as a sidenote, the development of the North American energy sector is going to continually allow America and Canada (but esp. the US because of population) to increasingly become energy independent, maybe even a net oil exporter. I know 3 carpenters who were working in Anzac...This is why I wanted to come out there. They were staying at the Surmont 2 which looks like a killer camp. Flights paid from the isle, over $40 p/h base rate + lots of OT, etc.

One of my 3 buddies was on the 'A' shift...whole crew got laid off.
Two of my buddies still have a job 'B' shift.

There was over 40 positions for carpenters available 3 weeks ago in Anzac included camp,flights. Then they just disappeared.
From what I hear there is no loyalty what so ever and your just another face.
All 3 of my carpenter buddies (even the 2 with jobs) are looking and applying elsewhere.

Dog eat dog there, even if you have a trade...Never rely on the recruiters and always have a back up, and never wait no matter how much they try and spin it...put up or shut up!

yea it was crazy the 6350 in Ireland went in 4 days. Irishman did you get your 2nd 2 year visa? i was lucky i got one in time a lot of peeps got caught out.

Definetely not as bad as spain. However there are very limited jobs available for professionals, UK doesnt have so many industries like the US or Canada. There are better jobs available in Canada, reason why many of us are looking to move there.

Hey guys, quick update. Got a job with a well-servicing company. As per my offer letter, it says that once I'm done my probation (3 months) I'll be starting out as a floorhand on the service rigs. I'll be on-call and right now work isn't too consistent due to spring break-up, but once the summer kicks in, the recruiter tells me to expect to work 21 days straight with a minimum 3 days off in between. As scotian mentioned, I'll have to be the company's go-to guy and I have every intention to be. Having a car is a huge bonus here too, because the recruiter mentioned that most of her guys don't have cars so they're pretty much useless to them unless they can get a bus to them. Oh, and the recruiters here are fucking BABES. WOW.

I honestly cannot add anything that hasn't been said in this thread. I used this thread as a template for my game plan and it worked well. Obviously there are hurdles that are unique to each person's situation, and some obstacles that you simply cannot plan for, but if you're not prepared for such difficulty then you should probably re-think your motive to move.

mate did you do a day work yet? how does it differ to that of drilling? is there a big difference between a drill crew and a service crew regarding work/pay?

Haven't done a work day yet as I was officially hired on Friday. The company also has a drilling side as well, so when I was doing my paperwork for my other licenses, they showed two charts (one for well-servicing and one for drilling) which showed the ladder of positions from trainee to rig manager.

Label-wise, the well-servicing side didn't have a leasehand but a 'trainee' as a starter position, whereas the drilling side had leasehand as a starter position. I haven't started the work yet nor have I been on site, so I cannot comment on the work. Pay-wise, it's the same for both crews. As per my offer letter, the position of floorhand is based on current CAODC rates.

Based on what the recruiter tells me, the well-servicing side moves around much more often because this division is focused on maintenance of the existing wells and rigs, which means that once the maintenance and the check-ups are completed, then you close up shop and move to the next well/rig.

Hahaha, Ensign was one of the many...many companies I approached during my 2 days in Nisku. From what I recall, there was an attractive blonde lady that I spoke to. But I didn't end up getting work with them.

Point of doing it in class is to actually TRY ON The equipment and to practice the safety lifts. Actually carrying a human body.

The way I see it is... A ticket is a ticket. $45 online or $240 in class.
Online...One can get H2S, Fall Arrest, and Confined Space Tickets for $175.
I paid $65 and did my CSTS online, Whats the difference?

For the cash conscience, using online courses is a huge savings.
Tickets For...CSTS, H2S, Fall Arrest, Confined spaces = $340 Total (online).
Seems these classes are price gouging.

I know for sure that you can take the PST/CSTS online.

For the others I always assumed you needed classroom time. The reason for this is so you can learn to use equipment/techniques. I would make some phone calls before taking the online versions of those courses.

$240 seems pricey for H2S. H2S Alive is $150 from Enform. They are the biggest safety trainer in Alberta.

I did my PST/CSTS online through Enform, 100 bucks. Did the H2S at Nisku, 150 bucks. Yeah you need to do the other ones in the classroom as there are practical excercies to do such as putting on the equipment, moving a body etc...but also, use it as an opportunity to network. At my H2S Alive course in Nisku, a guy got a job offer during the class room as there were a few guys who were veterans in the industry who had their own companies but because they had to redo-renew their H2S Alive ticket, had to come to this course. So use it wisely, you never know who the people next to you are and they could be your way into a good gig. That's something you wouldn't be able to do online.

I was planning on going to Australia to work in May but I think that I'll go back to Alberta instead, the big shut down money is irresistible, I don't really want to cut my vacation short but most of them are kicking off in April, so I may have to.

I'm making phone calls and sending e-mails now, I'm gonna whore myself out to the highest bidder and hopefully score a flight back from Asia, I'll keep you guys posted.

I looked for norway, first you get for one year, and then you may apply for one more. Is that the same elsewhere?
