Was the cameraman on horse tranquilizer? I'd have at least expected an "oh shit!"

What the hell happened here? Looks like the plane was on it's way to recovery at the last moment. Just not enough altitude to pull it off.

I've read some aviation guys saying a load shift caused the nose to pitch up and at that point the plane stalled.

Other reports saying weather might have been a factor.

I've always thought I could survive a plane crash; this video has made me question that.

Some crashes are survivable if the plane is barely off the ground without much speed, like seconds after take off or on landing. A plane falling from anymore than a few hundred feet up will have no survivors. In a crash it's g force or fire that will do you in. Nothing can survive going from a few hundred miles per hour to zero instantaneously. So if there are survivors, it's because of low speed, low altitude and little fire. If a plane is gonna crash your best bet for survival is just before landing when you're low, slow and most the fuel was burned off.

All in all, a plane crash is a pretty quick death. The anticipation would be the worst part. Once you hit the ground it's over before you knew what happened. There are far worse ways to die.

Actually, there are other versions of this out there where you can distinctly here a guy say "Oh, fuck!"

I bet the dashcam is on a US military vehicle. After the impact, other cars are stopped, and he hits the pedal speeds up as if to go and help and then parks by a fence closer to the impact, end of video.

Oh, 7 crew dead.

This was a civilian contractor plane. And as mentioned in another post, the current theory is that the cargo load shifted, pitching the nose up, causing a stall, and then the crash.

With someone close to me heading there in the next few months for a hitch, this made me pause. What a shitty deal. I figured this was a heavily edited video.....no one could remain silent during this situation.

As I look at this closely again, it seems like the pilot was able to level the wings at 19 seconds in. He just didn't have enough altitude to pull out of stall. That load shift happened at just the wrong instant. If it happened even one minute later they might have had just enough altitude to recover. Really too bad.

Why would that give you pause? Is your friend flying in or out on a cargo plane?

All things considered, Bagram is very safe these days.

That incident was an outlier, obviously.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

I heard about that crash today.... Once the center of gravity goes aft(behind)...past the limit, even with altitude u cant recover from a full stall.(in theory)... The 747 has locking mechanisms\guards that hold cargo in place. It freaks me out how easily that could be missed... and If a compartment isn't full... disaster awaits.

Doesn't a plane primarily stall when the nose is too high up?

As a layman it looks like they lost all thrust.

Horrible way to die to be honest. Think about leaving this world with "stall, stall, stall" ringing all around you... Always wondered, how does it feel the mini-second your body is crushed to pieces. Hope I never find out and leave with some style like David Carradine.

Yeah, thats called...exceeding the critical angle of attack(Pitching ur nose up to high). It causes a plane to stall(aka ..not flY). With the load(Center of gravity) being to far back, u don't have enough command or control to bring the nose down to recover from the stall. The alleged shift of cargo backwards, caused said situation to take place. Just think of it as... u balancing a pencil on ur finger. When it is balanced... ur finger supports it, when it falls off due to imbalance... ur finger has no chance to support it.
Ur finger is synonymous to the airplane wings, from a support stand point.
Planes are a balancing act.
I hope that makes some sense....

That's what a stall means. An airplane stays in the air by pushing air down with its wings and how effective they are at that depends on the angle of the wings. At a too high angle the wings begin to lose their effectiveness at that job and the plane begins to fall from the sky even if the engines are working just fine, that is what's called a "stall" in aviation.

Normal commercial flights will always keep a large safety margin on this ie the pilots keep the plane far from the stall angle during take off but since this is a military chartered plane in Afghanistan they were most likely afraid of ground-to-air missiles. In those circumstances pilots will often discard that safety margin in favour of climbing as fast as possible to quickly gain the altitude that gives safety against missiles. If they were trying to climb unusually fast then they were unusually vulnerable to any unexpected event that could have tilted the plane towards the stall angle.

Quote:As a layman it looks like they lost all thrust.

No, the video shows a very obvious stall. You can't tell whether they had engine problems from the video but they clearly had some thrust right up to the end there. You can see them almost recovering (the pilots manage to turn the wings almost level before hitting the ground) but they just weren't high enough to have the time for recovery manouvers. As scary as the plane "stopping" and "hovering" mid-flight looks like, it's something that any perfectly functional plane will do if you stall it and all pilots are trained to recover from that - the only thing you need is enough altitude and that's what they didn't have.

Loss of all thrust right after take off is actually much less dangerous than stalling and in loss of thrust incidents people generally have a good chance of surviving as the plane can glide and the pilots can do a controlled crash landing. Stalling at a low altitude meant this plane just smashed to the ground and even if someone managed to survive the impact, the smashed fuel tanks mean everything is covered in a cloud of jet fuel in an instant.
