Dude, I read the "Action Against Banning Dash" thread for the first time last night. Wow, I spent a couple hours just going through the threads you guys posted, laughing my ass off. Shame that Mars One is a scam, 2023 is way too early for a company that hasn't done any real work except sell merchandise, put out some fancy design work from a man in Canada and one that has a team largely filled with Graphic designers and Communications majors dedicated to Marketing and PR work. A team that has no pilots, no engineers, no astronauts, no rocket scientists. If they think they can pull this off by 2023 with only 6 billion $$$ in funding needed that is crazy.


Now if it was Elon Musk and his SpaceX talking about putting people on Mars by 2040, then I'll be more optimistic.
Although does someone need to be born on Mars to count as a Mars flag? Would she be able to live a majority of her adult life on Mars to count as a Mars flag?

Did you read the article and wiki page? Didn't you see they have other companies building this stuff for them. Yeah Mars One doesn't know how to build a rocket, but they have other companies they are hiring that do that do know how to make the stuff they need.

They have tons of competent advisers. I can guarantee there will be plenty of experts willing to work with these guys. Most astronauts or aerospace engineers would probably be more than happy to take part. These are intelligent people, they aren't just going to send these people up there to die right away. They have too much invested. I'm sure they have this all thought out, and if not, they have 8 years to figure it out.

Bro you do realize that a majority of Mars One's team is comprimised by PR and marketing that's job is to edit the Wiki page and release news articles.

They plan on using other supplied yet even the main habitation module isn't even close to completion by SpaceX, and if you look through their PR news released they all contain "We envisage to use XXX as supplier for YYY", this is nothing but a sham.

There isn't one piece of information that shows that SpaceX and Elon Musk has worked with the company, and they don't have 8 years to figure out they expect the first "pieces" of the "colony" to arrive on Mars by 2016, the voyage to Mars alone will take 500 days.

6 Billion isn't even close to enough, as Elon Musk has said it will require both the public and private sector to start to develop a mission and colonization of Mars, along with a lot more than 6 billion $$. Not even China is capable yet of launching a mission to Mars, and they've been stealing NASA data for the past decade, what makes you think a team of Marketers and PR communication people will be able to do so.

If they (Mars ONE) does send people to Mars by 2023 I will buy you a house, or even better I'll buy your ticket to Mars!

Those of you who think this can be pulled off in ten years with $6 billion need to seriously make some comparisons and think for yourself. Just look at the closest comparison, the Curiosity rover. Read up on how much planning went into that NASA mission, and that's just landing an unmanned rover about the size of a small SUV. By the way, the Curiosity mission cost was $2.5 billion.

Although I hope you're wrong, you do make valid points.

For many of us, myself included, to say that the prospect of colonizing Mars is fascinating would be an understatement, and initial excitement can lead to naïve optimism. It is by all means possible that this is little more than an elaborate publicity stunt. Even if it isn't, there's still no guarantee that it'll work.

Either way, it is reasonable to think that a Mars landing will take place sometime within our lifetimes. Whether we'll actually live to see a permanent colony or the establishment of some distinct Martian culture is another story.

I'm probably one of the people who would be extremely excited by the idea of human exploration of space. I even felt the same way as one of the posters in this thread who said he wouldn't mind signing up for this if he can bring a near perfect chick along with him for the voyage.

But I also know a bit more about the technical difficulties involved. I also hope that I can be proven wrong about how soon we can do this.

It will be cheaper and faster to do this privately since you have less bureaucracy involved. That's why the cost will be cheaper. If they film the 8 years of training in reality show style with a large group of contestants that's at least 8 seasons of the show and 8 dvds. If they are anywhere as watched as American Idol (big if) they can generate some serious cash and probably enough to fund the mission.

I'd hope they eventually try to change the atmosphere of the planet and send up some livestock at some point.

No it wouldn't. Space hasn't captured the public attention for a long time. People know more about Idol than they know who there local representives in government are. Unless the training has some sort of Bachelor subplot I doubt they will tune in in anywhere near the numbers the popular reality shows get.

Also with idol the best doesn't win the vote. Its always the most popular which is usually generic and bland. I don't I'd want the public voting on something like this. You might end up with Kim Kardisan and Snooki in space.
