I don't think this is correct, I remember seeing standing head kicks in Pride FC events. Why start boxing vs mma threads? Boxing and the training methods the sport developed are a crucial part of mma.

Ha.

Way not to make your point.

Come on homeboy, you were at "Buffalo Wild Wings".

What did you expect, a Ciprianis crowd?

Jesus, I have never even seen a Buffalo Wild Wings in my life let alone stepped into one.

If I did step into one, I would murder myself for being so low-end and weesh.

Hell, the only reason I even know that Buffalo Wild Wings exists is because it's stock has performed well.

HA
Good for you, homeboy.

No need to get angry.

That would be like someone saying, "I watched the Polo matches at The Olive Garden in Zanesville, OH and I am shocked that the crowd was trashy and low end! Shocked! I mean golly, I was really surprised!"

I mean what did you expect?

That is a reasonable point to make isn't it?

Yeah it was a bit of hyperbole. Headkicks were few and far between. Crocop was really the one to really show that headkicks can work regularly. Before him, the general consensus was that head kicks were mostly ineffective and you were just asking to get taken down. Crocop's contribution to striking in MMA was almost as important as Maurice Smith's (Maurice showed that if you have good takedown defense and leg kicks, you can nullify an elite wrestler). Now that everybody has worked on wrestling defense, and of course their striking, the standup aspect of MMA has improved and you see guys going for things regularly that were thought to be very risky before.

Why would I be angry? You're entitled to feel like you should kill yourself for stepping into a chain restaurant that, by your own estimation, is doing good business. You don't smuggle gems, sell dope, or whatever it is you do to make money, for nothing right? Live your life and be happy.

Anybody watching Bellator tonight? The card looks weak, but I haven't seen Babalu fight in a minute, so I'll tune in.

MMA is a different ball game. It takes time to build and hone the skills necessary for a well-rounded game. Boxers and Muay Thai fighters rarely have these.

What I want to know is, why have so many talented kick boxers transitioned into successful MMA careers but we don't see the same thing happening with pure boxers?

Cro Cop, Sergei Kharitonov, Vovchanchyn, Pedro Rizzo, Overeem, Foupa-Pokum, Cyrille Diabate all started in kickboxing styles IIRC

That trash fan base turns me off.
(why do you make fun of trekkies? because they got that nerdy look and weird behavior)

Can you imagine going to a bar filled with UFC fans?

I think those people also loves Nascar, WWE and will enjoy listening to Kid rock's All summer long.

I think I am Gay but I'd rather hangout in a classical concert hall with appropriately dressed white people who uses proper languages.

Boxing has a certain class to it, even looking at the history of boxing. It makes you want to put on a nice suit and light up a cigar if you're going to a boxing event.

MMA, might as well get ready to yell out WHOOOO like you're Ric Flair and bring out your favorite coozie.

Boxing obviously focuses on hands and hands alone. Kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters are more well rounded however most do not usually have the same skill with their hands. If you're going to be an MMA fighter you can't only rely on your hands and thus I believe kickboxers, more specifically Muay Thai practitioners, have an edge as they've trained with elbows, knees, feet and hands.

I covered a couple of Pride events many years ago and got to hang out behind the scenes. Saw CroCop / Silva /
Kharitonov (awesome) / Big Nog / Vovchanchyn / Sakuraba and several others doing battle. The Japanese really, truly know how to do an event. There are several things I can't stand about the UFC - Bruce Buffer...this guy is the most irritating part of the entire show. His brother's a twat too, I've seen this firsthand. Joe Rogan - his schtick has gotten old. They need to bring in some completely new announcers.

I heard somewhere that Joe Rogan won't ever get 'cut' from the UFC because he was working for peanuts back when it looked like UFC wouldn't survive. At least JR is a BB and competed in TKD! If they would bring in commentator who is an ex-fighter with a striking, wrestling background and axe Goldberg (zero martial arts exp) then I might consider NOT torrenting UFC for once.

I used to be a fan of Rogan's and while I appreciate his passion and dedication to the martial arts, his podcast and announcing have become stale.

BTW - love the avatar. I'm a fan of the Erowid site.

Sylvia didn't even see that left hook to his chin.

No one in the crowd even saw it. A lot of people gotta put that shit in slow mo just to see what happened.

RE: Boxers That Want To Try MMA And Muay Thai
Anytime a sport's fan base is made up of mostly age 16-35 males, there's going to be a huge douche bag element.

Other sports like baseball, football, and the like has that element as well but they also have the families, children, and female fans to balance it out. MMA doesn't have that unfortunately and because of the nature of the sport I don't think it will attract that element. I'm not just talking about the violence but also about the fact that unlike with sport teams, there's no city to get behind. Females are mostly into sports not for the sport itself but because of the social element. They want to feel like they are part of something bigger and that's what you get with team sports - you can pretend that you somehow had a hand when the Philadelphia Eagles winning a game if you are from Philly even if you did exactly nothing.

I'm a HUGE mma fan and have attended both UFC events and smaller local shows and I will be the first to tell you that fan base is pretty low class. At least here in America and Brazil - as people said the Japanese MMA audience is a whole another story.

Anderson Silva and Jon Jones Nominated for Best Fighter ESPY; Can Either Beat Floyd Mayweather?

UFC champions Anderson Silva and Jon Jones have been nominated for ESPN’s prestigious ESPY Award for “Best Fighter” for the second consecutive year.

But can either of them edge out last year’s winner, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is also nominated again this year?

Rounding out the 2013 nominees are Mayweather’s fellow boxers Danny Garcia and Canelo Alvarez.

Silva (33-4) has not lost in the Octagon since making his UFC debut in 2006. He has won 16 consecutive UFC bouts, has held the middleweight championship since late 2006, and set numerous other records.

He defeated Stephan Bonnar and Chael Sonnen last year, but hasn’t fought yet in 2013. Silva is slated to defend his belt against Chris Weidman at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas.

Jones (18-1) has just one blemish on his record, a highly debated disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in late 2009. He has since won nine consecutive bouts, including victories over the likes of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, and Chael Sonnen.

The 2013 ESPY nominees were announced Thursday. Voting is available at ESPN.com until July 17 at 9 p.m. ET, at which time the awards will be handed out on ESPN.
