Yes it is, walking down the streets of Bogota, Medellin or Cali will give a guy a sore neck for sure, plenty of talent in Colombia, especially in the higher end areas, you''ll see lots of hotties. The down side is that Colombia, as far as I can tell, doesn't have the same level of Gringo hunters, or Bricheras as Peru seems to have. Although the women are hotter in Colombia, it appears that they're a lot easier, especially to SNL in Peru. Considering your limited time on the ground and lack of Spanish, I think you made the right choice Fisto.

I'm hoping someone on here can do some sort of comparison sheet between Colombia and Peru or more specifically, Bogota and Lima. As Tully Mars pointed out, Colin at Expat Chronicles did a pretty good job but he didn't elaborate much on the ease of picking up between the two.

Didn't InternationalPlayboy already do the Colombia vs. Peru comparison? If I remember correctly he said that Colombia had much hotter women and overall he was unimpressed with Peru, although I do think the guy lives in Miami which can really make your standards high. I spent a month in Colombia in May, and yes the girls there are much hotter, but your right I also found that you have to be pretty solid in your spanish skills to communicate with the girls in Bogota, and Medellin. I went there being a little rusty in my spanish, and was having a hard time daygaming. For some reason a higher percentage of the girls in Lima speak good level of English, I usually never have issues communicating there; also much more opened to being approached by a white guy. On a short trip I would def take Lima over Bogota or Medellin.

Yeah, this is pretty much the dream. With a passive income stream of 2-3k a month it's doable. The big costs are the intercontinental flights.

Changing continents every 2 months is going to dramatically increase your budget. Same thing goes for changing cities every month or two.

Sadly, flights between SEA and Latam (particularly SA) are painfully expensive. In fact, south america has expensive flights in general. Having a decent base in america is good, plus a decent accountant to consult with on occasion.

There are a LOT of follow on expenses when you go to a new destination trans-continental-- USA->Eur; USA->SEA; sometimes USA->SA.

1) $1500 plane ticket
2) $50 transport to airport, food in restaurants in transit
3) On Arrival $50 transport and restaurants ( compared to eating in your apartment)
4) Buying a vehicle or spending more money learning layout and using taxis instead of public transport in new location $50-$2000
5) Deposit on new Apartment $600, or hotels extra expense
6) Money setting up apartment with cooking stuff you can't carry on plane - $100
7) Paying premiums while finding best places to buy food. $150
8) New Clothes for different climate $150

So all this could (if you need a vehicle where you're going)
total $4600.

I couldn't figure out why I was spending 5K to go to a new location as my money drained away.

Thinking in retrospect, I think if I pick two locations I like , I can leverage the knowledge I have so when I go to that location later, I don't have to spend money learning the good spots and what's a good deal for an apartment.

I love NorCal--if I could have a foreign woman with me.
I just need a winter refuge-- not that badly, it's not really bad here, there's skiing in the Sierras.

IKE: I am having similar traveling considerations as you, Fisto, and possibly a few other guys on the RVF (regarding finding a regional location to stay for up to six months at a time and to rotate locations). Possibly, I would do 4-6 month rotations, and maybe have a trip back to the USA about every 6 months.

And, maybe averaging between 2 to 3k per month would be possible to incorporate all expenses, but we would average in the plane ticket and other estimates to the overall 4-6 month period of time. I'm gonna use 5 months as a frame of reference, just for the sake that it is in the middle of 4-6 months.

My approximate anticipated expenses would be as follows:


1) Travel costs:

a) Initial RT plane ticket $1,000 - I figure if you book in advance, and you make it round trip then you can maybe travel within that area - but start and end in one area, such as Lima - or Bankok - or Serbia, wherever you can get a decent price. Another possibility would be purchasing an around the world ticket, but that would be more expensive b/c it would include bouncing from continent to continent within the 3-15 stops.

b) Travel to a new location within the Region, about every 5-7 weeks - $300 - I am of the belief that probably, it would be good to move every 5-7 weeks for a few reasons including that the people in the area get to know you, and could affect picking up opportunities but also safety, since these are 3rd world destinations and my want to target you for economic reasons. Stay long enough to get discounted rent, but not so long that the Locals think that you are long term... no locals will really know your leaving date.

c) Other Travel within the region - $1,000 - little side trips, from time to time and for excitement.

d) daily transportation $500 - I am going to assume no car b/c cars are usually an extra luxury that is generally more expense than its utility - though maybe a scooter may be helpful. Certainly, this expense is going to vary by location and by lifestyle choice, but I am estimating about $25 per week.

2) a) regular lodging - $4,000 - if we are staying in locations for more than 4 weeks, we should be able to find places that have lodging for less than $700 per month (including internet and utilities), but I have added a little extra for transitional issues, as described by IKE.

b) side trip lodging - $1000 - these may end up being double lodging costs, depending on logistics, and I have estimated 4 nights per month at $50 per night. Of course this could be adjusted based on lifestyle choices.

3) food $2,000 - Generally inexpensive food can be found in these locations, and I like to eat pretty good food (and accordingly, I am considering $100 per week). Maybe i would have a combination of my own cooking, restaurant and possibly hiring someone to cook for me a couple times a week.

4) cleaning and laundry (and possibly cooking service) - $1000 - I am considering about $50 per week for this, though of course may vary depending on circumstances, including whether it is included in rent

5) entertainment - $2,500 - I am really not very much into clubbing and night life; however, I estimate $500 a month for entertainment because I may want to partake in some nightlife, scuba diving or some outdoor recreation activity, which may involve me paying some of the expenses for girls, too. No I am not planning any P4P.

6) gym membership - $150 – maybe $30 per month… and some variation?

7) personal hygiene items and prescription drugs - $200 - possibly averaging about $40 per month for various items

8) clothing - $150 - I am not much into expensive clothing, but I may need to buy items from time to time, even to replace items in my wardrobe or what I may have not brought.

9) household items - $150 – maybe this would vary somewhat and may be offset in other areas and even possible resale after the trip.

10) Misc. $150 – there is always going to be some items that never really thought about.

@Jay- Nice breakdown. I think it fairly accurate. $2500 is about what players need in the 3rd world, especially moving around. It's cheaper though when you get into a routine. One of the guys is living between $1.5-$2K down in the DR, and that includes an expensive apartment. That saves a lot on transportation as he's in "city center". I was surprised how little Fistdolt was getting away with in the Manila. By his report I know I can get by like a Chief in Cebu Province on $2.5K. Probably even under $2K, as transportation there is real cheap if you know how to work it.

The breakdown is good for guys to see what they need and set a goal.

I would want to strive to live within a budget, so anything that I would save by living below $3K per month would go towards saving and investment (like a rainy day fund). On the other hand, a guy could start with considering a five month period of time, and even add $2,000 to the total expected costs (for emergency fund), and still at about $3K per month average.

Amended Total - adding in emergency fund of $2,000 for trip: I added this up and it is $15,100 / 5 months = $3,020 per month

Of course, if one stays for longer periods of time (longer than 5 months), there may be some savings from getting to know the lay of the land, and finding the bargains. On the other hand, if one stays longer periods, these longer term guys may find expenses as well by feeling more psychological needs to splurge now and again by blowing money on some extravaganza or trip to a more expensive location nearby in the Region.

I attempted to incorporate "stake money;" however, you may be correct that I have not accounted enough for the quantity of those kinds of expenses (I think that is what IKE was attempting to do in his above post description).

We can add $1 to 2K for that stake money as well, and in that regard, I personally, would only add $1K b/c I thought that I had already somewhat accounted for those kinds of costs, but just in case, I will add it. Accordingly:

I'll use a credit card for the emergency fund, which cuts down on the total bill. Further costs can be lowered by:

1. Using airline miles for the initial ticket if you have them.

2. Taking ground transportation when available.

3. Cooking most of your meals, and shopping like the locals.

4. Scratch the gym membership, and use resistance bands/bodyweight exercises.

5. Stock your apartment with some booze and prime there before going out.

6. Build a harem which cuts down on going out. Utilize online game also.

7. Wash and iron your own clothes.

8. Find hobbies, or you'll get bored and spend too much.

From now on I'm going to stay on a budget. So after airfare and 1st month stake money, I can get away with $2500 per month or less. Looking within a few months to cash in on some W. Texas oil. A friend is down there making $26 hr and working 100 hrs week. 6 moths of that can put me black and take off for a whole year, with lots left over.

This is what I've found. When you arrive somewhere, there are expenses that you can neither foresee, or get out of!!

If someone quotes a crazy price for something where you already live, you can just defer the expense.

When I arrived in Ukraine, the crazy landlord just demanded an extra $200 that was not in the previous deal.

To tell her fuck off meant going and getting a hotel that would have blown even more than the $200 she was holding me up for.

That was $200 over rational calculations gone in one minute. A NUMBER of things happen like that when you're new.

Or this: Ukraine's power is fucked up and I blew up two hard drives and a power supply while I was there. Shipping drives to the US ($80) for warranty and buying a new laptop adaptor(100) $180.

Then I bought a voltage regulator for about $90. $270

So that was $470 for two things I just couldn't have easily foreseen. In only one month-- nothing to do with food and shelter.

Unless someone like me told you about these things beforehand LOL. Like now. (If you are doing any heavy computer stuff, get a voltage regulator. There weren't many blackouts, but voltage dips were bad-- and invisible-- and fuck your drives and adaptors up.)

That moving around shit gets expensive.

If I had stayed in Ukraine, my hard drives and power supplies probably would have been OK after that. But every time you go somewhere new you learn something else that you need to buy , medical expenses etc.
