When you come to FSU(Ukraine in particular) yoy will notice that you get more eye contact from a girl In the street when she is with her BF. I will then Fuck her all over with my eyes and she reciprocates. The boyfriend is aware but doesn't care.

Ukrainian chicks are always holding out for something better, there's not enough men with cash to go around, and they need to be fucked.

Also, many girls are unlikely to put "single" on VK, they probably just leave that bit blank

There is also an "Actively Searching" category, which in my experience is mostly fake profiles. Not all of them are fake of course, but the first few thousand that will come up when you do a search probably are. But, "Actively Searching" works well for friends of friends, as they are more likely to be legit.

I find the fake profiles to be dominant in any category(possibly more so in the actively searching section), also at least half of the girls profile picture just when browsing looks fake/professional I usually ignore the profiles who have model like profile pictures.

Samo - agree that a lot of profiles look 'unreal', and there are a lot of unreal/fakers.
But bear in mind that doing 'photosets' is a part of life/culture in Russia/Ukraine... Some of my contacts in vk also have the model-alike pics and they are real.
To check whether profiles are real, I look at their wall to see what they've posted...

On first messages - this is pretty much my strategy:
As I don't speak russian, I select english.

Betravel is absolutely correct, they might appear to be fake photos, but FSU chicks are crazy about photography and take it very seriously.

There are not so many fake profiles, and they are easy to spot.

just basics will do - some pics with yourself, some pics from travelling.
Add some books, music and movies in your interests. they love litterature a lot more than western europeans. Almost all of them are crazy about reading, and i mean not only paperback romance stories for on the beach, but classics etc. (eg Palahniuk from 'fight club' & Beigbeder (french author who wrote 'au secours, pardon', which is a must read for anyone who likes young Russian girls in my opinion - not really recommended to add that book to your favourites on vk )
Some hobbies eg travelling and countries visited etc...

Basically - look at it the other way around: would I answer a message from a girl without any info and pics? Highly likely not..
would I answer a message from a profile with only some hot model-alike pics? yes i might answer, but would try to find out whether it's a scam.

This is a great idea, i registered yesterday and discovered a whole bunch of EE chicks in my city. Beautifull! I am going to message them all and see what sticks.

Lately, I have tried a different approach to get to talk to chicks on VK.

Instead of using the search functionality to find out girls within a desired age range in a certain city, I do the following:

1. I upload some photos of the city I live in. Most photos include monuments, bridges, parks, sunsets. Once in a while, I include a photo of myself with one of my girls, to signal high status.
2. Then, I geo-tag the photos, i.e., I check the map and pin the photo to the location where it was taken.
3. Fortunately, VK allows you to see the photos taken by other VK users close to the location to which you pinned your photo! Then, just sample a bunch of those photos, and when you find a good one, take a look at the profile of the user who added that photo. If it's a cute girl, then click on the light-blue heart to "like" (+1) her photo. She'll be notified. If she clicks on some of your photos to "like" them, assume that is a IOI. You can then send her a message, asking her some dumb stuff like "did you like city XYZ?" and you have plausible deniability.

Completely agree VK is much more 'dater friendly' (or is it stalker-friendly ). But we'll see how a few stone cold approaches work and how my Moscow address is viewed.

BTW, I've 'accidentally' friended a couple girls (including one who I really did accidentally friend - unfortunately she was like a 5, but she immediately responded with a "??"). No responses yet from the hotter girls I found way down the page so we'll see. Oh BTW I'm doing this straight up as I've got my real name and background on VK, but I figure what the hell it's Russia. I haven't used vk for girls in quite a few months, I'm planning a trip to Russia in the near future and just opened a new account with a couple of shitty photos, anyone got any pointers for me? I'm learning Russian already so I don't even search for girls who speak English and I'm looking at non tourist cities (e.g not St Petersburg or Moscow).
I added like 50 girls already and I forgot how hard it is to make conversation with these girls, at the moment I'm just asking standard things like asking about themselves and etc and so far its going nowhere at all. As I said I'm a bit rusty and would appreciate some pointers how to get some quick rapport and some meet ups ready for my trip.

Sorry for being captain obvious here, but it's getting more and more difficult to keep contact with the ones who have 1000+ friends on vk. Less is better in this aspect.

Also personally I just try to search girl based on common interests you can share. For example I am into athletic girls, so I've used search engine to find the ones putting various sports in "activity" or "interest" section and/or girls who have their Degrees related to sports. Percentage of replies was still low, but it was still a start. I rarely also had a problem with fake profiles that way, but I have to admit I am very patient and being in Warsaw and having ability to travel to Lviv makes possible for me to go slower on them and not rush things.

What the hell do you saying when they ask 'знакомы?'? This means basically do we know each other. I have tried just writing no and that goes nowhere, I tried writing then they either say they don't want to or they say come on and then I have no idea what to say next as asking about their hobbies, life etc. standard stuff seems to do nothing and seems a waste of time as they always give 1 word answers.
This is definitely much worse than I remember when I first start using vk around 3 years ago.

I created a profile and added a ton of good pictures.

I messaged about 25 girls in 2 major Russian cities. I got a reply for every 5th message. Often more for a quick 'how are you' than for a richer opener.

The reception was super bitchy though. This is easily the harshest response I received anywhere on an online dating site. OKC has been much nicer. From 250 messages (you can send 25 per day only), and a number of conversations, not a single date came through.

Waste of time if you ask me.

I searched for girls with the newest profile and filtered for 'Single'/ Online. Clicked on hot girls only.

I'm just curious if there are sites very similar to VK in other regions, such as Asia or Latin America, or in fact, really, any other region, or is this type of a website structure an FSU-only thing? And if so, it's interesting why. It resembles old MySpace.
