Ingredients. Most store-bought stuff is loaded with apples.

Ideally you juice in a bunch of greens and just use a little apple to sweeten stuff like kale, spinach, lettuce, etc.

Store-bought juices are marketed towards the American consumer's sweet tooth. Most have a lot of apples and not much greens.

Yeah, figured. And apparently some of them are boiled ('pasteurized'). I just found this hilarious takedown of Naked Juice, and just how shitty it is.

Quote:Well, Naked Juice was kind enough to list the amounts of broccoli and other greens in a bottle of Green Machine.
So, how much broccoli is actually in there? I mean, there's a huge floret on the bottle. It must be in there somewhere.
The answer is 100 mg. That's .1 gram of broccoli.
...
You are consuming 2.25 small paperclips worth of greens per bottle of Green Machine.
Congratulations.

RE: Health: Juicing
This forum needs it's own juice recipe.

Presently, I'm working with the following:

(VitaMix)

1 x Cucumber
2 x Celery stalks
~3 x red kale bussels
1 x thumb size piece of ginger
1 x half lemon (peeled)
1 x leaf swiss chard
1 x handful of spinach
1 x tablespoon of cacao powder
1 squeeze of hemp oil or the BioGenesis fish oil (tastes like lemon pie)

If I double the amount of Kale, I'll add stevia or the men's green lend from Innate Response Formulas

What's everyone else working with?

Its kind of funny how I use to think Naked Juice (esp Green Machine) was healthy....Before reading MikeCF's explanation, I thought juicing was all hookey and gonna make a load of people into diabetics.

Edit- 2 paperclips of broccoli. Hahah. Thats shameful marketing.

The weird thing is I have changed what I juice dramatically over the past 3 months. I feel wired 24/7 nowadays. No coffee. Only some green tea and my weight lifting is through the roof. I'll be depressed if I don't stack another 10 lbs this year

RE: Health: Juicing
Juicing has raised my testosterone levels. I went from 341 to 521.
My diet(paleo) has stayed pretty much the same and so have my exercise levels. I do olympic style lifts with short crossfit metcons.
The only thing really added is the juice. I usually do at least one 24oz juice a day. I feel like the juicing has raised my overall health as well. I sleep and recover from workouts now a lot better.

I believe it. My libido raises significantly when I drink carrot cucumber beet juice a few days in a row.

So I started juicing a while ago. I haven't noticed anything special so far apart from my skin looking fresher and healthier. :-)

Hair and skin health are biomarkers of overall health. One of the best ways to look inside yourself is to monitor how the outside of yourself looks.

Sick people have bad skin and people with good skin are rarely sick.

Do pimples/acne count? For instance, would a person with acne count as a sick person?

Acne is caused by a pathological bacteria in the stomach.

That's why antibiotics clear up acne (excluding the cystic stuff).

I am not generally in favor of a "juice cleanse," as that has gimmicky connotations and it's far more important to have solid, mostly good health habits. (Think the 80/20 rule. You don't need to be totally "cleansed" but you should be 80% clean.)

That said, people who have gone on juice cleanses reported clearing of acne.

It's probably because the bacteria is starved or because the bacteria the eats green juice is fed and crowds out the bad bacteria.

A girl I got into juicing had the eczema on her hands mostly clear up. It was still there to some extent, but when her juicer burned out the eczema came back between the time they filled her warranty.

Hamilton Beach is also good on their warranty. I am a couple months into my second one but I already feel the looming burnout when putting through the leafy greens.

I am going to pick this one up I think. I want to get more out of the kale, parsley and others like wheatgrass. The Breville BREBJS600XL "Juice Fountian Crush" Slow Juicer.

^ That's the Breville Crush.

If you like how that works, consider getting an Omega VRT350. The Breville is a copycat of the Omega. Also, the Omega has a longer warranty.

In terms of skin....A friend of mine gets free haircare products from his stylist.

He went in and she was raving about how good his skin looked.

He told her about juicing, she started juicing, and her skin cleared up. Now she hooks him up.

Here's some info:

Juicing and sun tanning
Juicing and wrinkles
Juicing makes you more attractive.

Pretty trippy.

Hmm, the Breville warranty might be deceptive. 10 years on the motor. What does that even mean? Are bearings part of the motor?

The Omega seems like a better buy, based on the warranty alone. Looks like they might both come from the same factory!

RE: Health: Juicing
What are you juicing and in what amounts? Some plants have very strong chemical defenses (that becomes inactive after heating to a certain point when cooked), and should not be consumed in large quantities raw.

I am trying to remember which ones I've had bad experience with.... I think beet greens (the leaves) was one. Then there was this other greenish/purple leafy vegetable that I don't know the name of. Generally, most of the chemical defenses are concentrated in the leaves (that's what the insects usually eat).

You might be using to many fruits?

If your consuming a large amount of fruit in a juice/smoothie your body will take a really large sugar hit.

Try to prep your stomach first with a glass of warm lemon water or even better a glass of Watermelon juice. Then proceed to a juice and try to use more vegetables like carrots or cucumber.

RE: Health: Juicing
Gonna update my juicing habits here:

I've moved to juicing daily. Sometimes drinking up to a quart a day. I've gotten somewhat addicted. Here's my current recipe that makes you feel great and it tastes great:

2 quarts packed baby red kale
2 quarts packed spinach
2 cups packed parsley
6 sprigs mint
6 sprigs of cilantro
3 apples
3 inch segment of ginger
1 whole head of celery
1 cucumber
1/4 C lime juice

This produces just under 2 quarts of juice. I drink it first thing in the morning and throughout the day. It's refreshing and energizing.

This is pure health bro-science on my part, but when your body detoxes you typically feel like shit. I've done legit 7-14 day cleanses and those first 2-3 days I felt awful. Nausea, dizziness, etc. From everything I've read it's normal and part of the cleansing process.

Detox reaction from juicing. Very common.

I thought it was all b.s. until I started juicing. I had the largest bowel movements of my life. Made no sense, since so much of my diet was from juice.

But my bowels were releasing all sorts of built up gunk that would have poisoned my bodies if the juices weren't there to "clean up" the toxins.

Most of us had bodies poisoned by pollution, GMO foods, bad diet, and water (which is laced with drugs from people peeing out birth control pills, etc.).

When you're juicing, the toxins start to get released into the bloodstream.

More info here: Liver Detoxing Juices.

RE: Health: Juicing
@G I basically changed my juicing regimen to include more calories. What I mean is I purchased a lot of coconut oil and melt (liquidate?) and pour into my juice before i drink it. The reason why is i'm generally on the leaner side so in order to add calories i just melt in a bunch of coconut oil.

Example: 1 apple, 5 carrots, 1/2 cabbage + 5 teaspoons of liquidated coconut oil + protein powder (post workout)

When I started juicing originally i lost 1-2 lbs out of the gate, and realized the juicing was making me less hungry so i adjusted by adding calories to it.

In terms of health impact, i've finally gotten around to another no alcohol pure rotation + day game challenge for the next 10 weeks. I've started breaking out fairly badly. Could be a hormone thing as MikeCF stated to me privately, however I've never had breakouts last summer so not sure what it could be.

For the next 10 weeks I am going to juice every single day. No alcohol. Will see what happens.

I already look like a 12 year old so I doubt i'll get skin comments but I really want to see if it will help me in the weight room a bit more since i need another 3-4 lbs by year end to reach my goal for the year.

So for those guys juicing that are ecotomorphs just add some coconut oil, doesn't look to be harmful. Got some major goals for 2013 and 2014 so if juicing can give me more energy + improve my health i'll drink straight beet/brussel sprout juice.

Whatever it takes.
