Now that Snoop Lion (aka Snoop Dogg) is doing reggae, I wonder what your thoughts are on his new music venture? His new album is below.





It is ok if you like reggae, but I can't help but wonder what happened to the old Snoop. His first ablum, Doggystyle, was an instant classic. It you need a refresher on it, it is below.





After this album, the next rap albums he release were ok, but nothing ever again matched Doggystlye. In a way, I am happy he is at least still in the music game...however, a part of me wishes he would have gone back to the drawing board and tried to release a great rap album.

Well it's Snoop Dogg !!

... whether he crosses over to Reggae, Rock, Metal or even Country he will always garner attention and sell albums.

I listened to a few of his songs from his new reggae album more out of curiosity than anything and have to say he's absolutely horrible.

His Patois sounds try hard and this whole Snoop Lion thing seems more of a mid-life crisis than anything.

I think Snoop Dogg's whole identity was based around West Coast Gangsta' rap which is pretty much dead now.( Sad really)

When his whole persona is based upon a certain image which is outdated & not cool anymore it hurts and looking for another image to latch onto and revolve your life around seems like the best logical solution.

^I think this is the reason he was not able to make a real comback. You are right, West Coast Gansta Rap died, so his g-funk style is now outdated. Still, it is sad to see how far he has fallen. I still listen to Doggystyle every once and a while, and it is amazing. Damn shame.

Snoop went from gangsta rap to more old-school influenced R&B. Now this is the next reinvention. Cats in the rap game know that as they get into their 30s and approach 40, the can't do the same thing they were doing when they first dropped. It isn't so much a particular genre has died out, but they can't be credible anymore at that age rapping about those things. If you can't go into writing/producing, if you're going to remain a performer/recording artist, you have to reinvent.

Wack reggae album and he's never been that good of a rapper. There's lots of better west coats gangsta rappers but he just got lucky and blew up. More of an image than musician really.

I remember hearing somewhere that The DOC ghost wrote a lot of those two albums for him. Not sure the validity of the claim.

But it is not too far fetched since I still could probably recite all his lyrics from both those albums off the top of my head and can't remember a single lyric he has dropped since then.

He did have somewhat of a style that was very approachable, I mean, even white girls could repeat his choruses.

That is one of the reasons he blew up so heavy VS a more complicated lyricist like Nas or AZ.

Supposedly, he jacked Mr. 3-2's whole flow and ran with it. 3-2 and The Convicts were fucking around with Death Row back in the day. He does sound a lot like him if you listen to 3-2's old groups. I know he stole that "really doe" he always says so I wouldn't be surprised if he just took the whole package.
