An older guy I used to work with a few years ago claimed he was a street pimp (pipesmith as he called it) back in the 80s on the west side of Chicago. Just by talking to him, you knew at one point he was an OG through & through. He beat a heroin addiction after doing some time in the joint then turned his life around, got his associates degree. He currently works as a drug counselor for at-risk youth.

He had a lot of knowledge about women and life in general. I asked him once what he thought of men & women being at odds with each on a greater scale, whether it be via politics, feminism, etc.

His reply:

"Men and women should fly each other like eagles, but this has never been possible"

My question...is this possible? Was this ever possible before feminism?

At baseline, a large percentage of human beings simply cannot be trusted, male or female. Sometimes I think this forum forgets, there are a lot of male idiots (whether alpha or beta), and the fat epidemic includes fat men as well.

I thought it was a good quote and wondered what others thought.

Were things really that much better back in the day? Other guys were always trying to sarge back then as well.

Sounds like he successfully ran old man game on you. He made you think he was saying something profound, but in reality he was just spouting nonsensical gibberish.

This guy isn't Confucius. He's a former drug addict and street hustler.

The only lesson to be learned here is the importance of separating bullshit cloaked in profundity from actual wisdom.

When Bruce Lee says, "Be like water," there is wisdom there.

When this guy says, "Men and women should fly each other like eagles," there is nothing. It's just nonsense. It has no meaning.

What he meant with his quote was that men & women should generally work towards the betterment of the other, instead of being on opposite ends. Nothing really too profound about that. If you read "The Myth of Male Power", Warren Farrell essentially makes the same argument, except the politics have swayed everything against men.

Everyone seems to have this disillusioned idea that before feminism everything was great. There's no way that was possible. There were fat women back then too.

When I was growing up, me and my friends used to hang out downtown and by the waterfront where there were tons of hobos. The town where I grew up is a major stopping point for homeless people hitchiking back and forth from Santa Cruz to San Diego.

Anyway we hung out with these guys because they had some great stories and there wasn't much else to do. We'd give them free clothes and leftover food and they'd keep us entertained with stories.

But we knew it was all bullshit. Half of them would claim they were in a band with Bob Dylan and the other half claimed they were former millionaires that got screwed over by some woman or the government or aliens and shit.

Sounds like that's what's going on here.

Your friend needs to think of a better term for what he's trying to describe. Hell, even one that just makes sense. No organism of any kind "flies an eagle", or likely has ever done so since their evolution. Some organisms fly ON eagles, but probably nothing bigger than ticks or lice.

Maybe YOU can help him out here. Think of something catchy and suggest it to him. Probably best to avoid references to eagles or any other flying animals though.

Haha that's exactly it.

It shows the power of frame. We're a pretty cynical bunch, but an old man who embellishes his bullshit with enough excitement is enough to make us think he's about to say something profound and life changing. If he can do that to us for a moment, you can pull that on a chick long enough to get the bang.

I'm gonna tell you my opinion on this issue having thought about it for the last 3 minutes.

Technology, social conditioning and government safety nets tinkered with the natural order and have caused men and women to both have no need for each other. It's like domesticating animals. You can argue it extended their lifespan and they are content having everything provided for them now, but you can't argue that it stripped away their true nature. Everything is so safe and well provided in 1st world society. It's hard to "work toward the betterment of each other" when there really isn't much you can offer one another. Japan is arguably the safest and technologically advanced country in the world and look what that did to love.

I'd bet if you went to a remote village somewhere in the eastern hemisphere you could find couples who loved each other.
