All you need is permission to work in Canada, I work with plenty of guys on one or two year visa's who have started apprenticeships.

I can guarantee you every single ticketed persn working in regulated trades is a PR or to work as an apprentice you need both a work visa AND a study visa.

I am an Irish Journeyman Carpenter here on an IEC Visa working out of the Edmonton Hall, where I was granted Journeyman Status. (Not a Permanent Resident)

My buddy is an apprentice welder, also working out of the hall also on an IEC Visa.

I am a Irishman working out of Hall 1325 in Edmonton, where I have been granted Journeyman Status, I am here on a one Year IEC work Visa.....Not a Permanent Resident.

My Friend is an apprentice welder working out of local 720 also on a 1 year IEC visa.
This is real living proof.....not hypothetical hearsay.

The only conclusion I can come to regarding your case Salmonfella is that the Electrical trade varies a lot from country to country and tends to be more tightly regulated than the other trades, Irish qualifications don't even transfer directly to the UK.

Well I'm all booked up finally.. Been talking about it for too long now, before I even found RooshV forum. Land in Calgary on the 28th... Next chapter of my life and I gotta say this thread definitely influenced me to get off my ass. Hasn't really hit me yet.. Leaving the Greater Toronto Area for more then a few weeks for the first time.

However it is nearing the start of the shutdown season. Scotian knows more about this than I. However Ceda and Clean Harbours are good places to start.

Edmonton has more year round work in construction and trades. Red Deer is a good place to get a job with a well service company.

Thanks for the info brother. I've got some work lined up with a friend of mine who's a contractor. Might end up sticking with it depending on how things pan out.. Benefits and all that is always nice but money talks.

I hear the Unions in BC are terrible, I know one guy who payed his dues for 15 years in BC without ever as much as a phone call from the hall.
You need to come to either Calgary or Edmonton to join the halls there.
Plenty of work right now, Ironically enough they even have postings for jobs up at fort Nelson.

Yea, it's great. I'm in an executive room too, as requested by Suncor for all our crew.
Good location, good food and decent facilities.
Also a nice ratio of women to men......it must be about 20% women.

No doing some exploration work.

It's coming to an end this year but next year will be expanding. Which means there will be rig work up here. Husky is a big player up here.

There is also the bonus of isolation pay. An extra 25% on my pay.

On a side note. The canadian budget was announced and had a $15,000 a year bonus for trade workers in certain trades. Hard to say how it will work since it supposed to be split between the employer and the government. Which means the company has to be willing to pay their half.

Really liking Canada and the Canadians so far.

Still getting used to the snow though. It's been colder than an eskimos ballsac here in Etown for the last few days. I've worked a cold winter in Holland before but this is another level of cold completely, and I'm only catching the tail end of it. Big respect to you guys up north who work through that.

You did end up arriving at the coldest time since I got here. My car was hood-high of snow when I got back from my shift yesterday, luckily my crew was there to help push out my lil '97 Civic. Pulled a 5 day, 14 hr/day rotation as a spare hand for one rig, non-camp, stayed in a hotel (paid by the company with $50 LOA/day), then when I was done, the office called me again to work as a spare hand on a rig in Lamont. Again, pulling 14 hr/day and may be here for another week. Been with this crew for 5 days now.

Working on the rigs is the most physically demanding job I've ever done. Being a greenhand doesn't make things easier, either. They have zero tolerance for pussies.

For myself I'm looking to try work on the rigs this coming winter 2013/14. Driving out from Toronto in fall. Just saving up enough to make the transition and get Enform tickets when I arrive in Edmonton. Enform has a course called Oil &Gas Production Operator Basics - has anyone heard about this and whether it's worth it for those looking to get hired on the rigs?

Watched "Licence to Drill" Pretty tough looking environment these guys work in. That's a decent show by Discovery I'd recomend anyone watch that for a glance at what's comin. Found a short book about life on the rigs by Paul Carter "Dont Tell Mom I Work On The Rigs" It's fucked up and worth a read.

Guys I've been in Edmonton for 3 days so far. People are really nice here! they are so friendly and helpful. I applied to 2 companies today, but it took forever without a car and a lot of industrial areas are impossible to reach without one! You should definitely get a friend who has a car to drive you around to apply or someone because there is no public transit to ALOT of industrial areas and also the surrounding counties. This makes walk in applications and potential walk in interviews impossible. Wasting my day trying to get to sherwood park with public transit to drop off an application was frustrating so I faxed it instead. On a better note I walked through an industrial area and theres signs EVERYWHERE that were hiring. As I was taking the bus around town I saw a lot of places with big hiring signs.

Glad to hear that you made the big move and good luck with the job search, but I thought that you were taking a car with you out west?

Guys, I've said it many times before and I'll say it again, looking for work in Alberta without a car sucks, big time! Especially if you're unskilled and looking for an entry level job, they are going to hire the guy with a car over you probably 90% of the time.

If you do get a job and they ask if you have a car to get to site, just say yes then go out and steal one and abandon it when you get to the job site. Most parking lots of oil sands sites that I've worked at are littered with abandoned stolen cars, all the tires are flat because they've just been sitting there, for years, get er done!

You're a USA Citizen. Get into a Trade there. Pipefitting training is big there too. Trades are huge everywhere there's construction happening. Look at it this way. 4 years from now, you'll be 4 years older, so start! Part of earning your Journeymen certification is about the hours you put in. Those hours accumulated over 4 years! The classroom stuff is simple, what counts is the work experience to be seen objectively as a "Journeyman."

Can't say for sure but I doubt its as open minded as Tdot. A good friend of mine was doing is CA internship at a big accounting firm in Calgary and he's often go out with clients, have dinner, get drunk, etc. He said that one of his colleagues, a very well educated Chinese guy, wasn't taken out by clients nearly as often as he was. I don't think its really a racism thing as much as it is cultural differences, maybe the Chinese guy was just a moron, but the jist of what my buddy said was that its a bit of an old boys club.

Hi there finally got my Permanent Resident visa!!!!!!Arrive in toronto 13 april start working in a companie on the 15th!!!Take my drivers license,a few courses, earn good money and next year try to go to fort mac or edmonton!!!I am gonna work with a front loader and excavator too!!!If im not going to fort mac i will try fort nelson in the mines!!!!The prioritie is fort mac,alberta or calgary but if i can find something in the heavy operators i will try in BC then(got a cousin in Vancouver)!!!!!!!So this is my last 2 weeks in Portugal start organizing things couse my mind is already in Canada!!!I feel that i will at least try to work in the oil sands!!!I work with excavators 3/4 years ago(with 6 years experience) and since i found this thread my dream of working with some of the biggest machines in the word is now bigger then ever!!!!and if the dream come thru i hope to find and met some of the most influent persons in this forum!!!!(Sorry about my english,i can sepeak and understand better then writting)!!!!!!!

Guys did any of ye ever hear of tarpon energy? there based out of Edmonton i have a Skype interview with them in the coming days for an electrician gig..there operating in the oil sands.

So got spring break up the other day. Went around today with some resumes and got a cafe job in like 2 hours.

Not crazy good money bt good for gaming and will tie me over till summer.

Its pretty easy to get work here just got to hit that pavement...
