He found her appearance to be agreeable:

In the printed WP magazine (my parents subscription), there was a different photo. I was shocked they got together, cuz the guy was very goofy and beta looking. Now this makes sense.

I know it sounds like he got friendzoned, but this is how these prudish grad-student types (she's the only grad student, but they both look like they could be) do things. Super incremental, sterile, and safe. He may not smash till like the 8th date, but they'll have babies together. These chicks invariably have low sex drives or really strong impulse control (delayed-gratification abilities). This is part of why they thrive in the academic environment.

I can't count how many girls like this I've scared away, at various stages of the process, by putting my foot on the game gas pedal just a little bit. Sometimes I've out-maneuvered them with subtly tight game--and smashed on the first date as a consequence--but they quickly disappear after that out of guilt or nervousness.

This is all to say that this guy played this one correctly (as far as it goes).

I'd smash, but wouldn't put any effort into dating her or introducing her to my friends. I hate that accusatory look you get. You know that 'you've done better' or 'it's been a rough few weeks, hasn't it?', they give you. At best I can use her body as a secret shame lay in times of desperation.
