Most meals have very little protein. If you are aiming to take in 150 or more grams per day, it can be very difficult. The grilled pork is good, but super fatty. I can only eat so many grilled chicken legs/thighs or fish per day. The grilled chicken is great, but it is thighs/legs with the skin on, so it has a lot of fat and is super greasy as well.

I love grilled chicken with som tom and sticky rice. I ate it yesterday and it was delicious. Unfortunately I was shitting half of the night. It was freshly grilled, so not sure why. There is two grilled chicken stands by my condo. I got sick from one yesterday, and the other one chops up their cooked chicken with the same knife, and on the same cutting board, as they do their raw pork and chicken. So I'm down from 2 to 0 grilled chicken stands, which fucking sucks because as you said, it's delicious.

My main problem with Thai food though is just that I am sick of rice. Thai food is diverse, but you eat rice with everything, so it isn't all that diverse. If I try to eat Thai food with no rice or noodles I would never get full.

I disagree about beef being everywhere. Thais don't eat much beef at all, and it is expensive here. There is a lot of duck around, but it is generally always either 5 or 6 small slices of duck with noodles, or with rice. Duck larb is fantastic, but not so easy to find.

Aside from grilled fish or chicken, most Thai meals are low on protein and high in fat or carbs. kai diow is great, but that is just eggs deep fried in very questionable oil and thrown over a bed of white rice. Not healthy for you at all. Just like in most of the world outside of the rest, Thai meals are a little bit of protein with a lot of rice or vegetables.

Anyways, I think BB is right that Thai food is diverse, but it isn't a good option for someone looking for a high protein/lower carb diet.

That's my rant for the day hah.

I will say that a lot of you guys are far more active than me too so you're probably feeling the protein strain way more and suffering more if you skip the rice. I actually don't even eat a ton for a guy with all the weight I carry on me. I can eat one plate of laarb and I'm fine, for instance, especially if I do have some rice with it.

But as far as meat being skimped, I didn't have much of a problem with it in Chiang Mai at all - in Samui, I'll give you that it was a bit tougher, and part of me wants to say that since the economy has gotten worse they've begun skimping on the meat portions a lot. Maybe it's the same in bkk as samui, or maybe the whole country has been skimping these past couple years.

As far as beef goes, yes, it's harder to find, but I've always felt a lot of expats made it seem harder to find than it actually was. I've been to a lot of local spots in the North that even serve beef larb. A good steak is definitely a hard one to get a hold of it, but so-so ones can be found - I like the one they cook on a flatiron with the pepper/garlic sauce. Not everywhere but one you find it it's a good one to go back to. I even ate raw beef in the marketplace with a Thai chef once - maybe a bad idea? - maybe you could just go buy a bunch to cook up at home.

I also like that dried steak with kafir lime leaves dish that comes from the Isaan region -kind of like jerky. A lot of different dried beef dishes come from the Isaan region and they're usually served pretty small but I find they make a good snack. Actually just had that beef and lime leaf dish last night here in Cambodia so seems big here too. Also had some beef sauteed with ants, which was surprisingly tasty.

I've gone low carb and high protein in the country but I usually just skip rice and noodles and double up on the meat and veggies. So I might pay more but you always have to pay more to eat healthy. If I was back home in the states I'd be having to skip bread and rice and pasta to do a diet like that, so I guess I just never saw how it's any more restrictive than such a diet in the west.

I do find that in the west they often have "carb-alternatives" or whatever, but I don't usually eat that type of stuff anyways.

In the north I often got chicken breasts and not just thighs and legs. I don't mind skin or fat on my meat and often make sure to eat it as I think it's high in nutrients - same with organ meats. But I'm hardly ripped or in shape so what do I know. LOL I even always saw the barbecued chicken itself as so varied - it always tastes different and the chef usually has their own special spicy sauce recipe - I skip the sweet and spicy one they give foreigners and ask for the "nam jim."

As for the shits, do you think it was the meat or the papaya salad? I usually assume it's the spices messing with my stomach when that happens, and I just accept it as part of the territory. I could see it being a bitch if you're working out though.

I find when eating with Thai friends, they often just order food at the marketplace late night and we lay out out a spread and it's almost all different types of meat, fish and pork (I actually like pork better than other meats), sometimes beef, prawns, and whatnot - with maybe one soup and one veggie dish. And sometimes friend chicken, yeah, but I eat it. Sometimes they do a lot of barbecuing too where we just sit and eat meat all night and barely pick at rice. Thais don't seem to eat many carbs at all when drinking though.

All rambling aside, I'm guessing maybe I just don't have a lot of the same observations because I'm not as health-conscious.

A lot of the apartments guys rent don't come with a kitchen. Especially studios in the less than $500/month range. Also people who are setting up for a month or so just don't like/want to cook.

I like to cook and would generally eat at home probably 80% of my meals. But I definitely spent more money by eating at home compared with guys who can eat street food all the time.

If you want quality meats and produce you have to shop at expensive grocery stores like Villa Market or the supermarkets at malls like Emporium/terminal 21/Paragon etc... which the prices are like shopping at whole foods in the US.

Eating a Paleo/low carb diet in Bangkok was fairly expensive. Eggs where not so expensive so I would eat a dozen a day as that was the best value for protein. Certain items that must be imported are expensive like Turkey and beef (usually Australian).

It is possible to get meat and produce from cheaper places like Big C and Tesco but when you see the quality you will be very disappointed.

In SEA, it's quite common for apartments to come without a kitchen. Most single people just don't cook for themselves because it's so easy to grab a meal out.

Been in the depths of it and that's just how people roll unless they really have loot - and once people have loot they really don't want to work for anything. That said, you can get a house for about 150 bucks a month with a semi-kitchen and outfit it as you see fit. Just depends on how long you want to commit and how much shit you want to start buying to pimp out your little kitchen.

I mean, for me I couldn't see being much happier than having some traditional thai girl sprung on you and filling your kitchen up with dank food every night. Not that easy to make that happen but most westerners will never bother. Always nice to know it's there if you want it, but in thailand non-married people don't think too much about kitchens.

For the most part it's not the norm.

I know the story you're talking about. The South-African family was walking around Patong at 2am (mistake #1), the father got into a fight with a tuk-tuk driver (big mistake #2) and the driver left and came back with some friends and beat them all up. Obviously getting your buddies to gang up on a family, beating up the wife and kids, is incredibly cowardly from the Western perspective, but that shit happens to farang here. If you understand the culture even a little and just avoid any situation that involves a Thai losing face that should prevent 99% of all problems in Thailand.

I had an LMR with a girl off Thai Friendly the first night I got her over to my place. She wasn't even really down for kissing, just wanted to hang out, watch a movie.

To be fair though, every one of these recent stories sounds like death/injury could have been avoided if these people had followed the 2 Golden Rules of Thailand:

1. Never be caught with drugs
2. Never get into an argument/fight with a Thai

The taxi driver in this story said the taxi had turned a corner and got caught in a traffic jam - the American passenger blamed the taxi driver saying he'd done it on purpose, got out, and threw his empty coffee cup back at the driver and refused to pay the fair to that point. This all sounds highly plausible from the taxi driver's POV.

Then the driver took a sword out of his car (they all carry knives/guns/er... samurai swords) to threaten the American. What did the American do? When he and his 27 year old son left the venue, the band were waiting outside, they got into an argument/fight (Golden Rule 2) and the father ended up getting stabbed in the stomach with a mental spike and dying.

Did these two Americans bring it upon themselves? 100%.

Thailand is basically really fucking safe - all you have to do is follow rules 1+2 and show some respect to the Thai people and how they do things. Be a quiet observer, don't be some brash, loud twat, acting like you own the place.

It's easy to make it sound like the other persons fault when he's already been hacked to death by a machete. You think the taxi driver is going to say "I tried to rip him off because he's a farang, and I hate farang, so when he got out and refused to pay I chased him down and hacked him up with a machete so I wouldn't lose face by being ripped off by a dirty, rich farang."

Only two people know what really happened, and one of them is dead.

Your advice is correct, avoid confrontation with Thais. They are cowards. They don't fight one on one, not even against other Thais. Another piece of advice is that they will lie to save face in many situations, so don't trust their word.

To an extent I agree with you. With cases like the guy who got stabbed with the metal spike though, you also should take into consideration that Thais are notorious for lying to make themselves look better or to get out of trouble - not to mention that most people are going to lie if there's any possibility of lessening a murder charge. I'm not 100% sold on the band's version of the story - no reason to really doubt it either, just not taking it without question.

95% of the time you will be fine if you don't act like a twat. Very true. That said, as with anything, there are always exceptions, and there are people who do get victimized and abused for no reason here too.

Just a couple examples. One old Swedish guy I met told me a story about a car driving by him really closely and the mirror knocking into his arm. The Thai must have thought he hit his car on purpose and proceeded to stop and fire off some shots in his general direction. There are definitely loose cannons out here - Thai guys kill each other over pointless shit quite often.

Another farang told me a story about standing in a bar once and a girl caught his eye and seemed to be smiling at him so he lifted his glass, etc. Her and her friends left after a bit and then suddenly a motorbike pulled up with a bruiser Thai guy and the girl. The guy got off the bike and kicked this feeble older white guy in the chest and sat there yelling at him, throwing a couple more kicks at his head while he was on the ground. Of course none of the staff intervened and this guy still doesn't understand what happened.

And what about that Russian recently who went on a date with a Thai woman who told him the guy living with her was her brother...only to have her husband knock on his apartment door later and put a gun to his head? You even hear stories about people who get attacked and go to fight off their attacker only to have uninvolved Thais jump them. Then there was the guy who got acid thrown in his face after getting off the train in Bangkok - luckily it was a weak acid and he managed to get through it with no disfigurement - just temporarily messed up his eyes.

The reason I bring these instances up is that it's very common for farangs who live here to hear any story about another farang being physically assaulted or murdered and their instant reflex is to say that the guy must have done something wrong. Well, that's not always true - and I certainly don't just take a Thai's word for it either as they rationalize some weird shit. I've definitely heard my share of stories about completely unprovoked violence and assuming all victims must have done something wrong is kind of a dangerous sentiment, in my opinion.

I can certainly understand it but I've tried to remove it from my mind a bit because bad things do happen to good people here sometimes too. Sometimes it's a cultural misunderstanding. Other times they just had the misfortune of running into the wrong Thai. And then there's plain old racism too.

We're all here in same boat and I know there are a lot of idiot farangs, but it would be nice to see a bit more solidarity in the expat community, in my honest opinion - as this can be a dangerous place to live for a white boy sometimes. Would be nice to at least know that if you got fucked over people weren't going to just automatically assume you were asking for it.

I find it interesting how Westerners who move abroad often demonize each other and adopt an "every man for himself" attitude. Immigrants who come from non-Western countries, on the other hand, cling to each other and watch one another's backs almost to a fault. I've even caught myself doing that. Just something to think about.

Kind of hard to say as there are so many more older guys here. I don't think too many Thais are all too keen to tangle one-on-one with a young, scrappy farang guy - even though they're pretty damn tough themselves - but they usually have backup so they wouldn't necessarily need to anyways.

An old Aussie guy did tell me a story about seeing some Thais pull that ratpacking shit with a group of in-shape American military boys and the soldiers mopped the floor with them. He said it was kind of nice to see after watching so many foreigners get jumped over the years.

Similar thing happened at Spicy a month or two back, except one of the Thai guys pulled out a gun and shot a few people. Think 1 or 2 died, and a couple of innocent by standards got shot.

Thai guy said something a long the lines of he only shot them because he and his friends were losing the fight.
