Zimmerman case
Do you guys think he will get off? If so, what will be the reaction from the black community? Whether the verdict is guilty or innocent, I think this might get ugly on the streets.

He should get off.

No idea if he will.

I personally think it will only get ugly on the streets if he gets off.

I don't think white people are as emotionally invested as African Americans (especially considering he's not even white...).

He'll get off, but will need to leave the country. There will be a lot of brothers looking to inflict street justice on him.

Might go check out some riots in Sanford. Is there any way to get the most bang for my buck here? Where will the riots be the best?

RE: Zimmerman case
There haven't been any major urban riots in America for quite some time. The last big one was in Cincinnati in 2001.

Even if there was a riot, I believe that with Obama as president, all he'd have to do is go on TV and it will calm things down.

So I doubt we'll see any significant public response to the verdict either way. It got much more public attention when it first happened. Now it's just fodder for Nancy Grace and Headline News watchers.

But that doesn't mean there won't be any individual or small-scale acts of violence in response to it. Last year a 78 year old man in Ohio was beaten by a bunch of black teenagers who said they did it for Trayvon Martin.

I think he should get time. We need to send a message that it's not right to kill someone in a one-on-one street fight. Who here hasn't either kicked someone's ass or had their ass kicked? If all fights ended like this then half the country would be dead. Think about it.

Not saying the guy should serve life, but he provoked the incident by following Trevon down a dark street and not identifying himself and then aggressively questioning him. From Trevon's perspective, Zimmerman likely seemed a threat.

Not to change my original subject... but Zimmerman is one fat fuck. It looks like he gained a good 50 lbs since the shooting.

I've generally been on the side of Zimmerman with this but the way you've laid it out here you have a good point and I'd say you're probably right.

I do think the insistence that it was a racist act and the cries for blood across the nation are going a bit too far. He probably does deserve to do time, but I don't think he deserves the whole book, as you mentioned. To me it seems like Trevon looked suspicious and Zimmerman over-reacted - given the experiences of the neighborhood and Trevon's aggressive response it's at least partly understandable how one thing led to another.

At the end of the day, it was a bad situation that went as horrible as possible. I agree - some type of punishment would make sense but nothing close to life.

Bear in mind I haven't even been watching the case and am basing my opinion on what I've picked up through the news and here and there online, so I could very well be talking out my ass.

RE: Zimmerman case
Bottom line, Zimmerman isn't a peace officer, and had no right to confront Martin at all. To say Martin's response was what prompted the altercation that led to his death is faulty, because for all he knew, Zimmerman was a threat to him. After all, he was just strolling home after a routine trip to the store for some Skittles and Ice Tea. Some other ordinary guy has no right to attempt to question or detain him, and it's HIS right to defend himself against that. Zimmerman was instructed by law enforcement to leave him alone. He took it upon himself to engage him anyway. Stand My Ground wasn't enacted so that guys can instigate an altercation, then claim they were standing their ground and defending themselves to justify shooting someone.

We have no idea or real evidence as to what the altercation was. That is enough for reasonable doubt and Zimmerman should walk free.

RE: Zimmerman case
While the death of Trayvon Martin is tragic, and the actions of Zimmerman unintelligent, I don't believe Zimmerman should or will be found guilty.

To be convicted of 2nd degree murder, he has to be convicted beyond a reasonable doubt that he he had the intention of killing him (although not premeditated). I doubt Zimmerman wanted to kill him, and I think the jury will agree.

RE: Zimmerman case
While Martin may have thought Zimmerman was a threat because Zimmerman "aggressively questioned" him, neither law nor morality gives Martin the right to deal with that subjective feeling by getting on top of Zimmerman and pounding his head against the pavement.

As for what Zimmerman did at that point, well, we'll see what the jury thinks. Generally you have to be in fear of death or serious bodily injury before you can use deadly force in self defense. Which has always seemed odd to me. So if I have a gun (which I don't), and a guy comes at me with his fists, I have to take the beating? I potentially have to let him get control of me, and then just hope that his intentions are good? That doesn't make sense to me.

RE: Zimmerman case
George Zimmerman is the personification of coward. A grown man can now get his ass beat(lightly) in a fight HE instigates with a skinny teenager, then claim self defense after he fumbles around with a gun he doesn't know how to use and kills somebody. Say what you will about Trevon, he didnt deserve to die.

RE: Zimmerman case
Well looks like murder to me. . .following someone down the street, and then starting a fight and killing them would get called murder no matter the race. . .I have no idea why this trial has gone on for so long, should have been an open and shut case. A lot of you guys here were saying the same thing in one of the other threads about starting fights and why you shouldn't (one blow to the head of someone can put you in jail for life if they die etc etc) I don't know why this case is any different.

RE: Zimmerman case
There is no such bullshit as "Well, Zimmerman is 60% guilty and Martin is 40% guilty, so zimmerman should get some jail time."

This is a second degree murder trial. Is he guilty of second degree murder? It was pretty obvious that this guy was not a foaming racist with a big ego and a history of gunning minorities down.

What scares me is that enough people are low intelligence enough to believe our judicial system could bear a successful second degree charge. If you cannot comprehend this about our legal system, you have serious misunderstanding of how the law works, or you are not very intelligent, or you are a socialist. Or all three.

You forgot the "following someone down the street"

In that case, YOU ARE the aggressor, ESPECIALLY if you have a gun.

How is this so hard to understand?

I don't know how "guy A with a GUN following someone down the street, and starting shit with someone and then shooting that person" is fair.

But whatever world you live in, I'm glad I'm far away from that.

following someone is not being an aggressor. questioning someone on what they are doing is not an act of aggression.
