That doesn't sound like herpes simplex (which causes sores your genitalia and mucosa in general).

That sounds like herpes zoster aka shingles aka reactivated chicken pox. Only infectious when it's actively making a rash, and if you had chicken pox before then you'd probably be immune anyway.
