Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
There's been some chatter lately about the Washington Redskins name being racist and/or defaming Native Americans. In the past, this "controversy" might have made the news for a day or two then gradually faded away.

Now, you have a couple of prominent sports writers, Peter King and Christine Brennan, who have said they will no longer refer to the team as "REDSKINS."

If no outrage can be found, one can be constructed.

I would bet that the complainers don't even know one person of Native American descent.

I guess they should make the state of Oklahoma change its name too...

From wikipedia
The state's name is derived from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people"

As for the Skins, it's only a matter of time before the name gets changed. Within this decade. Mark my words.

The complainers are just people pissing on tradition.

The Washington Bullets became the Mystics but I don't remember that being a big issue back then? I guess today it would be a big issue.

This debate has been going on for as long as I can remember.

In this case though, the shitlibs do have a point. While there are a lot of sports teams with native american names, they are usually names of tribes, etc.

"Redskin" is a straight up racial slur.

To make a point about this - in every Madden video game where you're allowed to create a team, I always make a team called the "New York Niggers" and take it online. Peoples reactions are priceless.

I'm an 8th Cherokee, and I don't give a fuck.

But then again, I don't even like Native Americans, so what do I know?

Is it ok to be openly racist against Natives? I better check into the Gawker media thread and double check if they're a protected class or not....

Natives in the United States score a 6.7 on the Privilege Scale, right in between crippled lesbian wops (6.4) and heteronormative Guatamalen members of the 1% (6.8).

In Canada, which runs on the metric microaggression scale, Natives are estimated to experience an average of 32 daily KiloAggresions.

RE: Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
The name is retarded to me. They got an image of a native with a feather in its head and the name "redskins."

That would be like having an image of a black slave or a minstrel character and calling the team "blackskins."

Time to retire that shit.

I remember when the name of the Washington Bullets was changed to the Washington Wizards. It was during a time when DC was dangerous as fuck (murder capital).

If people were riled up about that, then the skins name is definitely a legitimate issue.

I have not studied the various lawsuits about this or know the reasons as to why they have all failed so far. If someone can enlighten me on the merits of those cases, please do.

RE: Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
I don't think it's progressive white liberals that are pushing for the name change as Roosh seems to imply, from everything I've heard and read it's Native Americans that are very upset about the name. I took a Native American studies class in college and the professor was as close to 100% Lakota as you can get, and he was very angry about the name Washington Redskins and went into a long rant about it.

Apparently to Native American people it's very offensive and the equivalent of calling a black person a "nigger." I grew up a Redskins fan and changing would kind of suck from the fans perspective, but if it is that racist and offensive and Native Americans I think a name change should be considered, I certainly wouldn't protest it, I can appreciate how an ethnic group wouldn't want to be offended much like Tuth points out with his ball cap pic, N.Y. Jews or Chinese in S.F. would be up in arms about that.

RE: Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
The Cleveland Indians are slowly phasing out the cartoon Indian and replacing it with its old school "C" Logo. Name change won't happen because well, "Indians" is not a proper term for Native Americans but its short of a slur like redskins is.

The NBA with the bullets name change follows the change in the win nature of the league. David Stern in his day would change things and rules over to appease anybody and always tried to steer the NBA from being specifically mired in urban violence even though it cashed in on that urban street image 100%. The Wizards have a shitty logo and have returned back to the classic Bullets colour scheme that was popular back in the day. So PC that they couldn't even change the name to the "Gunners" or something like that and tie it to a military theme which IMO could of passed and would of ended the links towards street violence and the old name

The Skins have a iconic and wealthy brand name. All the pressure can mount on the Skins but unless these groups are taking away money from the Skins they won't do shit. They have polled Native Americans on this subject many times and none give a fuck about the name and until they do Redskins ownership will never do anything.

Let's make a deal with the SWPL-tard progressive thought police:

We change the name of the Redskins to something less offensive if we can get rid of all the hot pink incorporated into the uniforms that every team wears during the month of October.

RE: Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
Note that it's highly ironic that the person responsible for the Pinkification of the NFL in October is also the owner of the Redskins, Mr. Daniel Snyder....who by the way also made part of his fortune selling mammography machines!

DON'T YOU KNOW, WE MUST SPREAD AWAREEEEEENNNNEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!

EDIT - Mea culpa...I did not recall that correctly...I got mixed up with Michael Chertoff pushing the Backscanner machines. Snyder Communications though did make part of their fortune marketing medical devices, but I can't find any direct links to Snyder and mammogram machine manufacturers.

Nevertheless, I still think his wife's campaign to pinkify the NFL every October is of far more aesthetic concern than the quasi-racist name of his Football team.

RE: Should the Washington Redskins Change Name?
Abe Pollin, the then owner of the Bullets, didn't change the name to the Wizards because of the gun violence in DC. It was because of his friendship with former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Rabin was assassinated in 1995, and it was that event that prompted Pollin to get rid of the Bullets name:

"...Abe was also friends with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin; the two met when Rabin was Israel’s ambassador to the United States in the 1970s. The pair would play tennis together whenever they had time. After an assassin’s bullet killed the Israeli prime minister in 1995, Abe was so moved by the tragedy that he changed the name of his NBA franchise, the Washington Bullets, to the Washington Wizards.

"My friend Rabin was shot in the back," Pollin told The Washington Post, when he returned from the funeral in Israel. "The name Bullets for a sports team is no longer appropriate. That is more important than the history of the franchise."

http://www.aipac.org/NearEastReport/2009...ollin.html

The part that most stories about the Redskins name that most journalists leave out is that the original owner of the Redskins, George Preston Marshall, was an avowed racist, that resisted integration. He refused to have blacks on his team. They were the last to accept blacks on their roster. So yeah...Redskins is a racist moniker. It's easy to say others are being too sensitive when an insult isn't directed at you. I won't fault the team's ownership for keeping the name, but people should know the history behind it.

"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."

As far as I know, the local Inuit community up in Canada hasn't made much of a stink over my city's CFL team, the Edmonton Eskimos. The word Eskimo is considered by many to be a derogatory term meaning "eater of raw meat" and its more politically correct to say Inuit, I have no idea what that means.

That's just speculation. Pollin was friends with Rabin and changed the name of the team shortly after his death, but he had already spoken publicly before Rabin's death about his considering changing the team name due to the high levels of gun deaths in DC.
