jackass with a four year degree can be an army officer. A degree, thats the ONLY barrier to entry. Your job title, civilian or military, is only going to be impressive when it is something very few people can attain.

Theres a lot of jobs soldiers do that don't make the gina tingle. Theres a few that do. Don't get mad if you signed up as Human Resources Specialist (42A in the army) and your "combat experience" (not leaving the fob, getting purple hearts for papercuts) doesn't pull any weight.

I'm just relaying what recruiters/managers are saying and looking for. Right now the job market is coming back but instead of being able to put 4 sets of boots on ground, they can afford two. B/C of that they are looking for men that have proven themselves with shitty environments, work conditions, ect. When filling a position traveling 80%+ of the time w/ a turbulent, they want men who won't complain, not ole 40 hr week Snuffy.

Back on subject: Another thing I've seen that is the biggest problem with most military guys are entitlement issues and general toolbaggery.

Entitlement:

If I hear the "infantry soldiers gets paid 30k a year being deployed fighting in combat while basket ball player gets paid XX millions for playing a game" argument again, I'm going to bitch slap someone with the law of supply and demand. Being an infantry soldier is easy, the work is hard but becoming one is easy. Being a professional basketball player is hard as fuck and requires much more work and dedication than signing on a dotted line. A lot military guys have this same attitude and think they deserve more than they get.

This only gets worse as more and more people thank you for your service. It is a very nice gesture and much appreciated, but many people expect to get thanked.

General Toolbaggery: this is better served in list form

1. War stories - There is about 99% chance when you hear a guy telling a war story in public that it is absolute bullshit. Guys that have actually seen a decent amount of combat rarely discuss it with a regular person. Why? Because I don't want to sit around and explain the concepts of battle drills, support by fire, recon by fire, movement to contact, bounding overwatch ,RPG/PKM/RPK/EFP/IED/DBIED/HBIED/XXIED/249/240/Mah Deuce/Suppression/5s and 25s/CLS/Main Effort/Shotty breach/Vehicle Breach/Explosives breach/1,2,3,4 man/etc etc etc.

Most people that have seen combat drink to either forget or to relax and have a good time, not bring everything back. Even if I did want to talk about it, I would call a guy that was there with me, because most people just simply wouldn't understand what I was talking about

2. Wearing Uniforms in public - if your not on your way to work, on lunch, or on your way home, you should not be wearing a uniform in public. If you are, your a tool and everyone will know it.

3. Dog Tags - same as #2. If your at the bar with your dog tags hanging out of your shirt, your a tool and everyone will know it. If your at the beach and have your dog tags on, your a tool.

4. Trying to sound like SF - I've heard a few guys drop the "Im not allowed to talk about it" line before. This was said after they brought up the military themselves. Cool Rambo, cause I didn't want to hear it anyways.

5. "Wanna come back to the barracks" - barracks = dorms, don't church it up. Theres one type of girl that will go to the barracks, and thats the type you don't want to fuck around with (dont worry, your buddy will end up marrying her before a deployment)

6. You say hooah, oorah, hoorah, or ALL ABOARD (kidding, I don't know what sailors in their pretty bell bottoms say) in public. Hell, you shouldn't even say it in private.

Chicks dont dig the majority of soldiers because the majority of soldiers aren't worth digging. Most soldiers are average people that just signed on a line, since when has average been sexy?

I have a cigar friend who is a two tour Iraq and Afghan Army Ranger and has decided to stay for life as he loves being an on the ground warrior - he is built like a muscular WWE with some serious Ranger Tats and eff bombs like a grenade launcher.

He was the one who told me about calling in Nuke Sub Tomahawk missile close air support when pinned down by a shit load of Chechan Al Qaeda sympaticos - when the dust cleared no live chechans - which even I found surprising. He loves submariners - go figure.

Again he had a lethal combat level of alpha confidence that even made me look like a wimp by comparison (Hard to do).

LOL When you have that level of Alpha Prime confidence you really don't need any props.

This is the actual answer to the question in the thread title. Actually I'd argue it was precisely the Vietnam War when attitudes changed. Soldiers lost their prestige, and only partially recovered it. They're still honored in a patriotic kind of hand-waving way, but not in a personal "I know and love soldiers among my male relatives and friends" kind of way.

I had two friends in college who started dating shortly thereafter. One was a quiet, but alpha type guy (not frat boy, just confident). He was in ROTC and became a nuclear engineering officer serving on ballistic missile subs. She went into the peace corps. They continued the long distance relationship for several years. The entire time his military career was something she hated to talk about, and she would openly chide him about how he was contributing to the risk of nuclear warfare, etc.

When he decided to stay for a further year or so and teach at the nuke school, she broke up with him, partly for location reasons, but I think partly also because she didn't see his career as worthy of an educated and smart person.

On a much smaller scale browse dating sites around major military installations, and see how many chick profiles mention not dating military. Its because they loved just a few too many soldiers. Rode hard and put up wet. Players gonna play.

For all you real warriors come to the so called "liberal" northeast - you will be surprised at how Boston, NYC and New England women (Plenty of non LGBTs) love the way they feel in the arms of real Alpha Prime men and behave accordingly - the rest of the negs here are just bull shit really. Plenty of places in the Northeast to use your GI bill and finish a 4 Yr or graduate STEM degree and set yourself up as a preferred Corporate employee for life.

Speaking of military...last night I'm on a date and we're bouncing from the second venue, and as I have have my back turned, this P.O.S. tries swoop my girl while I'm closing my tab. I give him a death stare and lead her away to the the door and she hands me a business card the guy gave her. Fucker is some Major working at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In the end I still got the bang so I'm not that upset, but I feel this must punished somehow. It's not about the girl, it's the principle of the matter.

I believe impersonating someone is social vandalism just like tagging gang crap on city walls. It rude, probably illegal, and doing it to someone with high political connections might not be the smartest thing to do.
