Is any of you guys going to this job fair? If anyone in Edmonton wants to go message me so we can go together, it's a 2 hour drive

Work is seriously picking up. Like it typically does.

If you were thinking of coming out here, now is your best chance. Outfits are ramping up for the winter season.

For everything.

Yes...that also.

Definitely picking up. When I was on the field the other day, there's a radio ad from Savanna Drilling calling for floorhands, derrickhands and drillers, which means that the rigs are looking for workers now. So now's a good time to make the move since companies are looking to hire for the busy season ahead.

Hey guys, I land in E-town on Monday night and Im delighted to hear about the work situation! Mixed emotions, mostly excited and optimistic but quietly nervous about this new start. This thread has been a massive help and inspiration in my decision to make the move and Id just like to say a big cheers to everyone who contributed. Can't wait to get started in Alberta!

I'd be interested in going yes. Have no car however (yet?).

Winter time gear up. Sept to December work picks up. Mid December to February it's pretty slow. Now is a good time to move.

LMAO Scotia .. you are the "moses" leading us to the promised land. I'm in Hamilton waiting to get gov help for an AZ.As soon as I have 3k I'll be out there in a heartbeat!!

Posted this on Reality-Check.ca. Havent gotten a single response...so I'll try here. And, yes, I've read both threads in their entirety.

Quote:First post - been reading the thread and the thread on Roosh and I am looking for some more information on jobs for Mechanical Engineers....but Camp positions.

I'm currently in Ontario, but my fiancee is in Edmonton working. I want to leave HVAC and get into Oil and Gas somehow. I don't mind doing the labour work for a short while, but I can't see myself making a future out of it. I've been noticing people mentioning MWD as a career path and I notice two companies are advertising for MWD field engineers for drilling rigs. Can anyone shed some light on this? I can't seem to find a concrete pay scale for MWD and I can only assume that its not the most steady of work seeing as drilling isn't year round...

anything is appreciated.

Thanks!

I've seen a couple of postings, but not many for MWD trainees...but there's not much info out there.

Simple solution, DUMP THE GIRL and see if you STILL want to move to Edmonton! Worse thing any man can do is uproot himself for the sake of a woman! The only exception is if she makes 2-3 times what you make and is hot! TWO for TWO. One out of the two won't cut it. Tongue Aside from that if you really want to move to Alberta, be flexible with your choice of occupation...as long as it pays well and is legal. Smile HVAC...plumbing and pipefitting are related to that. Plenty of fab shops in Nisku and Leduc area looking for those skills.

Quick update: I've been here for a week now, microscopic village near Edmonton, sending CV's all over the place for MWD (mostly online applications, which is very time-consuming BTW) and have gotten exactly 0 replies so far. If you get *anything* in a camp, take it, as it's quite coveted and everyone and their dog wants a camp job right now..

Long-term goal is MWD stuff, as I have an Electronics Engineering Technology degree, seems to fit well.
I'll just keep pushing. There's a job fair in McMurray the 9-10, but getting there is impossible, as there's nowhere whatsoever to sleep.
Kdog 路 2013-09-04 20:10:00 路 #1637
You can apply online anywhere like any other sucker, and it's not going to get you anywhere. You're here, so hit the pavement, show you are serious and get results.

If were only that simple, she's hot and makes good coin. I'm more so interested in a camp position or a MWD position as well. I've decided to drive out to Edmonton for the first week of October.

So I'll be doing my courses and applying like mad then. I've got family to take care of so I making the big bucks is essential and this is the quickest and most logical way of doing so....

Pipefitters make $40-$60 an hour in fab shops. Keep all options open. Floorhands make $30 an hour plus $180 a day hazard pay depending on the rig mud they use when drilling and the rig they are working on. Class 1 truck drivers pull in $1000 a day parking and transporting trailers in Ft. Mac. There's more than one way to earn a dollar. If your goal is cash, keep all options open. Even Irishman started as a leasehand before getting into MWD. Get on, perform, and take it from there.

P.S. The harder you work for money, the more the government takes from you in taxes. Have an investment strategy. Real estate, small business.

Another thing, if you're planning on getting married...why in the world are you seeking work that will keep you away from home for extended periods of time? That's rather counter intuitive. I meet engineers, project managers who picked work that allowed them to be home more often than not. Money is easy to make. The key is deciding what type of lifestyle you're aiming for?

Now how does that go hand in hand with the fact that supposedly some even hire ex-cons without doing a background check because they are desperate for employees ?

This is simply a means to an end. I understand what you are saying, but working for gross 70K a year doesn't hatch it anymore. Money is plentiful in engineering. But in my line of Engineering (HVAC) which I've done for 6 years now, I've reached my ceiling and the ceiling gets lower and lower each year. Unfortunately, it's not very easy to move laterally in engineering if you don't have base experience in that specific faction.

Like I mentioned previously, I want to make cash, a good deal of it, in a short term. Pay off my moms mortgage and invest in something for my lady and I. She understands what it's all about (it was her suggestion to actually do this) and if it doesn't work in sands for me, I'll return to the 9 to 5 out in Edmonton. I have have several buddies making the move this fall so it makes it even easier for me to do.

Well the more you make in income the more gets taxed, simple as that. And if you make 70K and she makes more than you...combined income counts for something, man. If you don't know what to do with 70K...dude, 120K, 250K isn't going to matter either. It's called the Parkinson's Effect.

Why in the world are you paying your mother's mortgage? She had a headstart in life and YOU, the child, are paying HER mortgage? Does that make any sense to you? The financial load you take is your choice for sure, my opinion, it's not a smart move to be paying your parent's mortgage nor is it a smart move to be the higher income earner in a marriage. As a man, you will seriously get f*cked when she decides she wants something new. Trust, if you take a field job and you're gone 21 days of the month, and she's making money and is as hot as you say...she will find something new.

As for reaching your cap rate in your field as an engineer...this is usually when it's time to work as a consultant or start your own firm.

I had dinner last year with a group of engineers who capped out, you know what they did? Started their own firm, got their first round of million dollar investments. They loved what they did and kept on doing it.

Flexpipe. Started by 6 engineers. I worked there for a month and saw off the last of the six engineers who started the whole operation.

Keep on chasing employment income or start building your own brand. No job will pay you what you're worth. They'll pay you enough to keep you from quitting.

You plan on taking courses...so that equates you'll be starting from the bottom. Entry level. Be physically ready for what comes at you at the worksite. You're leaving HVAC Engineering for industrial work. Get ready to use your body.

P.S., welders make $75-100 an hour in Ft. Mac.

Heavy equipment operators make $250 000 a year driving those big trucks for Suncor and Syncrude. Course at Keyano College. 6 weeks I think.

LMAO at all of this. I appreciate *edit* some of the advice, but no thanks. Family is family, I take care of mine; not everyone has the same up-comings or good fortune as everyone else. I'll leave it at that. As for the woman, I'm not worried about what she does, that's her decision, I know her well enough to know what I plan on doing is the right thing. Oh and for the physicality of the job, before the mundane desk job, I used to lift heavy things and people for an education. My goals are to further my qualifications (and education) you can't do that without money. I'm a sales engineer, I've worked in Consulting in the past and I can't stand it. The HVAC engineering sales market is saturated and money is very thin these days. Oil and Gas is huge and if I have to get my hands dirty to get into it, somehow, I will gladly do so.

With all that said, I'll be out in Edmonton by the latest Mid-October. I was contemplating driving out from Toronto, but I don't trust my vehicle to do the long drive, nor do I want to do that drive alone. I rather ship it down the line. I have use of a vehicle while in AB, is it imperative that I have my own vehicle or can I get by with having a car part-time for a month or so?

You make 70K a year, and don't have a reliable vehicle? Wow! Just plain wow. "LMAO at all of this." Well, keep on laughing then. If you don't have a reliable car, in my opinion, you have no business paying your mother's mortgage. Usually that's how folks end up broke. Taking care of other people who should be taking care of themselves...hmm, which would explain your current situation of not having a reliable car, yet making 70K a year. Dodgy

Paying mortgages is what renting out rooms is for. Why doesn't she have tenants paying down the mortgage? Like I said prior. If you don't know what to do with 70K, a 100K, 250K isn't gonna matter. You'll be in the same predicament. Stretching, instead of growing. Banana

And now you don't care what SHE, (fiancee) does, it's her choice...well then, why are you making future plans with this woman! Seriously? That's a contradiction.

You got the advice of a lot of people on this forum. If your mindset is "can't get ahead without money." and "I'll disregard advice to work in a fab shop, or learn to drive heavy equipment, start my own engineering firm, or keep all my options open," Well, dude, good luck to you. You were disingenuous with posting that you are willing to get your hands dirty. If you don't know how to leverage what you have...well, like I said, good luck. Smile

There's always that one person on each forum who's the (sel-proclaimed) know it all. You seem to be that person. Like I said, circumstances and situations are what they are; I have zero need to provide you with personal details, so I'll leave it there. I live a comfortable life, I would like to live an exceptionally comfortable life. This is not for you to question, as I never asked you to help me decide how to live. Again, thanks.....but no thanks.

Back to my original query - MWD, does anyone have any additional information on this, specific to companies based in and around Edmonton. I would like to either fly or drive out at the beginning of October, but from what it seems there aren't many job postings or opportunities ATM. I don't think I'd have an issue with getting either a green drilling position or a trainee MWD job, it's more so the leads. I do have a list of drilling companies that I plan on applying to, more info is always good though.

Also, I'd like to start working ASAP - so I will take the first decent opportunity presented (whether it be drilling, service or even a decent paying PM/Purchasing/Engineering position in O&G). I'd hope to have my WHMIS, PST, H2S Alive and First Aid within my first week and start working very shortly there after - how realistic is that? I've read that hiring is ramping up, but does that mean that so is work? I rather work for a few more weeks here and collect a guaranteed cheque than have to wait around and do lesser paying work for 2 weeks to a month in Edmonton until I get "called up".

Thanks.

I'd like to chip in regarding supporting family/parents.

RossTan,
What you are saying about not supporting family members that might make sense from a white/western mentality. However, in some cultures, family ties are very strong if not and it is the responsibility of the kids, specially the elder son to support the parents. While you may have a hard time understanding that as you may not be from such a culture, that's understandable. However, some other people who are from different cultural background, it's quite normal if not the norm. Yeah I realize it may not make much sense from a western or white mentality, but that's how things are.

Regarding the girlfriend issue, again, it depends on the cultural background of the girl and her up bringing. If he is white/western or raised in a western environment, then what you say may apply and there would be ground to be geniunely concerned about her slutting it up behind your back specially if you are away for work for extended periods of time. However, if the girl is from a conservative background or a recent implant from a traditional background where she has had a solid upbringing in a religious environment then the chances of her slutting it up behind your back are infinitely less. Again, it's all matter of perspective.

Of course I could be totally wrong and shane could be from a white/western background. But just wanted to provide a different cultural perspective that many specially white guys are not too familiar with.

All the best shane and let us know how it goes in your move to AB. All the best to all the guys who have made the move or are about to make this life changing move. I will be among you guys soon too. Smile
