The best travel guide you can have is doing your own research and then populating a Google map with your own places of interest. If you have an android phone you can save it for offline use.

i find wikitravel a lot more useful in many ways than lonely planet or rough guide

I would never use a guidebook for deciding what sights to see. I mainly look for information on transport and maybe local customs or peculiarities / warnings. Btw, I can recommend this site for train info all around the world:

Lp books target the " I am so unique, more local than the locals on my 7 day trip to 12 cities" crowd. The language alone is appalling at times, making it seem like a 14 year old hipster girl wrote the guides.
For SE Asia the typical lp reader would end up being " totally rocking on Khao San Road", eating " unique banana pancakes", taking a trip to Laos to buy authentic mass-produced hippie travelling pants and discovering "Pai, totally down with the villagers".

I have always hated Lonely Planet guides and Let's Go guides before that.

Years ago I came up with the idea to do good travel guides on places, kind of like Roosh's guides but more focused on places and logistics, not so much of theories of seduction of local girls.

That is why I was glad when Roosh did the Bang guides. But now he stopped.

I still think the area is a good opportunity for someone. Not sure how it pencils out though.
