I've switched to krill oil myself. Dave Asprey mentioned the benefits of krill oil, specifically in evening out the ratio's of omega 6's to omega 3's in our bodies.

Cod liver oil was a staple of mine while boxing. I never ended up having the joint pain that a lot of the other fighters suffered through at times.

I would prefer to be using seal oil, but the assholes in this country refuse to let it be sold.

I use Twinlab's liquid Norwegian cod liver oil. Great price for the amount of dha/epa in it, compared to fish oil pills. I take a sip of it each time I eat something.

Also, I use a brand of fish oil called Garden of Life. It's sold in Sprout's grocery stores in CA. I used get the "fish burps" after taking other brands. Especially the pills. Fish Burps are disgusting. The Garden of Life brand is orange flavored and doesn't give the Fish Burps.

I don't think that brand really matters too much. Liquid is preferable over caps, just make sure your getting a high eph/dha content. Always keep the fish oil liquid/tabs in the fridge. I take 1 tablespoon of high strength fish oil everyday , out of all of the supplements that I take I rate fish oil and avc the highest. You can see and feel the differences they make to your health and body.

Yep, the stuff that I get comes in orange or strawberry flavour. It does help it go down easier. For the bro's from the UK I recommend myprotein.com, they have the best quality fish oil for the price.

I looked on the labels and they are similar except Cod Liver Oil has Vitamin D and Vitamin A.

I live in sunny climates so I have no issues with Vitamin D and I heard Vitamin A is harmful in high doses.

I just bought another bottle of Fish Oil (Carlson's) but I was wonder your guys take.

If you are in the uk try out thw myprotein.com brand. I use it myself and it's the highest strength I have found, also the cheapest. At 1 tbsp per day you'll be able to feel and see the difference.

This is by far the best fish oil out there.

What happens to lower quality fish oils that are unstable is that the fats get rancid. This is why bad fish oils "repeat" and have a fishy aftertaste. Not so with Eskimo-3, which is incredibly stable (that's why they use it in clinical studies). Also, the liquid form is much, much better than softgels.

1 teaspoon of this a day is all you need.

Yes, definitely. The stability properties of Eskimo-3 are an order of magnitude better than other fish oils, including Carlson. It's not cheap but it's more than worth it. With fats/oils, stability is what makes all the difference.

Yeah, you're more often than not better off buying this stuff online.

@ Kona, I realize you wrote the above snip-its over a year ago (and I had not even heard of RVF, then... he he he), and I largely agree with a lot of your overall conclusion, except for maybe slightly different reasons.

1) I think Mercury is a concern - except most of the time the selenium value in the fish off-sets the mercury - so in many instance the mercury is not a big deal.

2) I think that there are a lot of problems with mercury and aluminum in vaccines - I do not think those claims about autism from immunizations are off base, but that is a separate discussion and separate issue from whether or not one should eat fish.

@ Kona : I agree with your overall conclusion to eat fish and don't need to pay that much attention to mercury, unless the fish is low in selenium and if you eat a lot of the fish without somehow getting selenium in your system. Ultimately the benefits of eating fish outweigh the negatives of the mercury.

@ GMan: IMHO: The jury does not seem to be in, exactly, regarding whether supplementing with fish oil, versus actually eating fish, is actually beneficial or not, and part of the debates about the benefits have to do with questions of oxidation (how long these things may sit on the shelf and also oxidation in our bodies), which I have seen some discussion that there are greater potentials for oxidation with tablet forms of fish oil as compared with the kinds of oils in the liquid in the bottle.

In essence, I personally attempt to eat fish on a regular basis in order to increase my omega 3 to 6 ratio (which also can be helpful by cutting out certain vegetable and industrial oils - so we may not need as much Omega 3 if we cut out some of the omega 6s) and I supplement by taking flavored (lemon and cherry) cod liver oil in a bottle b/c i am more worried about how long the tablet forms of fish oil may have been in the tablets and possibly exposed to light.

There's a lot of footage here in this video, and I would not recommend the first 20 minutes b/c it seems like a lot of advertising; however, when you get to about minute 25 and thereafter, they begin to get into an interesting nutrition discussion - which has a lot of good ideas - whether you agree or not, Asprey seems to know quite a bit about what he is talking, especially he seems to be in some regards of the paleo inclination.

Also, I would not say there is a lot of bang for the buck in the video regarding nutrition b/c the information is somewhat scattered throughout the more than 2 hours of video, and I became a little sceptical at approximately 1hour 34 minutes, when Asprey indicated that he takes about 40 pills per day, but he used to take take 187 pills a day. I become a lot more sceptical when people begin to believe that in order to get nutrition and health that we should take pills rather than finding natural food sources to achieve such.. .....

if you read Asprey's bio, he spent $250,000 to bio engineer himself and/or to study various ways to improve himself and to take supplements.

In any event, Asprey may be a little bit of an outlier regarding prescribing normal and natural methods.. in terms of whether what he has done will work for you... or whether he is trying to sell you something that may be a little much.. or not quite right.

I do agree with Katatonic that there is quite a bit of good information scattered through the video... but my inclinations would be figuring out ways to achieve nutrition as naturally as possible... and accordingly, consider the various recommendations within the video with a grain of salt.

If you are concerned about quality, one thing I always recommend to my patients when purchasing supplements is to look for the label that says "USP Verified."

USP = United States Pharmacopeia

When you see this:



It means that the USP has verified that this particular dietary supplement contains the amount of ingredient that it says it has, that it has no contaminants, and that it will actually breakdown and be absorbed by the body. So if it says 1000mg of fish oil, you know that you are getting 1000mg of fish oil without any contaminants.

An old fart recommended this to me, it's not fish oil but I believe it falls in the same boat with the same benefits. It took about a week and half before I felt the benefits, it sort of feels like a clear headed high you would get from drugs but without the disadvantages I wish it was offered in pill form because the taste is pretty rough!
