i'm on the search for places (bachelor or 1 bdrm) downtown to start renting in the summer. i’m open your suggestions and wisdom in terms of neighbourhoods/intersections. by "downtown" i broadly mean, south of eglinton and east of landsdowne.

of fundamental importance: a) decent set of bars and eateries within walking distance for date purposes, b) solid TTC access/proximity, c) not too goddamn expensive.

of non-fundamental importance: d) presentable and not too sketchy/worn down at night, for those dates, e) close to work (i work at around st clair & christie), f) close to gaming venues (night: king west, ossington & queen / day: unis/shops?), g) parking.

from late 2011 to late 2012 i lived at st clair and yonge. it satisfied a, b, d, e, & g. it wasn’t close to night venues so yes i had to ride the vomit comet on many a weekend night. also it was expensive as fuck. i want to save money this year, so i might look into street parking instead of shelling more to house the pimpmobile (2005 dodge neon baby) in a place with a garage.

right now i’m looking into yonge & eg, yonge & davisville, yonge & st clair (the cheaper buildings there), yonge & wellesley (the homo area?), dupont & spadina, annex.

what do you think?

I would think you would have to be close to King st, most of the action seems to be on that strip and being walking distance should be beneficial. The downside would of course be the rent, which for me is not worth paying.

How is the exit plan coming?

You can get a really cheap summer place at the U of T residences near Spadina and Bloor. Not a bad option if you're on a budget.

i will tough it out in TO through to 2014, with light travel here and there (nyc, montreal, scandinavia). there are certain goals women-wise i want to first achieve at home before setting out somewhere permanently, which as you know is doubly hard for me as my job binds me to a jurisdiction.

I need that magic number first I.e your budget range for rent. The prices swing wildly downtown and in many neighborhoods dumpy places will be skyhigh.

Trinity bell woods is decent : next door to park, on street car line, halfway between ossington strip and king west clubs.

Not a big fan of midtown or uptown...

For a single unit in Downtown West that may be tough. You could find something in Parkdale, a condo on the Lakeshore (if you look at the right units), or in around Bloor Lansdowne-Dundas West. DuPont has deals and is right near Bloor, a lot of people are moving north upwards towards Davenport to find cheaper rents. DuPont is a option from Bathurst as west to about Lansdowne.

The Annex is step, overpriced IMO. A lot of UofT females live in the area but they jack up the rents in the process.

Under 1K a month in Toronto isn't going to get you anything decent. But If I did choose that, I'd think I'd go Parkdale, which is walking distance from the Queen West Bar/Club district.

This might be the spot. You just have to go through a lot of places as many are in rough shape but if your cool with a basement/level-only unit ten one of the many restored house will get you a nice apartment.

Dufferin Street would give you quick access to work. It's well connected with transit too. You can find deals towards and near the Rony strip as well.
